Murder, She Wrote has sprung back to life on NBC. Octavia Spencer will step into Angela Lansbury‘s shoes as an amateur snoop in a pilot for the procedural, reports Deadline; Universal TV is producing. The original Murder lasted 12 seasons.
NBC is bringing back the American Comedy Awards, broadcast by ABC from 1987-2000, and Comedy Central in 2001. The reboot will be produced by Don Mischer Productions, to air in May 2014.
Arrested Development actors will reunite for an appearance on Bravo‘s Inside the Actors Studio. Host James Lipton – who appeared on Arrested as Warden Gentiles – will interview six cast members and creator Mitch Hurwitz for a show airing Thursday, November 7 at 8p.
Two new categories have been added to the Daytime Emmys: Entertainment News, for programs like Extra which haven’t had a category to call their own, and one for Outstanding New Approaches to Drama Series, for soaps with fewer than 35 original episodes.
USA‘s Suits has been renewed for a 16-episode season four. The law drama ranked among the top five series in the A18-49 demo in the third quarter; the show’s creator and exec producer, Aaron Korsh, has signed an overall deal with Suits studio Universal Cable Productions to develop new shows. The final six eps of the show’s third season will air in early 2014, after the Olympics.
TNT has ordered eight episodes of reality series Wake Up Call. The Electus production features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson motivating people facing harsh situations. TNT and TBS SVP, Unscripted Development David Eilenberg said the project is a “natural successor” to Johnson reality competition The Hero, which wrapped on TNT in August.
MTV is splitting the weekend with a “Brofest” marathon on Saturday, featuring guy-centric programming like Ridiculousness and True Life Presents: My Dad Is a Bro, and a “Girl Code” marathon Sunday, with season one of the series airing from 12p-9p. Season two of Girl Code premieres Wednesday, October 30 at 10p.
OWN presents Oprah’s Next Chapter: Gay Hollywood on Sunday, October 27 at 9p, followed by documentary Bridegroom at 10p. Gay Hollywood features actors sharing their experiences being gay; Bridegroom documents the problems faced by a man without the legal protections of marriage who lost his partner.
Documentary series Rebel Music will debut on MTV‘s 24-hour college channel mtvU on Monday, November 18 at 9p. The 30-minute series about young people using music and art to spark change in the world will “remind people of the power of the combination of music, art and activism,” said executive producer/activist Shepard Fairey.
TV One announced that News One Now, a morning news program hosted by Roland Martin analyzing politics, entertainment and sports from an African American perspective, will premiere Monday, November 4 at 9a. “When the grab for news is as competitive as it is now,” chairman Alfred Liggins tells Cynopsis, “TV One is proud to super-serve African American viewers with the information and perspective that resonates with them the most.”
Discovery is kicking off the season three premiere of Moonshiners on Monday, November 5 with a special ep at 8p featuring the ‘shiners sharing their hopes for the future and answering questions from fans. At 9p, it’s back to business, with a 500-gallon still and strawberry brandy.
Arts net Ovation is postponing the premiere of The Fashion Fund until after its re-launch in Time Warner Cable markets. Ovation was dropped from the TWC lineup at the end of 2012, but after committing to more original programming, struck a deal to return on January 1, 2014. Fashion Fund debuts Wednesday, January 22 at 10p.
One Direction and Florida Georgia Line have been added as performers at the 2013 American Music Awards. The Dick Clark Productions‘ trophy fest airs Sunday, November 24 at 8p.

Time Warner Cable and Al Jazeera America reached an agreement to bring the new news net to TWC and Bright House Networks lineups. “We said in January that we would consider Al Jazeera America,” said EVP, Chief Video and Content Officer for TWC Melinda Witmer. “Now that the channel is live, we think that it would be of value to our customers.” The channel will be launched on digital basic over the next six months in markets including New York City, LA and Dallas.
Starting Wednesday, Fox International Channels started carrying Major League Baseball games live. FIC has been on a sports shopping spree, picking up European rights to NFL football and soccer rights.
Universal Channel will debut upcoming legal drama Rake in the U.K. The buzzed-about Fedora Entertainment production, starring Greg Kinnear, bows on Fox later this fall.

On a night opposite the World Series on Fox when many shows saw a drop, ABC‘s show of faith in Super Fun Night with an extra two-ep order was rewarded with the show’s steady-as-they-go 2.1/6 in A18-49, the same rating it earned last week. Also even week to week: the net’s Nashville (1.6), CBS‘s Criminal Minds (2.7/7) and NBC‘s Revolution (1.4/4), with CBS procedural CSI actually seeing a one-tenth bump, to 2.1/6.
Tuesday’s Pretty Little Liars Halloween special and the premiere of the teen drama’s spin-off, Ravenswood, brought ABC Family its best-ever ratings for the night in Women 18-49, and ranked as TV’s number one net from 8-10p in W18-34 and Females 12-34. Ravenswood drew 2.12 million viewers and was the net’s top series premiere in W18-34 with a 2.3 rating.
Live with Kelly & Michael is nipping at Dr. Phil‘s heels in the race for most-watched daytime talker. During the week of October 7, Disney-ABC Domestic Television‘s Live was the number 2 syndicated talk show, with 3.613 million viewers versus 3.677 million for CBS TV Distribution‘s Dr. Phil.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX won the night among A18-49 viewers with 4.2/13, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen, winning every hour with the first game of the World Series. The game averaged 3.9/13 at 8p to outscore a 2.4/7 for CBS’s Survivor, surged to 4.8/14 at 9p versus a 3.0/8 average for ABC’s Modern Family and Super Fun Night, and settled in at 4.3/12 at 10p to outrun the 2.1/6 earned by CBS’s CSI.

Nicolas J. Valls is the EVP of Advertising Sales for the newly-formed Hemisphere Media Group, Inc, which targets the Hispanic TV/cable networks business. Valls will oversee national spot sales for WAPA Television and ad sales for WAPA America. Valls was with Univision for more than 25 years, most recently as an SVP in network sales.
Peter Doyle has been appointed Vice President of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. The foundation’s fundraising events help improve the quality of life for people in need in the broadcast profession.
Joanne Cetrino has joined production studio and on-demand digital network Ora.tv as Senior Vice President, Branded Integration and Media Sales. Cetrino had been Sales Director at NCM.
Pioneering sportscaster Bill Mazer died on October 24. He was 92. Mazer covered sports for over 60 years, primarily in New York, including 20 as a sports anchor and host of WNEW-TV’s weekend roundup, “Sports Extra.” Mazer was nicknamed “The Amazin'” for his extensive knowledge of sports trivia.
