NBC canceled freshman spy series Undercovers from J.J. Abrams, opting to not pick up a full season of the show. NBC will air three of the remaining episodes November 10, November 17 and December 1 with three other episodes left though NBC has not said when or if those eps will air. This last Wednesday in its 8p time slot, Undercovers averaged a 1.3/4 among A18-49 with 5.8 million total viewers. Warner Bros. Television produces the series along with Abrams’ company Bad Robot.

Tonight, ABC is opening a sixth season of Supernanny though British nanny and star of the series, Jo Frost says this is her last season. Frost says she is quitting because she wants to “create more balance” in her life and looks forward to having her own family. During the last run of Supernanny, the show will concentrate on the parenting challenges facing younger mothers who are teens and in their 20s.

Nielsen reported a combined average of 35 million viewers watched the 2010 mid-term election coverage on Tuesday night from 9-11p on eight broadcast and cable networks. The networks include ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, UNI, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC.

During the month of October, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart was the top late-night show among A18-49, which is says marks the first time a show other than NBC’s The Tonight Show or CBS’ Late Night with David Letterman claimed #1 for a full month since at least 2000. The Daily Show attracted an average of 1.3 million viewers each night during October while The Tonight Show and Late Night drew in 1.2 million viewers each. Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report ranked fourth with 900,000 viewers.

Oxygen approved a sixth season of its Bad Girls Club series from Bunim-Murray Productions. Season six, which is heading back to Los Angeles, has commenced production with a launch date set for next year. Oxygen will additionally air the two-part Bad Girls Club Miami reunion special on November 16 and November 23 at 9p. Perez Hilton will once again serve as host of this special.

Joseph F. Cifarelli of New York, passed away on November 1, 2010, after a brief illness.  He was 78.  Joe is perhaps most recently remembered as being EVP/Sales for Multimedia where he sold advertising for an up and coming talking show starring Phil Donahue, as well as many other syndicated shows that followed.  In the early days of his career, Joe worked in the Media Department at Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, before eventually moving on to Avco, RTVR (RKO Television Rep firm) where he was VP/Sales before heading over to Multimedia.  Joe was widely admired in the industry, not a person could say a negative thing about him.  He donated his time in his retirement generously to his local parish, many charitable organizations, as well as his family – wife Mary for 48 years; children Paul, Mark, Stephen and Christopher; and five grandchildren.  Donations in Joe’s name can be made to the St. Judes Children’s Hospital, 272 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC picked up producer Mark Burnett’s new show, Expedition Impossible described as an “Indiana Jones-style” experience. The show follows teams of three people as they race across rough terrain while trying to solve puzzles. Expedition Impossible is slated to premiere next summer and Burnett will serve as executive producer. Casting is currently under way for the show.

FOX is working with screenwriter John Hamburg (I Love You, Man, Meet the Parents) on a new untitled comedy project. Hamburg has a blind script deal with 20th Century Fox Television and this project is part of that overall deal. The comedy, written by Hamburg and Ian Helfer, is about a father and son who become roommates after each gets divorced. 20th Century Fox TV and Peter Chernin’s production company is behind this project.

NBA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist, Chris Mullin is now a Studio Analyst with ESPN. Mullin will be part of ESPN’s Kia NBA Countdown pre-game show in addition to other ESPN NBA studio shows during the season. Mullin made his debut on the network October 22.

Casting Call: South Asian network Zee TV launched a national talent search in the US for its new reality competition show, Dance India Dance Doubles. To apply for the show, contestants must be between 16 to 35 years old, a person of Indian Origin/Non-Resident Indian/local citizen and a trained professional in at least two different dance styles such as hip hop, modern contemporary ballroom, jive, salsa and classical Indian. Tuesday  A18-49 Analysis:  In a night mixed with elections and entertainment, ABC was the winner Tuesday at 2.4/7 with A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, ABC waltzed into first place with Dancing with the Stars Results at 2.8/8 followed by NBC’s The Biggest Loser at 2.4/7. ABC was victorious again at 9p with the final half-hour of Dancing with the Stars Results and ABC News’ Vote 2010 averaging a 2.9/7 while CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles repeat and UNIV’s Soy Tu Duena tied for #2 at 2.3/6 apiece. Then at 10p, NBC News’ Decision election coverage did best at 1.7/5 and ABC’s and CBS’ midterm election updates shared the second spot at 1.3/4 each.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS led a rally to #1 Wednesday night with a 3.3/9 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. During the 8p hour, CBS began primetime a winner with Survivor: Nicaragua at 3.7/11 with ABC’s comedies The Middle and Better With You averaging a 2.7/8 in second place. A tie occurred at 9p between the average of ABC’s sitcoms Modern Family and Cougar Town and CBS’ Criminal Minds at 3.9/10 each with UNIV’s Soy Tu Duena trailing at #2 with 2.5/7. CBS had the final win of the night as The Defenders delivered a 2.3/7 at 10p followed by NBC’s Law & Order: LA at 1.9/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Elisa Freeman was elevated to SVP/Global Distribution Operations and Education Business with Discovery Communications. Elisa will manage all facets of the company’s distribution operations, execution and compliance globally. Elisa will also head Discovery’s global strategy and business development for Discovery Education.

Communications agency PCI Communications Inc. with offices in New York and Washington handed out four advancements to executives as part of a new restructuring plan and streamlined operational base:

  • Edith Bullard is now SVP/Marketing Communications where she focuses on PCI’s media and public relations campaigns.
  • Nasrin Noory was upped to Director/Finance and Administration where she manages corporate budgeting, human relations, payroll and internal office affairs.
  • Hal Schild was promoted to SVP/Production where he functions as overall director of PCI’s event, multimedia and video productions.
  • Danielle Whelton was boosted to the newly-created position of VP/Operations to head project management and PCI’s graphics and web teams.

Alyssa Corcoran was bumped to SVP/Communications, TV Networks and Digital Distribution with NBC Universal. Alyssa will continue to be the company’s lead public relations contact for the various distribution teams, overseeing the media and communications efforts for the distribution strategy of content as well as cable networks Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, Syfy, USA Network in addition to the Olympics across all platforms. Alyssa will further continue to be based in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and report jointly to Bridget Baker, President/TV Networks Distribution, NBC Universal and JB Perrette, President/Digital and Affiliate Distribution, NBC Universal.

Turner Sports hired Dave Moll as Senior Director/Business Operations, NCAA Digital and also promoted Alex Vargas to Senior Director/PGATOUR.COM and Justin Williams to Senior Director/NASCAR.COM. Dave and Alex will report to Mark Johnson, VP/Business Operations for PGATOUR.COM and NCAA Digital. Justin will report to Matthew Hong, SVP/GM of Sports Digital, Turner Sports.

As of Monday, Errol Louis will be part of NY1’s political team as Anchor of Inside City Hall. Previously, Errol was with the Daily News as a columnist writing on politics and social affairs and also served on the paper’s editorial board. Errol also formerly hosted The Morning Show, a political radio talk show in New York on AM1600 WWRL.
