Cynopsis: DIGITAL

10/17/08

Good morning, it’s Friday, October 17, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The online ad industry breathed a collective sigh of relief as Google reported solid Q3 earnings, bringing in $5.54 billion in revenue (up 31% y/y and 3% from Q2) and $1.35 billion in net revenue. AdSense partners also did well as partner sites generated $1.68 billion, a slight uptick from last quarter. While cognizant of the global economic malaise, Google CEO Eric Schmidt painted an upbeat picture of the future, predicting that the web will ultimately benefit from tighter consumer budgets. The earnings announcement was timed to coincide with the unveiling of the T-Mobile G1 – the first phone to run Google’s mobile Android operating system.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The iTunes store has now become a depository of HD primetime programming from all 4 major TV networks. Shows from ABC (Grey’s Anatomy and Lost), CBS (CSI and CSI: Miami), FOX (Prison Break), and NBC Universal (Heroes and The Office) fill out a line up that includes more than 70 primetime comedies and dramas in HD. iTunes says it has now sold over 200 million TV episodes, including more than 1 million HD episodes since last month’s launch of HD programming. iTunes is currently showcasing Halloween-themed episodes like the Peanuts classic It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, available for the first time on the platform. (Digital nostalgia ain’t cheap at $10 for a 25 minute special, but there are a couple of bonus titles thrown in for that price: It’s Magic Charlie Brown and Lucy Must Be Traded, Charlie Brown.)

The AP will do its part to make sure Americans stay informed on Election Night, streaming Big Issue: Election Results on its Online Video Network, which serves clips to a network of more than 2,000 newspaper, local TV and other publisher sites.

TheWB.com introduced its latest original series slated to launch in December, Children’s Hospital, created by The Daily Show’s Rob Corddry. Rob stars with an ensemble cast of doctors (including Megan Mullally as The Chief) who exhibit all kinds of inappropriate behavior in front of the terminally ill pre-teens. WBTVG’s in house Studio 2.0 is producing.

UK multiplatform programmer ITN On joined client-based broadband IPTV service Livestation, which has become a popular source for world news for PC users. It joins a range of major providers including the BBC, Bloomberg, C-SPAN, France 24 and Russia Today on the platform. ITN On will provide a 24/7 made-for-broadband news channel covering news, sports, entertainment and business.

LGBT-focused Regent Media launched SheWired.com, a new female targeted community site focusing on pop culture, politics, travel, health and lifestyle. SheWired is Regent’s GayWired Media’s latest addition to its family of sites.

Call for Content: iN Demand’s Howard TV On Demand is asking diehard Howard Stern fans to post their favorite Howard memories to help construct an interactive timeline of the show featuring photos, videos and flipbooks. There’s even an embeddable widget to display Howard’s greatest hits on your Facebook or MySpace page.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Facebook unveiled the 25 winning applications developed under the fbFund, a program that will give each winner $25,000 to go toward develop their new ideas. Check out the rundown on the Facebook developer’s blog. Bottle Rocket, which will exist both online and as an iPhone app, looks like a winner. It allows you to compare notes with your friends on what wines they like and dislike to help you make an informed decision on the spot.

San Francisco-based INgrooves today launched a music licensing site powered by YouLicense.com as an easy-to-use resource for media firms, production studios and individuals seeking to identify and license music from the INgrooves catalog. It’s an useful resource particularly if you’re not sure what exactly you’re looking for. The search engine allows to search by artist, genre, similar sounding artist or even mood including “caring,” “curious,” “groovy” and “grand.”

