Good morning. It’s Friday, October 22, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Fox‘s coverage of the seventh game in the National League Championship Series won Wednesday evening hand’s down according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Fox averaged a 11.0/27 A18-49 for the length of the game which ended at 12:01am, and 31.4 million viewers. ABC was #2 for the night with a 4.7/11, followed by NBC 3.5/8, CBS 3.3/8, UPN 2.1/5, WB 1.9/4. ABC’s Lost led the non-sports programming division at 8pm with a 6.3/16. UPN’s Top Model delivered a 2.3/6, behind Smallville’s 2.6/7 in the A18-49 demo. At 9pm the season debut of West Wing found a modest 4.0/9 demo rating, with both ABC’s The Bachelor and CSI Miami repeat pulling an 8 share. All three of the non-sports programming at 10p tied with a 10 share.

Casting / Development / Production:
Steven Cojocaro – you know, the over the top fashion stylist/guy about town seen on ET, Today and access Hollywood, and author of Red Carpet Diaries: Confessions of a Glamour Boy, has apparently shot a pilot for a daytime talker for Paramount Domestic TV, so says Hollywood Reporter. Nothing to confirm from Paramount which is traditionally tight lipped about this sort of thing.
Fox has ordered a script for a comedy project from HBO Independent Prods and writer Cindy Caponera, based in large part on Caponera’s life. She was a writer for SNL, as well as worked on several other primetime comedy series.
Steve R. Schirripa, Sopranos bad guy, has signed a development deal with Mouse House’s Touchstone TV, to star in a comedy based on his book, A Goomba’s Guide to Life, according to Hollywood Reporter.
ESPN‘s new drama series Tilt (premieres January 13) has cast Eddie Cibrian and Chris Bauer. The show is a dramatization of the world of high stakes tournament poker; Cibrian’s character is one of the players, while Bauer plays a sheriff.
KeKe & Jamal is a pilot ordered by Disney Channel about a crotchety old man suddenly saddled with raising his two little grandchildren, starring KeKe Palmer. The project is being produced by Ralph Farquhar and Claude Brookes.
Fox has ordered a pilot presentation of a project called Grandmaster Freak & the Furious 15, an animated comedy project about the early start-up days of rap and hip hop, from Cube Vision (Ice Cube) and producer/scribe David X. Cohen, per Variety.
Senator John Kerry has formally decided not to participate in Sinclair Broadcasting‘s POW Story: Politics, Pressure and the Media, which will include portions of the anti-Kerry film Stolen Honor and is scheduled to air this evening. Sinclair Broadcasting has also formally declined the offer from Deborah Rappaport and husband Andy Rappaport to purchase for $1 million an hour of primetime to air the documentary Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry, produced by George Butler. Sinclair says its primetime is not for sale and while talks did ensue as to how Sinclair might include excerpts of this pro-Kerry doc into its POW Story special, those talks didn’t amount to anything concrete. Meanwhile, George Butler has filed suit in a NY Federal court to stop Sinclair from airing his documentary, as well as prevent the broadcast group from including any of the thousands of photographs Butler has taken of Kerry over the past 35 years, citing potential copyright violations.

Nickelodeon and ABC Family Channel were both slapped with the FCC’slargest monetary penalty against children’s TV broadcasters for “potential’ violations of rules concerning kid’s TV commercial content, as set-forth in the 1990 Children’s Television Act. Viacom on behalf of Nick, and Walt Disney Company on behalf of ABC Family Channel, entered into a consent decree with the FCC whereby the media companies paid fines of $1m and $500,000 respectively. The violations were identified as part of what the FCC refers to as, “routine audits conducted by Enforcement Bureau field agents,” during the 4Q 2003, when it was discovered that the amount of commercial content during kid’s TV programs on both networks exceeded the FCC regulatory limits (12m per hour during the week in kids pgming, and 10.5m per hour on the weekends). Both channels were also cited for allegedly advertising products that tied in with the programming. Also a Children Television Act no-no. Both ABC Family and Nickelodeon cited internal computer system problems as the source of possible errors.
