Cynopsis: Sports
11.08.13

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

ESPN is renewing the State Farm Champions Classic for another three years. The event is set to tip off its third annual lineup on Nov. 12 with the quartet of Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and Michigan State set to play the neutral site doubleheader. In 2014, the event will be held in Indianapolis, with Chicago in deck in 2015 and New York City in 2016. The matchups will continue to be the culminating games of ESPN’s College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.

On the Air

ESPN’s first Wednesday NBA doubleheader of the season, which featured Chicago/Indiana and Dallas/Oklahoma City, generated an average 1.7 overnight rating, up 55% from the first ESPN Wednesday doubleheader in 2012, according to Nielsen. On the local front, the Tulsa market delivered a 3.6 score for the Mavericks-Thunder game, which is the third-highest rated NBA regular-season game on ESPN ever in Tulsa.

Around the dial on NBA TV, the ratings trend continues. Through the opening week of the 2013-14 NBA regular season, the channel is averaging 396,000 total viewers for six telecasts, marking an increase of 8% compared with an average of 366,000 total viewers over the same time period last year. So far, the network’s most-viewed telecast to start the season was the Lakers/Warriors on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 10:30p, which drew an average of 595,000 total viewers.

In other ratings news, the NFL writes that at the halfway point of the season, the league accounts for the 18 most-watched programs on TV since the season began, with Sunday Night Football accounting for seven of those telecasts. The average NFL game telecast this season reels in 16.8 million viewers, up over 16 million a year ago.

NBC Sports Group revealed that since the Premier League season began on August 17, with 100 matches in the books, 12 million viewers have tuned in, up 82% over year ago numbers. This past weekend’s Arsenal/Liverpool match on NBC ranked as the most-watched game of the season with an average

Continuing our ratings theme, FOX Deportes announced that the channel ranked as the top U.S. Latino Sports brand in 2013 with the network leading all U.S. Latino Sports networks year-to-date in total viewers and persons 18-49 in both total day 6a-6a Monday-Sunday, and Hispanic prime time 7p-11p Monday-Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research. Additionally, FOX Deportes’ Spanish broadcast of Major League Baseball’s World Series averaged 215,000 total viewers and 135,000 persons 18-49, up 22% for total viewers and up 41% for persons 18-49 vs. the 2012 World Series.

ESPN released broadcast assignments for its talent for the 2013-14 women’s college basketball regular-season. Highlights this year will see Rebecca Lobo will join the studio team, working with returning anchor Kevin Negandhi and analyst Kara Lawson during Championship Week Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. The new ESPN Sunday franchise will be primarily called by Pam Ward and Carolyn Peck. Beth Mowins will team with Stephanie White for most of the Big Monday series, beginning in January 13.

Earlier this week Shanghai announced its intentions to nab the 2022 Winter Olympics, now Oslo is throwing its hat into the ring as well. Multiple reports state that Oslo is considered one of the favorites to win its bid but will face candidates that could include Munich, Almaty in Kazakhstan, Lviv in Ukraine and a joint bid from Krakow in Poland and neighboring Slovakia.

For the first time ever, two Goodyear blimps will simultaneously provide live aerial television coverage of a sporting event. The event will take place during ESPN’s coverage of Virginia Tech/Miami at SunLife Stadium at 7p. Weather permitting, the Spirit of Goodyear and the Spirit of Innovation will each provide a unique feed to ESPN allowing the broadcaster to select the best angle of the aerial shot.

With college basketball season officially live, CBS Sports Network enters the fray tonight at 9p with USC/Utah State at 9p. Tom McCarthy and Pete Gillen call the action from Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah.

American Express and the NBA are launching a “first-of-its-kind” digital destination on NBA.com, dubbed Off the Court. The content will examine the personal passions, pursuits and interests of players and will feature live video chats with NBA players, legends and coaches, a multi-part video series around the players’ passions, daily posts from basketball insiders, contests and more throughout the season. The site will also give fans access to special offers, ticket and merchandise promotions from NBATickets.com and NBAStore.com, along with the opportunity to win prizes.

Jaguar is gearing up for the brand’s first television commercial produced for the Super Bowl. The spot is themed “British Villains,” and will push the launch of the new Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe. The ad is scheduled to have its broadcast debut on Fox during the second half of Super Bowl XLVIII. The campaign asks the question, “Have you ever noticed how in Hollywood movies, all the villains are played by Brits?” It will launch with a unique hashtag, #GoodToBeBad, linking to the overall allure of the F-TYPE Coupe and British villains.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, USA Today reports that the Bug Light Hotel will reach a whole new level with the brand teaming up with Norwegian Cruise Lines to host to around 4,000 guests aboard the brand new Norwegian Getaway and will serve as the home of the annual Bud Light-themed hotel ahead of the Super Bowl. The entire ship will be themed around the beverage and will host concerts and parties on the boat.

Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes announced that beginning with the new year, the brand will serve as The Official Automotive Paint of NASCAR. The announcement expands May’s news that the Sherwin-Williams Company signed a multi-year partnership designating the nation’s largest specialty retailer of paint and painting supplies as the ‘Official Paint of NASCAR.’

Just ahead of Veterans Day, the NFL and the NFL Players Association announced that as part of their annual Salute to Service campaign, for every point scored during the NFL’s 32 designated Salute to Service games, the league will donate $100 to each of its three core, military non-profit partners  the Pat Tillman Foundation, USO, and Wounded Warrior Project (WWP)  for a total of $300 per point. Last year, the first year of the campaign, saw the NFL donate nearly $800,000 as a result of the initiative.

Meanwhile, NASCAR Chairman & CEO Brian France and his wife Amy donated $50,000 to help wounded military members at the ‘Stand Up For Heroes’ benefit at Madison Square Garden. The Frances helped raise nearly $5 million at the event to help the families of those military service men and women, who were wounded in action. “Brian and I were honored to make this donation to support our military servicemen and woman and their families, who make incredible sacrifices each and every day to help protect our nation,” said Amy France.

The New York Rangers and Celebrity Cruises announced a new marketing partnership that makes Celebrity Cruises the Official Cruise Line of the Rangers. The affiliation will give Blueshirt fans access to exclusive offers from Celebrity Cruises, including the first-ever Rangers Legends Cruise. In addition, Celebrity Cruises will have integration on the Rangers’ team websites; on GardenVision, the new state-of-the-art center-hung multimedia display; as well as on-ice branding and digital signage during the Rangers Legends Cruise shooting contests.

Sony revealed that the PS4 will feature both apps for both NBA Game Time and NHL GameCenter Live in the United States with its launch on Nov. 15. In addition, NHL GameCenter Live will be available next week in Canada and NBA GameTime available later in the month. NBA GameTime will also launch later in November in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Chile.

According to figures released by Nielsen SocialGuide, FOX ranked as the most social TV network for the fourth week in a row with over 3.9 million tweets from 1.3 million unique authors. FOX Sports accounted for 85% (3 million) of the total tweets referencing FOX programming, anchored by World Series Games 5 and 6 and the NFL. The final game of the World Series drew over 1.6 million Tweets from 623,192 unique authors.
