~ MORE GOOD STUFF  ~

NBC has pulled the plug on its cop drama series Southland.  At this point, the show had not yet premiered this season, and no reason has yet been cited for the cancellation. The show was expected to make its season debut on Friday, October 23rd at 9p, and in fact have six episodes currently in the can.  While nothing has definitely been placed in the time period, the network has been airing Dateline at that time, and the ratings have been reasonable.  Southland was produced by Warner Bros. Television and John Wells Prods.

ABC has given back 9 orders to three of its new freshman comedies Modern Family, Cougar Town and The Middle.  The Middle has averaged a 2.4/7 in the demo at 830p on Wednesday nights, Modern Family has averaged a 3.8/10 A18-49 on Wednesday nights at 9p; and Cougar Town at 930 has pulled a 3.8/10 season to date for ABC.  ABC has not made any decisions – or at least not made them known as yet – about the Kelsey Grammer-headliner comedy Hank, the fourth sitcom on Wednesday night at 8p, or the dramedy Eastwick at 10p.

Discovery Channel brings back another new season of Storm Chasers on October 18 at 10p. A new season of Storm Chasers follows a team, headed by Reed Timmer, as they travel in their armored vehicle, dubbed “The Dominator” looking for major storms in Tornado Alley. They meet up with IMAX filmmaker Sean Casey and his tank-like vehicle TIV (Tornado Intercept Vehicle) and his group of trackers. Original Media produces the series for Discovery Channel.

Following the recent fourth season premiere of Dexter, Showtime announced its debut of an exclusive animated webisode series titled Dexter: Early Cuts starting October 25 on www.sho.com . The 12-part series will be presented in four, 1-2 minute chapters over 12 weeks detailing how Dexter’s killing techniques evolved and reveal interesting facts about his life. Lauren Gussis, who writes and produces the on-air series, wrote the animated webisodes and each one will be created by a different illustrator and each will be narrated by Dexter himself (Michael C. Hall).

The season finale of Style Network‘s Giuliana & Bill on Wednesday night at 9p drew nearly 500,000 total viewers and a .38 rating among key W18-49.  Among the slightly young female demo, W18-34, it scored marginally higher with a .42 rating. Immediately following was the season premiere of Clean House which delivered 450,000 total viewers.

Scripps Networks Interactive announced plans to rebrand Fine Living Network into the Cooking Channel launching it during third quarter 2010. The new Cooking Channel will be used as a companion network to Scripps’ Food Network similar to how DIY Network complements HGTV. Programming on the 24-hour Cooking Channel will feature new talent and current personalities from Food Network emphasizing food information and instructional cooking with multi-platform viewing opportunities such as VOD, interactive online and broadband components as well as being presented in both standard-def and hi-def. Within the food genre, the network will focus on programs centered on baking, ethnic foods, wine and spirits, healthy and vegetarian cooking and kids’ foods. Furthermore, Cooking Channel will be based out of Scripps Networks studios in New York City’s Chelsea Market. To date, Fine Living Network reaches 55 million subscribers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

ESPN Classic acquired more than 150 hours of new programming from ITV Studios Global Entertainment including content from the ITV Classic Sports archives. The programming contained in the package showcases major sporting events from the mid-1960s to the present day from the Football League and FA Cup Football to historic boxing matches and classic wrestling. ESPN Classic will premiere the programming this winter on the UK, pan-European and Africa/Middle East Classic channels targeting more than 20 million homes.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS handed a pilot commitment for a Hawaii Five-O revival written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and executive producer Peter Lenkov (CSI: NY); all three are also executive producing. To date, there is scant information on how the three will update the classic cop series which followed the fictional Hawaiian state police department headed by Steve McGarrett played by Jack Lord. The original series ran on CBS from 1968-1980.

Prolific producer Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives) has a full slate of projects including a new stint as co-executive producer of SyFy’s Caprica series. In addition, Murphy is working on a drama for The CW based on the book Cheer: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders by Kate Torgovnick; Warner Bros. Television and Tom Welling Productions will produce. Murphy executive produces the cheerleader project with Tom Welling and AJ Marcantonio. Furthermore, Murphy is involved in a Broadway musical adaptation of the 1989 cult film Heathers set for 2011 where he is writing the lyrics and book. A fourth project on Murphy’s roster includes supervising the one-hour drama Velvet Hammer written by Gail Gilchriest and produced by CBS Television Studios for USA Network.

