Cynopsis: Sports
10/14/11
Good morning. It’s Friday, October 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
HBO Sports has reportedly found its replacement for Ross Greenburg, tapping Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Showtime Sports, to fill the President post. Greenburg left his role as head of the division in July, and his successor brings plenty of experience in boxing, HBO’s staple sport, to the table. An official announcement is expected soon. Hershman is slated to start the job in January.
ESPN may have the lost the NBA for the time being, but the company is still ready for some hoops this fall, announcing a slate of over 300 non conference men’s college basketball games this year. The slate will also feature ESPN3 expanding its inventory to nearly 100 exclusive games. The action is set to begin on Monday, Nov. 7and run through the 13-game, two-day Sears Brackets Busters event on February 17-18. At least one team from each of the 31 conferences will be televised on an ESPN network as part of the non-conference coverage. ESPNU is set to will tip off the season with a doubleheader from the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer with William & Mary/St. John’s at 7p followed by Valparaiso/Arizona at 9p.
The return of hockey has seen some upticks across multiple platforms. VERSUS opened its seventh year of NHL coverage with the most-watched regular season game in the network’s history as 874,000 viewers tuned in to the Flyers/Bruins contest. Viewership was up 20% over last year’s opening game. Online, NHL.com experienced 9% more visitors during the first week Thur.-Wed.) versus last year’s record traffic numbers for same time period.
With two smaller markets duking it out in the NLCS, and the weather pushing the ALCS to a competing timeslot, TBS hasn’t been able to catch a break that would forward the momentum built from the LDS. In fact, the channel is coming off championship series that past two years that feature four of the top five DMA markets and now features the 21st market facing the 34th, the smallest market match since 1990. With that said, Game 3 of the series gave the channel a 2.8 household rating and 4.2 million viewers, for a drop of 46% in ratings and 48% in viewership from Game 3 last year’s ALCS on TBS. Game 3 did grow 40% over the delivery of games one and two of the series.
FOX, meanwhile, saw ALCS Game 4 experience a two-hour plus rain delay that pushed the game into prime time. The extra-innings contest drew an audience of 8.4 million viewers, with a 5.2/9. That rating, coupled with competition from TBS’ NLCS coverage, is off 9% from last year’s games.
Golf Channel scored its best-ever start to the Fall Series with record ratings for the Frys.com Open. The tournament featured a first-ever appearance by Tiger Woods in a PGA Tour Fall Series event and drew 727,000 average viewers, for a 165% spike over last year and a 0.7 household rating. Meanwhile, for the first time in 2011, Golf Channel began coverage of all five professional golf tours in the same week yesterday, featuring nearly 50 hours of tournament action through Sunday with the McGladrey Classic, the Miccosukee Championship, the AT&T Championship, the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia and the Portugal Masters.
Former Duke greats Grant Hill and Christian Laettner are on the same team once again, signing a deal with Turner Sports to deliver “an inside look at one of the most-storied college basketball programs in the history of the game.” The duo will help create the new documentary Duke ’91 & ’92 that will air on truTV ahead of the 2012 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship. The special will look at the key players, Hall of Fame coach and memorable moments from the era.
Univision’s coverage of the Mexico/Brazil match on Tuesday scored as the top broadcast program of the night among Adults 18-34, regardless of language. Overall the game averaged 4.5 million persons 2+, 2.9 million adults 19-49 and 1.7 million adults 18-34. Thus far in the 2011-12 season, the game ranks as the top sports telecast among Hispanic Total Viewers 2+, Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49, Men 18-34 and Men 18-49, according to Nielsen.
For the second year in a row, ESPNU is set to televise ACC Basketball Media Day from its Charlotte, N.C. studios. The ACC coverage will begin at noon on Wednesday Oct. 19 with four hours of live coverage and features of coaches and players previewing the upcoming season. Wednesday’s special will also include live coverage from Big East media day as well. ESPNU host Dari Nowkhah and college basketball analysts Dino Gaudio and Adrian Branch will all be in-studio for the event.
Sponsorship & Promotion
Dollar General has inked a deal with Joe Gibbs Racing to sponsor Joey Logano for 12 races next year. Team owner Joe Gibbs said Home Depot will continue to be the primary sponsor on the No. 20 Toyota.
While we’re on NASCAR, Activision is creating a “Battle of the NASCAR Kids”championship tournament from Nov. 19-20 at Homestead-Miami Speedway where the company will give children a chance to play upcoming arcade-racing video game NASCAR Unleashed, for a chance to be crowned champ and raise $25,000 for the NASCAR Foundation. The game will be out on Nov. 1.
XOS Digital announced the launch of two new college sports apps on Boxee’s Internet TV platform, marking the first time a company has brought college sports to the software. This service will stream programming that includes pre-game analysis from the XOS Digital Studio during the week, post-game highlights, and classic games and documentaries dating back to the 1950’s.

ON THIS DAY in 1979: Wayne Gretzky scores his first NHL goal
Answer to Yesterday’s Sports Trivia Question: Name at least three players who have won multiple Super Bowl MVPs. Answer: Only four players have won the honor more than once: Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana and Tom Brady. (Aikman only won once!) Kudos: Noah Coslov – CineSport/NY; Phyllis McQuillan – MSG Media/NY; Matthew Meachem – Tribune Media Services/Queensbury; Theresa M. McCann – NBC Sports/NY; Scott Fairhurst – Comcast Spotlight/Albuquerque; Warren Weideman – Producer/LA; Jamey Madden – Disney/Burbank
In The Know: What was the last NHL team Wayne Gretzky played for? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
