Good morning. It’s Friday, October 6, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
The first fall freshman series to get a full season pickup – Heroes on NBC. The network has ordered the back nine, giving the full complement of 22 episodes. While that’s going on, NBC‘s series Kidnapped has been banished to Saturdays, as of October 21. And yes, production will end after the initial 13 episodes are in the can. Filling the Wednesday 10p time period? Nothing official yet – but guesses go to Dateline NBC, Medium or Crossing Jordan.
Tonight’s Premieres:
MSG: The Jammys Live 11p
Sci Fi: Battlestar Galactica at 9p
Yep, it happened: The CW will switch its Sunday and Monday primetime programming starting October 9. The comedy block of Everybody Hates Chris, All of Us, Girlfriends and The Game will now move to Mondays from 8-10p. On October 9, the network will rebroadcast each sitcom’s season premiere and new original episodes of each will return on October 16. Then, beginning October 15, the new Sunday schedule will begin with a repeat of the previous Wednesday’s America’s Next Top Model at 7p, with new original episodes of 7th Heaven at 8p and Runaway at 9p.
More primetime changes to come at FOX: When the MLB World Series ends in November and in anticipation of the November sweeps, FOX will make a few changes to its schedule. In addition, FOX will debut The Rich List, the new quiz show hosted by Eamonn Holmes, on November 1 at 9p following Bones. A re-cap of FOX’s new schedule follows:
- Mon: Prison Break, Justice (10/23)
- Tue: Standoff (10/31), House (10/31)
- Wed: Bones, The Rich List (11/1)
- Thu: Til Death, Happy Hour, The O.C. (11/2)
- Fri: Vanished (10/27), Trading Spouses (10/27)
- Sat: Cops, Cops, AMW
- Sun: Football Runover, Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy, War at Home

ABC’s romantic comedy Big Day, about the wedding day of one young couple will premiere November 28 at 9p. The show, produced by Sony Pictures Television, stars Marla Sokoloff and Josh Cooke as the soon-to-be-married couple.
Crown Media Holdings has sold the domestic rights to its library to RHI Enterprises for a cool $160 million. The sale includes 600+ films, miniseries and series. You may recall Crown Media purchased RHI Entertainment in 1994, retitled it the Hallmark Entertainment. Then, bringing it around full circle, Robert Halmi Sr.’s bought back the production company and changed the name back to RHI Entertainment. Some of the major film and miniseries titles included in this deal are Moby Dick, Lonesome Dove, Merlin and Gulliver’s Travels.
MSG Network will debut the new original show The Jammys Live, tonight at 11p. The five-part one-hour series will showcase musical performances from the last three years of the alternative award show held at Madison Square Garden. This is the first new show to premiere under MSG’s new sports and entertainment format that is all about Madison Square Garden. The Jammys Live is produced by Relix Records in association with MSG.
USA Network and Major League Gaming (MLG) are teaming up to present Boost Mobile Major League Gaming Pro Circuit, a seven-episode series starting this fall on November 11 at 10a and scheduled to air on Saturday mornings. The series will follow the contestants who participate in MLG’s seven-city professional video game circuit. Sponsors include Boost Mobile, Scion and Gamestop with more announced later. The show will take viewers into the lives of the gamers along with unique graphic illustrations and the drama of the competitions.
Starting tonight at 8p, TNT will premiere an original mini-drama (airing during commercial breaks), Change of Plans, which is essentially a marketing promotion for Chase’s new rewards credit card, Chase Freedom. The mini-drama focuses on a young, female executive and the choices she has to make. The first four parts will air tonight during the film Castaway, with the fifth and final segment shown only at TNT’s online destination, TNT.tv. Later, Chase will feature the full length Change of Plans as part of the company’s marketing campaign on other online sites. Change of Plans will also air in three encore presentations of Castaway on TNT.
Food Network’s latest series featuring chef Giada De Laurentiis has begun production. Giada’s Weekend Getaways will premiere January 12 at 930p and will combine her love of food with finding vacation destinations for food lovers. Each half-hour episode has Giada traveling to locations such as New York City, Cape Cod, San Francisco, Santa Fe and more and relating to the viewers how to maximize dollars and time to get the most out of a three-day weekend.