Film actress Ellen Page is working with HBO to write and produce a single-camera comedy called Stitch N’ Bitch. Page is collaborating on the writing portion with two other actors, Alia Shawkat and Sean Tillmann. All three will executive produce the project about two cool girls who move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in hopes of becoming artists … of any kind. The trio may star in the comedy, tho nothing definite has been said at this point. Currently in theaters, Page, Shawkat and Tillman are acting together in the movie Whip It, directed by Drew Barrymore.

Even though fans of ABC’s All My Children, thought her character died in a motorcycle accident, actress Rebecca Budig returns to the daytime soap reprising her character Greenlee. Budig will begin shooting scenes in New York just before All My Children’s production moves to Los Angeles. Ya gotta love the daytime soaps!

Australian actor Jason Clarke signed a talent holding agreement with CBS to star in a drama pilot set for next season, per THR. This deal comes after Clarke starred in an untitled legal drama pilot for CBS during the last development lineup.

Casting Call: Donald Trump Productions and Juma Entertainment are partnering on a new relationship show and are seeking bachelors to win the heart and hand of a famous bachelorette. The show is called The Merger and Donald Trump will be the matchmaker between a bevy of bachelors and the female TV personality who is also a personal friend of Trump’s. The eligible bachelors will stay at Trump International Hotel and Tower in Las Vegas and from there hope to win over the bachelorette. The show is seeking single guys who are at least 21 years old; all races and ethnicities; able to work in the US and is a legal US resident; outgoing with big personalities; and financially successful. Interested bachelors should email a brief description, recent photos along with contact numbers to
.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Twitter‘s recent $1 billion evaluation suddenly seems a little more reasonable. The microblogging service is currently in talks with Google and Microsoft to license its 140-character data feeds to both companies’ search engines, reports the WSJ’s AllThingsD. Integrating Twitter feeds into Bing and Google search would provide more immediacy to web searches, tapping into user activity and corporate tweets around breaking news, trends and current events. It’s not clear how Twitter would be compensated for helping to drive traffic to third party sites, but even a fraction of a percentage point of the $10 billion generated each year in search advertising would be quite a head start for a company that has yet to generate any real revenue.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: AOL is set to officially launch JSYK.com (Just So You Know, www.jsyk.com ), its new tween/teen 9-15 targeted culture centric blog tomorrow.  Part of AOL’s MediaGlow range of websites, JSYK.com will feature celebrity, entertainment and style news, tech info, photos, videos, polls, quizzes as well as an area about politics and current events.  The blog is launching in conjunction with AOL’s sponsorship of The First National Tween Girl Summit 2009 in Washington, D.C.  AOL continues to provide its other kid-aimed offerings KOL and KOL Jr. and a range of sites for parents.   Full edition: CYN KIDS.

Friday Fun Fact: The average person will spend approximately 2 weeks of their lifetime waiting for the light to turn green.

This day in History:  2009:  NASA sends a missile into a crater on the Moon where it explodes; four minutes later a satellite is sent into the crater gathering data from the resulting massive cloud of moon dust and quickly sending data back to Earth before the satellite also crashes into the Moon.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  Who am I?  I was born in England to a family of people who do what I do now. I went to Oxford and spent some time as a museum curator.  When I chose not to go into the family business, and headed in the opposite direction, I had a series of friends who nicknamed me Ripper.  After conjuring some pretty ugly folks, I came back to the family biz, and was eventually assigned to work in a school in the States.  Who am I?  RUPERT GILES on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER  Kudos to: Adam Bain-Scollon Prods/Columbia; Christy Stewart-Malone Advertising/Indianapolis; Todd Galloway-WOIO, WUAB/Cleveland; Mallory Dumas-Food Network/NY; Karen Frost-Columbia College/Chicago; Erin Roston-NCC/Dallas; Jesus Molina-KXOF/Laredo; Julie Syers-Briggs & Caldwell/Houston; Kathleen Campbell-ScreamFest LA/LA; Sara Balog/LA; Conal O’Herlihy-Traveling Light Media/Burbank; Damon Parry-Horizon Media/LA; Sheldon Wiebe-EclipseMagazine.com/Calgary; Michal Itzhaki-Hop! channel/Tel Aviv Israel; Lucy Vernall-Ideas Lab/Birmingham UK; Paola D’Agnolo-Galafilm/Montreal
