After three decades that saw a vast transformation of the NBA, Commissioner David Stern announced that he will retire on Feb. 1, 2014, 30 years after he took over the league. Stern will be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver. Stern made the announcement at an NBA Board of Governors meeting yesterday, noting that he leaves the league in an extremely healthy state.

An early blowout that drove the Giants to an 8-3 victory in Game 1 of the 2012 World Series still delivered FOX Sports with a win for the evening in households as well as key demos. The game posted a 7.6/12 with 12.2 million viewers in household fast-national rating/share, according to Nielsen. However, those numbers are off-pace from Game 1 in 2011, a close game that drew an 8.7/14 and averaged 14.2 million viewers. Detroit led all markets for Game 1 viewing this year with a 33.2/46 followed by San Francisco, which delivered a 32.3/58 rating/share.
NBC Sports Group announced that, for the first time ever, the Breeders’ Cup Classic will be broadcast live in primetime, as part of 9½ hours of Breeders’ Cup World Championships coverage across two days on the NBC Sports Group from Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. The race returns to NBC for the first time since 2005 with programming set to begin on Nov. 2 from 4-8p on NBC Sports Network, and continuing on Nov. 3 with the first-ever live primetime broadcast of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Saturday, November 3, 8-9 p.m. ET on NBC. Coverage will be hosted by Tom Hammond, who will be joined by Gary Stevens, Randy Moss and others.
The Dodgers may be opening their 2014 season down under. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the team is in advanced negotiations to bring the Dodgers to the country in a potential matchup against the Diamondbacks in a three game series. The article states that games would be televised to an audience of almost 300 million viewers across 81 countries.
ESPN announced that its 2012-13 women’s college basketball regular-season coverage plans will include a record-high 130 games, in addition to ESPN Full Court’s coverage which boosts the tally to around 260 games this season. ESPN2 offers 34 regular-season games, including the network’s season-opening game featuring Kentucky/Baylor in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic as part of the College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 6p. ESPNU will televise 25 regular-season games, including a rematch of the 2012 NCAA National Championship on Wednesday, Dec. 5 between Baylor and Notre Dame at 7p.
The World Boxing Organization recognized Telemundo as its Latino TV Network of the year at the organization’s 25th annual convention last night in South Florida. The channel’s Executive Vice President of Sports, Jorge Hidalgo, received the honor from WBO President Francisco Varcarcel. Hidalgo is credited for developing Telemundo sports franchises such as late-night boxing series Boxeo Telemundo.
FOX Sports announced several agreements for the rebranded FOX Sports New Orleans channel ahead of Hornets’ October 31 regular-season opener. With the new deals, the opening night telecast against the Spurs will now reach more than 1.5 million homes throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama on providers that include Cox Communications, DirecTV, Dish Network and AT&T U-Verse.
Speaking of distribution deals, a war of words has started between Time Warner Cable and providers such as Cox over the recently launched TWC SportsNet and TWC Deportes channels. In a statement on Wednesday, Cox wrote “The price for the Lakers is one of the highest wholesale prices that we have seen, especially when you consider it on a ‘per game’ basis: only 53 of the of the Lakers’ 82 regular season games will be exclusively available on TWC SportsNet.” However, Time Warner Cable shot back with a statement reading, “Any assertion that we are the highest priced regional sports outlet in the country is simply untrue; as a significant buyer of regional sports across the country, we know that there are higher priced regional sports networks, including Root Sports that we buy from DirecTV. Cox and DirecTV know that there is no regional sports network anywhere in the country that is offered on an optional tier — that would be unprecedented.”
Hall of Fame boxing trainer and HBO boxing analyst Emanuel Steward passed away yesterday a the age of 68. “There are no adequate words to describe the enormous degree of sadness and loss we feel at HBO Sports with the tragic passing of Manny Steward,” said Ken Hershman, President of HBO Sports. “For more than a decade, Manny was a respected colleague who taught us so much not only about the sweet science but also about friendship and loyalty. His energy, enthusiasm and bright smile were a constant presence. Ten bells do not seem enough to mourn his passing. His contributions to the sport and to HBO will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

NBA owners have tabled a movement to add corporate logos to jerseys, according to ESPN, which reported that “the parties found that selling space on jerseys is quite complicated, and they needed more time to study it before the NBA becomes the first major sports league in the U.S. to sell an ad on its jerseys.” Among the complexities of the situation were potential conflicting endorsements between a player and the team.
