A new Nielsen study finds a significant link between how engaged viewers are with programming content, and their ability to remember ads within that content the next day. For every 2-percentage-point improvement in a viewer’s program engagement, the study of more than 70,000 ads found, there was a 1-percentage-point improvement in ad memorability. (Caveat: great ads will be remembered no matter where they air.) Bottom line: Investing in powerful programming can pay off.
While CBS CEO Leslie Moonves said at an investor conference this week that the month-long blackout on Time Warner Cable did “no harm” to the net, at the same confab TWC COO Rob Marcus acknowledged the retrains dispute “definitely had a subscriber impact.” But, he said, “We felt like in order to achieve our long-term objectives, that was the only path.”
Fox News Channel anchor Shepard Smith will also serve as managing editor of a new breaking news division, the net announced Thursday. Smith departs 7p’s The Fox Report, but will appear throughout the day and primetime with news updates. Fox News, said chairman Roger Ailes, is “no longer bound by a traditional evening format conceived in the 1960s.”
More Emmy presenters have been announced: Will Arnett and Margo Martindale from CBS‘s upcoming fall sitcom The Millers will be on hand, along with Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston, Homeland‘s Claire Danes, 30 Rock‘s Alec Baldwin, Andre Braugher from Fox‘s upcoming Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Jimmy Kimmel and Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara. As part of its sponsorship of the Emmy Awards, Audi taped tongue-in-cheek spots starring nominee Claire Danes (Homeland). The ads, featuring Danes behind the wheel of Audi’s diesel-powered A6 TDI, start airing Sunday, September 15 on TV and online. It’s win-win: The ad gives exposure to the diesel option, which has been overshadowed by electric and hybrid, and bumps awareness for Homeland ahead of its Sunday, September 29 third season premiere at 9p.
The 26th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards will be presented in a one-hour special on MundoFox. Honorees include Eva Longoria, musical group Los Tigres Del Norto and chef Jose Andres, on Sunday, September 15 at 7p.

CBS Corp. and Amazon have renewed their streaming deal for season two of summer series Under the Dome, allowing Amazon Prime members exclusive access to each episode four days after broadcast. Eps will also be available on Amazon’s Instant Video devices. CBS CEO Leslie Moonves said Wednesday that between the original Amazon licensing pact and international deals for the Amblin Entertainment hit, “We were in profit regardless of what the network rating was.”
New Orleans has cooked up a plot to make Bravo‘s Top Chef happy it returned to Louisiana. The Magical Elves production had its 2008 finale in the Big Easy, and as it prepares to launch season 11 there, the city’s tourism board is pushing locals to boost viewership. “I ask every citizen of our fine city to show your pride and love of New Orleans by gathering with family and friends and tuning in,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. We could be seeing a lot more of Homer. 20th Century Fox chairman-CEO Gary Newman told investors Thursday that the company is preparing to sell rerun rights to nearly 600 eps of The Simpsons, which has yet to run on cable, “A cable channel could play the series for 52 weeks without having to repeat,” pointed out Newman, calling the series “one of the strongest brands that TV has ever known.”
