~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

In an update on the retransmission-consent agreement dispute between Cablevision Systems Corporation and News Corp.: Late on Wednesday, Cablevision sent News Corp. a new proposal and both entities continue negotiations on details for a new agreement. Cablevision also consented to submit bipartisan calls from various politicians calling for binding arbitration to make sure a new deal with New Corp. is reached without pulling Fox 5 and My9 off of Cablevision.

Charles Schueler, Executive VP/Communications at Cablevision said, “We will work around the clock to reach a new agreement and have appealed to News Corp. not to pull the plug on Fox 5 and My9.Cablevision would never take these broadcast stations away from our customers. While we would rather come to terms directly with News Corp., binding arbitration may be the best and fairest way to resolve this matter. Therefore, Cablevision will accept the bipartisan calls from Reps. Steve Israel and Peter King for binding arbitration under the direction of a neutral third party.”

In response to Cablevision’s request for binding arbitration, FOX released this statement:

“We appreciate Representatives King and Israel’s requests for Cablevision and Fox to enter binding arbitration and we share their concerns for protecting viewers’ access to programming.Binding arbitration would, unfortunately, reward Cablevision for refusing to negotiate fairly and will only ensure that more unnecessary disputes arise in the future.

Direct business-to-business negotiation is the only way to resolve this issue, while also preserving the long-term stability of the broadcast system. We continue to negotiate and are committed to putting all our resources towards reaching a fair resolution.”

According to Cablevision, News Corp. currently receives $70 million per year for its channels on Cablevision, and now News Corp. is asking for more than $150 million a year for the same programming.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

E! picked up the Washington, D.C.-based reality show pilot from Rob Lowe titled Potomac Fever. The reality series, produced via Lowe’s Loweprofile production company and reality producer 44 Blue, centers on real-life aspiring politicos as they attempt to move up the power ladder in D.C.

FOX has a new comedy in development from playwright David Talbert and actor-turned-producer Morris Chestnut titled It Takes a Village, cites Variety. The comedy is about a young R&B singer who lost his money after trusting his best friend and business manager. The singer moves back to his old home base in the inner city where he ends up working at a community center for at-risk youth and becomes a mentor. 20th Century Fox TV is developing the project. Talbert and Chestnut will serve as executive producers along with Steven Greener of 5 Boroughs Entertainment and Brian Wilkins.

Louise Fletcher, remembered for her role as Nurse Ratched in the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, landed a role in ABC’s Private Practice, per TV Guide. Fletcher will play Pete’s mother and will first appear in this season’s ninth episode. Fletcher also recently appeared in NBC’s Heroes.

Casting Call: The new network, Mnet has a VJ/Host position available for a new program about today’s Asian and American pop music.
