CYN‘s MIPCOM 2011Heart and SoulAnother MIPCOM come and gone; and by the time you receive this, I’ll be in the air headed home. Late yesterday afternoon, as I enjoyed a final espresso at a sidewalk cafe this last day of the market, I was reminded of some of the things you see here, that for me are the heart and soul of Cannes:

  • The women in their 4″ high stilettos who walk like they were born in them
  • The French men who know it doesn’t matter what they do, as long as they say it with an accent and a smile
  • The children all dressed like high end autumnal country catalog babies
  • The motorcyclists who will run you down in a New York minute, no matter if you’re on the street or the sidewalk
  • The couple at the beach cafe who after just 2 min of earnest discussion, she stood, said something in French, and tossed her drink in his face before storming away
  • The waiters who can simultaneously clean your table, take your order, and avoid eye contact with absolutely everyone
  • The older couples who I imagine have been married now for decades and decades, and still hold hands walking down the street
  • The little boy skipping down a busy side street unaware the 12′ bamboo fishing pole with line and bobber are beheading people right and left
  • The well-dressed man who took advantage of an open fire hydrant to wash his feet
  • And last but never least, the aged French woman who went to such pains to look just right when she headed out this morning, forgetting to give the same attention to her rear view.

Au revoir Cannes, see you in the Spring!
P.S.  The Louis Vuitton store showcasing the Peter Pan collar for women, covered their shop windows last Tuesday, the same morning I made mention of it here.  Probably a subscriber.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FOX approved a one-hour single-camera comedy project co-created by Academy Award-winning Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, marking the brothers’ first venture into television production.  FOX gave the project titled Harve Karbo a script with penalty order, and it’s about a prickly Los Angeles private investigator and his deadbeat friends who often work among the Who’s Who of Hollywood.  The Coen brothers will executive produce along with Phil Johnson, Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo for Imagine TV and 20th Television.  Johnson will also write the script.

Continuing their co-production partnership, Discovery Channel and BBC are teaming on the eight-part landmark series History of the World set to premiere in 2013.  The series will cover world history from 70,000 BC to 2011 AD relating the most critical events in human civilization.  The series uses the latest in CGI technology, dramatic reconstructions and location footage taken in five continents.  Some of the monumental events covered include ice age survival, the birth of democracy, the Viking raids, Renaissance Man, the birth of the world’s great religions and much more.  Executive producers on the series include BBC’s Chris Granlund along with Kathryn Taylor as series producer; for Discovery Channel, Susan Winslow serves as executive producer.

Production has commenced this week in Montreal on the new scripted series, Bullet in the Face for IFC.  The six-episode half-hour comedy/action thriller stars Max Williams as Gunter Vogler, Neil Napier as Lt. Karl Hagerman, Jessica Steen as Commissioner Eva Braden and Kate Kelton as Martine Mahler along with guest stars Eddie Izzard and Eric Roberts playing notorious crime lords.  After a jewel heist goes awry, sociopath criminal Gunter Vogler awakens in a hospital surrounded by cops and with a new face.  The police then force him to work undercover to take down the city’s crime lords.  IFC will premiere Bullet in the Face in summer 2012.  Montreal-based Muse Entertainment Enterprises and Just For Laughs Television are producing the series.