The Meredith Corp. will acquire the Berkeley-based ReadyMade magazine, a brand that is considered to be a younger version of Martha Stewart’s Living. The magazine is aimed at men and women in their 20s to 30s who enjoy DIY home projects. With the sale, the bi-monthly publication will see its circulation double to 200,000 and advertising will be sold out of Meredith’s New York offices. Terms of the final deal were not disclosed.
MTV’s newest reality comedy series Rob & Big will premiere November 2 at 1030p. The show is an updated version of the odd couple theme with Rob Dyrdek, the professional street skateboarder, and Christopher “Big Black” Boykin, his bodyguard and best friend. A sneak preview of Rob & Big will air October 26 as MTV, MTV.com and MTV Mobile will offer Rob & Big: The Prequel, a five-minute vignette series. And, beginning October 31, viewers can download the full premiere episode for free on iTunes, two days before it airs on MTV, and thereafter thru the season, as well as be seen on MTV.com Rob & Big is created by Jeff Tremaine, one of the creators of Jackass and Wildboyz series and the two Jackass movies.
Twentieth Television has picked up another novela, La Calle de las Novias (Brides’ Avenue), for reversioning from TV Azteca for MyNetworkTV. The storyline follows a young couple who must deal with the rivalry between their families per World Screen. The U.S. company just acquired the rights to TV Azteca’s La Heredera last month.
For USA Network‘s pilot project Burn Notice, Jeffrey Donovan has been cast in the lead role about a blacklisted Special Ops agent who uses his special training to determine why he’s been blacklisted, says Hollywood Reporter. This project comes from Fox TV Studios and Fuse Entertainment.
Also from HR, another project at USA Network, this one a comedy called To Love and Die in LA from Broadway Video TV and NBC Universal TV Studio, has signed Shiri Appleby to star as a woman who moves to LA to find the father she never knew. When she does locate him, she also discovers his 9-5er is as an assassin – maybe this is just the job for her too!
Sci Fi Channel has ordered more episodes of Superhero. The original order of the show which is scheduled to premiere its second season this summer, was for 6 episodes and that has now been upped to 10. Nash Entertainment and Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment will produce the game/reality series looking for the next great superhero. The winner of the game will be made into a comic book superhero.
Showtime has ordered 8 episodes of Meadowlands from UK’s Channel 4 and Ecosse Films. Lest you think this is about a football team, think again. Meadowlands is about a family moving to a lovely and picturesque new neighborhood, only to find in this little cul-de-sac nothing is as it seems. The series stars David Morrissey and Lucy Cohu.
CBS‘ new reality project The Singing Office where a merry band of producers surprise two sets of employees – real people in their real offices – get them to sing, and the best groups are flown to Hollywood where they are coached on their singing and dancing. They then compete against each other and the viewers chose which is the best Singing Office. Signed to host is Alan Thicke.
ABC‘s newest game show, Show Me the Money, has called in William Shatner to host. The network has ordered 7 episodes, and in each contestants try to bank roll a bundle by answering trivia questions.
Tribune Publishing, a division of Tribune Company, has appointed David D. Hiller as President/Publisher/CEO of the Los Angeles Times, effective immediately. David replaces Jeff Johnson who resigned Thursday. David comes to the Times from the Chicago Tribune where he was President/CEO since November 2004.
J. Alan Davis has been hired at Liberation Entertainment in Los Angeles as VP/Head of Worldwide Business Affairs.
The Tennis Channel has added Pierre Vudrag as VP/Business and Legal Affairs to be the network’s in-house legal affairs advisor and to oversee a variety of areas including licensing program content to the network’s multiple brand platforms. Based in Los Angeles, Pierre reports to Bill Simon, CFO.
Ray Hutton is the new EVP/CFO of Turner Broadcasting System International, which falls under Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. Based in Atlanta, Ray will report to Vicky Miller, CFO, TBS, Inc. The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1683-A group of Mennonites arrive in present-day Philadelphia, among the first Germans to settle in the American colonies. The group had been offered a land grant by William Penn and freedom to practice their religion. Naming their first settlement Germantown, this group was the entering wedge of a huge German migration to America. Their arrival was formally commemorated in 1987 with Congressional passage of an act naming October 6 as German-American Day.
