Late on Wednesday, NPR terminated the contract of its senior news analyst Juan Williams following remarks he made on Bill O’Reilly’s Fox News program on Monday concerning Muslims. Williams who has been with NPR since 1996, also is a political contributor on Fox News since 1997, appearing as a panelist on Fox News Sunday and other programs. NPR’s firing of Williams has sparked much debate in conservative circles though NPR’s President/CEO Vivian Schiller explained in a memo to affiliates that this “isn’t the first time we have had serious concerns about some of Juan’s public comments.” Schiller goes on to say, “Despite many conversations and warnings over the years, Juan has continued to violate this principal.”  In this memo, Schiller clarified the reasons why Williams’ contract was terminated explaining, “NPR News analysts have a distinctive role and set of responsibilities. This is a very different role than that of a commentator or columnist. News analysts may not take personal public positions on controversial issues; doing so undermines their credibility as analysts, and that’s what’s happened in this situation.”
