ESPN and ABC NBA pre-game show Kia NBA Countdown is getting a facelift, with Grantland Editor-in-Chief Bill Simmons and ESPN analyst Jalen Rose joining Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Michael Wilbon on the show this season. The new Countdown quartet will officially debut Friday, Nov. 2, at 7p with a one-hour pre-game telecast ahead of ESPN’s season-opening doubleheader featuring Heat/ Knicks at 8p and Clippers/Lakers at 10:30p. With the additions, Jon Barry will transition to game analysis with regular assignments throughout the season, and Chris Broussard will continue to serve as ESPN NBA Insider for SportsCenter and other news and information programming.

On the Air

The PGA TOUR is taking over the Canadian Tour. The organization announced that it was assuming operational control of what will now become PGA TOUR Canada in 2013 with conversion starting Nov. 1. PGA TOUR Canada will debut with a minimum of eight tournaments in 2013 offering a minimum purse of $150,000, with the goal of eventually growing to 12 or 13 events. The company also announced that it will work with Canadian media outlets including television partners, Shaw/Global TV and TSN, to broaden coverage of PGA TOUR Canada.

TBS’s presentation of MLB’s ALCS Game 3 on Tuesday drew a 4.0 household rating from Nielsen with 6,180,000 total viewers, based on Nielsen Fast Nationals. Those numbers are up 44% among total viewers and 43% in U.S. household rating compared with the network’s coverage last year of Game 3 of the National League Championship Series (NLCS) between the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers.

ESPN is taking Baseball Tonight on a road trip for the 108thMLB World Series with pre-game and post-game telecasts every game day from site of the event beginning with Game 1 on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The Baseball Tonight set will be positioned outside of the venue in both World Series locations with Karl Ravech and Steve Berthiaume aboard as hosts and commentators that include John Kruk, Barry Larkin, Curt Schilling, Aaron Boone, Rick Sutcliffe, Buster Olney and Tim Kurkjian. Additionally, recently named Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona will serve as a guest analyst in his final assignment with ESPN.

ESPN Audio inked a two-year deal with the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association to make ESPN Audio the official national radio home of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. Under terms, ESPN Audio will broadcast the 2013 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic, which matches the Big 12 against the Southeastern Conference, on Friday, Jan. 4. The agreement also provides ESPN rights for all forms of audio, as well as ESPN Deportes Radio which will present the first Spanish broadcast of the Classic.

Talks have broken down once again between the NHL and the Players’ Association in an effort to lock in a CBA and begin the season. Commissioner Gary Bettman said the players offered three counter proposals to the league’s offer of a 50-50 split but noted that “we’re not speaking the same language in terms of what they came back to us with.”

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel returns on Tuesday, Oct. 23 on HBO with segments that include: a look at Michael Strahan’s new life; a visit with the Iowa City West High School girls’ volleyball team to see how they overcame two tragedies in a five-month span; a look at why athletes are reluctant to reveal their sexual orientation; and a look at the impact of NFL Films pioneer Ed Sabol and his son Steve.

Tennis Channel hits Istanbul, Turkey, from October 23-28 with nearly 40 hours of live coverage set for the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships next week. Tennis Channel will carry all singles round-robin matches and both semifinals live, with a same-day encore of the championship match on Sunday, October 28. Both doubles semifinals and championship matches also will be live, followed by same-day encores. Brett Haber will handle singles play by play for the network during the WTA Championships, with assists from analysts Lindsay Davenport and Corina Morariu.

Writer/Director Pete Farrelly will serve as the keynote speaker at the 4th Annual All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival next month in North Hollywood. This year’s festival will screen 56 films from 10 countries and span content ranging from spec commercials to feature length films. Jury and judges include ESPN Sideline Reporter Holly Rowe, ESPN Color Commentators Dan Dakich and Rebecca Lobo, and 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist and Most Outstanding Boxer of the Games, Howard Davis, Jr.

The 2012 USA Pro Challenge, a cycling race that spanned Aug. 20-26 this year, reached attendance numbers of more than 1 million according to event organizers. Officials state that after traveling to 12 towns, the estimated economic impact of the race to Colorado reached $99.6 million, according to a study done by IFM North America, a global sports research firm.

Cubs commentator Bob Brenly has left the team and will return to Arizona, where he will join Steve Berthiaume as the new broadcast duo for the D-backs, according to local reports. The pair replace Mark Grace and Daron Sutton in the booth. Brenly was a one-time manager for the team.

Could Danica Patrick break her streak of Super Bowl commercials? Sponsor Go Daddy announced that the company has hired Deutsch Inc. to produce its two 30-second Super Bowl spots, this year, marking the first time the website domain provider has not gone internal for the spots for the big game.

GLAAD announced that six sports leagues will be participating in Spirit Day today, in an effort to prevent bullying and show support for LGBT youth. Leagues participating include the NFL, NBA & WNBA, the NHL, MLB, MLS and NASCAR’s diversity program, who will all “go purple” for the cause.

PrimeSport locked in a new partnership with Florida Citrus Sports where the company will serve as the official hospitality and travel provider for the Russell Athletic Bowl and Capital One Bowl, played on Dec. 28 and Jan. 1 respectively.

Congrats to Mary Wittenberg, President and CEO of the New York Road Runners, and Tony Petitti, President and CEO of MLB Network, who will both be honored with the Sports Leadership and Corporate Leadership Awards, respectively, by the March of Dimes New York Division at its 29th Annual Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, November 28 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.

NBA Digital announced a new state-of-the-art NBA TV studio, a redesigned NBA.com home page and completely refreshed mobile sites for NBA.com and all 30 teams, just in time for the new season. The redesigned NBA.com home page will look to showcase expanded video features and offer enhanced social functionality while the mobile sites will also expand video offerings while introducing a new social ticker allowing fans to follow league news in real time.

Pac-12 Networks are now available to customers on their iPhone and iPod Touch devices via Pac-12 Now. The platform gives fans the ability to authenticate with their TV provider username to watch the 24/7 live Pac-12 Networks wherever they are. Additional features of Pac-12 Now app for iPhone and iPod Touch include a unique programming guide for easy navigation to live and upcoming content, condensed games and other on demand video, as well as a live scoreboard.
