The Style Network is rewarding its summer hit series, Tia & Tamera by giving it a second season renewal.  The August 8 launch of Tia & Tamera, starring sisters, Tia Mowry Hardict and Tamera Mowry-Housley, became Style’s most-watched series launch with an average of 750,000+ total viewers and after five weeks the show is remaining stable with 755,000 total viewers as well as 490,000 with A18-49 and 410,000 with W18-49.  Production on season two will begin yet this year.  The series is produced by Good Clean Fun.

A second season is on tap for Oxygen Media’s fashion series Jersey Couture.  The series, sporting half-hour episodes in the next season, features the Scalis family, owners of Diane & Company in New Jersey.  Half Yard Productions is behind the series which makes a comeback on Oxygen in early 2012.

Season three of Storm Riders unleashes on The Weather Channel September 27 at 9p.  Meteorologists Simon Brewer and Juston Drake, using a bare-bones operation, go in search of the next big tornado or hurricane.  Peacock Productions is behind the series.

These seven Media General stations launch September 26.  Furthermore, Raycom Media added its CBS affiliate in Cleveland, WOIO and WQWQ/Paducah to Me-TV’s roster.  These new market clearances take Me-TV’s reach to 60% of the US.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME), the brand unit of FremantleMedia is partnering with television producer Litton Entertainment and secured the global distribution rights (excluding the US) to four new Litton series.  FME will represent these four series at MIPCOM in October: Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown, Ocean Mysteries, Everyday Health and Culture Click.  Each half-hour series has 26 eps.

Antenna TV, a Tribune Broadcasting multicast broadcast network is now cleared in 53% of the US including 14 of the top 20 markets with added new affiliates on Adell Broadcasting’s WADL-TV in Detroit and Cox Broadcasting’s WRDQ-TV in Orlando.  Other recent additions for Antenna TV include three Media General stations: WNCN-TV in Raleigh-Durham; WJTV-TV in Jackson, MS; and WBTW-TV in Myrtle Beach; as well as Sarkes Tarzian’s station KTVN-TV in Reno.

A new animated comedy was approved by FX using the working title Unsupervised.  The network plans on premiering the 13-episode Unsupervised in January and pairing it with animated comedy Archer.  Unsupervised is about upbeat best friends Gary and Joel who must navigate the harsh reality of teen life and trying to do what’s right without any parental guidance.  The team behind FX’s comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Rob Rosell, Scott Marder and David Hornsby all created Unsupervised and serve as executive producers.  Voice talent tapped for the new series includes Justin Long, Kristen Bell, Romany Malco, Fred Armisen, Kaitlin Olson and Alexa Vega in addition to Rosell and Hornsby.  FX Productions is producing in association with RCG Productions and Floyd County.  The series will be animated by Archer Executive Producers Adam Reed and Matt Thompson.

Three new series were approved by National Geographic Channel:

  • Goldfather from Prospector Productions centers on John Reeves, known as the “Goldfather” who owns ten thousand acres of patented land in Alaska that is full of gold.  13 one-hour eps.
  • American Gypsies from Stick Figure Productions is about the Johns family of Manhattan and one of the most prominent Gypsy families who are trying to maintain their traditional age-old customs amid the chaos of the city.  10 one-hour eps.
  • Navajo Cops from Flight 33 features the American Southwest and focuses on the 330 cops of the Navajo Police patrol whose mission is to protect the largest Indian reservation in North America and to preserve an ancient way of life.  6 one-hour eps.

AMC tagged Greg Nicotero, an Emmy Award-winning make-up effects artist as co-executive producer of The Walking Dead.  Additionally, Nicotero signed a first-look deal with the network for his own projects at AMC.  Last Saturday, Nicotero won for Best Prosthetic Make-up for AMC’s The Walking Dead at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Al Roker Entertainment Inc. (ARE) is entering into a production partnership with C. Russell Muth, Executive Producer of CRM Entertainment (CRM).  The two entities are collaborating on several upcoming series projects using Muth’s talents as executive producer and show-runner and ARE’s experience as a television production company.  The two will join forces on three series:

  • The Weather Channel’s Coast Guard Alaska premiering November 9 at 9p with seven one-hour eps
  • A&E’s Bordertown: Laredo premiering with back-to-back eps on October 13 at 10p and 1030p and with 10 eps total
  • Spike TV’s Big Easy Justice coming in 2012

FX’s American Horror Story has added another actor as Morris Chesnut (V) landed the part of Luke for a multi-episode run.  Twentieth Century Fox produces the series from executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and the series launches October 5.

Richard Schiff (West Wing) landed a role on Showtime’s upcoming half-hour series House of Lies playing the boss of the management consulting company that employs the characters played by Kristen Bell and Don Cheadle, per THR.  House of Lies is slated to premiere January 8 along with season roll outs of Shameless and Californication.

A number of development and script deals made by the broadcast networks:

  • Comedian Martin Lawrence finalized a talent agreement with CBS and CBS Television Studios where a show will be developed specifically for him, reports Variety.
  • FOX picked up a script titled Metropolitan about three sets of detectives working in Washington, D.C., per Variety.  The project is from Doug Liman’s Hypnotic company and is being produced by Universal Cable Productions.  Jason Tracey is writing the script and executive producing with Liman and David Bartis.
  • Author A.M. Homes sold an untitled script to CBS, per Variety.  The script will be produced by CBS Television Studios and is a medical drama about a female military veteran.  Homes penned the pilot and will be the executive producer along with Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman.
  • John Wells Productions sold a one-hour drama project to NBC centered on inmates in a women’s prison titled Bad Girls, cites THR.   The plot is based on a UK series by the same name which was created by Maureen Chadwick and Ann McManus and co-devised by Eileen Gallagher.  For the US version, Nancy Pimental (Shameless) is on board to write and serve as executive producer.  Warner Bros. Television, John Wells Productions and Shed Media are all producing.
  • A small screen adaptation of the sci-fi film Source Code was picked up by CBS from Mark Gordon Company that has an overall deal with ABC Studios, per THR.  CBS okayed the project with a hefty penalty for the action/procedural about three former federal agents who are involved in a top secret program.  Gordon will produce the drama with Vendome Pictures’ Philippe Rousselet as consulting producer; Steve Maeda is writing.

New projects at a couple of cable networks:

  • ABC Family is ready to hand a pilot order for Strut from writer Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls), reports Variety. The pilot is about a Las Vegas showgirl who unwittingly marries a Texan and becomes a drill team instructor for a group of misfits at a local high school.   Last year, ABC Family gave the same project a cast-contingent order though was unable to cast it.  Sherman-Palladino was brought on board to refresh the project and she will serve as executive producer along with Anna Mastro, Charlie Stratton and Norman Buckley.  In addition, ABC Family okayed an action drama pilot Intercept about college students who solve crimes.
  • OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network ordered six episodes of Secret Talent Scout, per THR.  The series is about a group of talent scouts who go undercover to find fresh talent across the US.  Zodiak USA created and developed the format. Zodiak’s CCO Natalka Znak and EVP/Current Claire O’Donohoe are the executive producers in addition to Michael Shevloff.