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Exciting news: the first Android-powered handset, the T-Mobile G1 has an official street date of Oct. 22. Comparisons to the iPhone are inevitable; both run on 3G or Wi-Fi, both offer the ability to download open platform applications from third party developers and both offer robust mobile internet experiences manipulated through a touch screen. What’s more interesting is how it differs from the iPhone:

  • The sliding case reveals a full button-laden keyboard instead of a touch screen version
  • The G1 comes with a removable battery and expandable memory cards, instead of having to send it into the manufacturer for replacement
  • It’s cheaper to buy ($179 w/2 year contract vs. $199 for the iPhone) and cheaper to operate. The data plan costs $25/month including 400 free txt messages, which AT&T charges extra for
  • Now the bad news: There’s only 128 megabytes of memory for apps – that’s not much
  • The G1 doesn’t support Microsoft exchange, which means you’re stuck with using G-mail and Google contact and calendar apps

Jonesing to check it out? Try T-Mobile’s online emulator program to give the user interface a whirl.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Harris Corp.
signed a deal to integrate its broadcast traffic systems with the Google TV Ads platform, providing an automated method for Harris Paradigm, OSi-Traffic, BMS and Novar traffic system users to purchase inventory through Google TV Ads channels. In a separate deal direct response advertising company CoreMedia Systems also agreed to integrate Google TV Ads into its analytics platform to track responses and sales data from client calls centers and web servers.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Radiohead‘s grand experiment apparently paid off according to stats released yesterday by Warner Chappell acquired by Music Ally. When the band released its latest album In Rainbows as a digital download last year, it gave fans the option to pay what they thought was fair for it. It turns out the album sold better than their previous release, selling 1.75 million hard copy CDs and 30,000 units on iTunes in the U.S. during its first week. It was #1 on the charts in the U.S. and UK for 3 months and is still in the top 200 albums.

Ratings-challenged NBC is making the case that its programs are being seen by a huge audience when multiple platforms are added to the mix, reports TVWeek. For instance, NBC’s latest TAMi or Total Audience Measurement Index figures reveal that the premiere of The Office generated an aggregate 22.5 million impressions including 15.5 million on TV, 6.9 million streams online, 37,515 downloads (via iTunes, MSN and Amazon), 33,389 views on VOD and 37,775 via mobile devices. These numbers dropped across all platforms for the Oct. 9 episode however, to 12.8 million aggregate impressions including 10.9 million on TV, 1.9 million via streaming, 14,648 via downloads, 7,070 on VOD and 11,104 on mobile.

Here are some nuggets of info from YouTube CEO Chad Hurley’s keynote at MIPCOM this week courtesy of Screen Daily, where the young executive outlined the company’s new “4 R” strategy designed to appeal to mainstream content providers: Reach, Research, Revenue and Rights

  • YouTube currently has partnerships with 900 content providers worldwide
  • Each day 13 hours of content is uploaded to the platform per minute, the equivalent of releasing 57,000 Hollywood movies per week

ComScore announced it is offering a new enhanced reporting option which dramatically increases the number of reportable properties in key global markets to better measure the activity of the “long tail.”

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Glam Media hired former CFO of Shutterfly Stephen E. Recht as Chief Financial Officer, reporting to Chairman and CEO Samir Arora. Stephen takes on the role formerly held by Glam Media co-founder Ernie Cicogna, who will remain with the company as EVP of Glam Partners and GM of the Glam Publisher Network. Separately, co-founder Dianna Mullins will expand her role to include VP/Culture and Employee Relations.

ContentNext has hired Former Deputy Editor of The Wall Street Journal’s Media and Technology Group Ernie Sander as to be Managing Editor across all of its brands.

Former Comedy Central SVP/Promotion and Marketing Mitch Fried has been upped to President of the new Comedy Central Live Entertainment division, tasked with distributing stand-up, live tours and other comedy performances across multiple platforms.

Destination Media appointed Vivian Alhermizi as Account Manager for the Oak Park, Mich.-based region. She will aid in the efforts to manage, maintain and maximize client relations for Destination Media’s Gas Station TV and C-Store TV networks in the region, and will focus on advertiser program management.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Yesterday really was a big day for Google. The company introduced an update to its customizable homepage creator iGoogle that puts a renewed emphasis on the widgets that make up your homepage. Click on one of the 16 that supports the new “canvas view” feature and the widget expands to fill the whole screen. With this kind of exposure, developers will be able to build all kinds of increased functionality into their applications. And the company currently doesn’t allow ads or revenue-generating widgets, so they shouldn’t be cluttered up with junk. In some senses, homepage engines like iGoogle and Netvibes have been lost in the shuffle of social networking. More innovation here could create a whole new Trojan horse for content developers.
