Late yesterday, ABC gave full-season orders to frosh series Once Upon a Time and Last Man Standing in addition to ordering five more scripts for Pan Am. Returning comedy Happy Endings also received a full-season order.
A third season is on tap for Showtime’s The Real L Word. The premium network ordered nine new episodes of the unscripted series that closely follows a group of high-profile lesbians. Production begins early next year in Los Angeles and also expands to New York. The Real L Word will feature celebrity guest appearances during the new season and a search for a new cast member will kick off soon in LA and NY. The Real L Word is created by Ilene Chaiken who also serves as executive producer along with Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves.
Sundance Channel brings back new episodes of its series Love Lust starting Monday at 8p. Each hour-long episode explores a particular guilty pleasure from its origins to its present pop culture status. The four food-focused upcoming episodes highlight Comfort Food, Chocolate, Holiday Feasts and Breakfast.
After battling anorexia in real life, actress Tracey Gold is helping other women become educated about the disease in Lifetime’s new unscripted series Starving Secrets with Tracey Gold, premiering December 2 at 10p following the network’s debut of America’s Most Wanted. The six-episode series is produced by GRB Entertainment. Correction: Lifetime ordered 20 new one-hour episodes of America’s Most Wanted premiering December 2 at 9p.
The next thriller to debut as part of BBC America’s Dramaville is the six-part miniseries, State of Play opening December 7 at 10p. Written by Paul Abbott (Shameless) and directed by David Yates (Harry Potter), the miniseries stars Bill Nighy, John Simm, David Morrissey, James McAvoy and Kelly Macdonald. BBC America’s weekly Dramaville airs on Wednesdays at 10p and is hosted by Idris Elba, star of Luther.
Australian actor Liam McIntyre makes his debut as Spartacus when STARZ premieres Spartacus: Vengeance on January 27 at 10p. The new second edition also features many returning stars from the first season including Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah, Manu Bennett, Dustin Clare, Nick E. Tarabay and Katrina Law.
As reported earlier this week, CNN officially revealed changes to its weekday morning lineup taking effect early in 2012. CNN will be replacing its American Morning program with two shows. From 5a to 7a Monday-Friday, Ashleigh Banfield, previously with MSNBC and ABC and Zoraida Sambolin, formerly with the NBC affiliate in Chicago will co-anchor. The 7a to 9a period will be helmed by anchor Soledad O’Brien. CNN said the first two-hour block will be more news-oriented while the second anchored by O’Brien will be talk-focused. O’Brien previously served as co-anchor of the network’s American Morning from 2003 to 2007 and has since hosted several In America primetime documentaries per year for the network. Under her new arrangement with CNN, O’Brien will continue to host the Black in America and Latino in America documentaries in 2012.
ABC Family firmed up its midseason schedule starting with the return of Pretty Little Liars on a new night beginning January 2 at 8p followed by The Lying Game with new episodes at 9p. The series premiere of new one-hour drama Jane By Design starring Erica Dasher and Andie MacDowell opens January 3 at 9p following the arrival of Switched at Birth with new eps at 8p landing on a new day and time. ABC Family’s other series The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Make It or Break It will be back on the network’s lineup with new eps in early spring 2012.
When the twelfth season of The Essentials debuts March 3 on TCM (Turner Classic Movies), network host Robert Osborne will be joined each week by Drew Barrymore as co-host. The duo will introduce classic films and offer commentary on the film’s cultural significance. The new season will open with Dinner at Eight, starring Barrymore’s grandfather John Barrymore and her great-uncle Lionel Barrymore. Other films in The Essentials’ pipeline include This Is Spinal Tap and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Musical instrument and equipment retailer, Guitar Center and DIRECTV announced seven all-new episodes of the music series, Guitar Center Sessions will premiere later this month. The series spotlights exclusive performances and intimate conversations with an artist conducted by Nic Harcourt. The series opens with a performance and conversation with Bush on November 19 at 9p in 2D hi-def on DIRECTV’s Audience Network and in 3D on DIRECTV’s n3D powered by Panasonic. Subsequent episodes feature Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Tom Morello, Seether, Plain White T’s, Carolina Liar and New Found Glory.
Media Arts & Design students at Drexel’s Antoinette Westphal College produced the half-hour sitcom Off Campus which debuts its first episode this Saturday at 1130p on WPSG-TV, The CW affiliate in Philadelphia. Off Campus is about the adventures and misadventures of five recent college grads. Episode two will air November 12 and episode three on November 19, both at 1130p. Then on November 26, encores of all three episodes will air at 1a.
TCM UK (Turner Classic Movies) owned by Turner Broadcasting acquired AMC’s one-hour drama series Hell on Wheels from Endemol Worldwide Distribution. Hell on Wheels is produced by Entertainment One (eOne) in association with Endemol USA and Nomadic Pictures for AMC. The series debuts this Sunday in the US on AMC and will debut on TCM UK in 2012. Hell on Wheels has also been acquired by the Sundance Channel for Portugal, Spain, Eastern and Central Europe along with AB Droits France, Antenna 3 Spain, TV Norge Norway and CNBC-e Turkey. Other deals will be announced in the future.
After launching this past September, Bounce TV is teaming with FOX Television Stations to premiere FTS’ first digital over the air network via FOX-owned MyNetworkTV digital channels in New York and Los Angeles. Bounce TV will offer the FTS stations its African American targeted programming including theatrical films, live sporting events, documentaries, specials, inspirational faith-based programs, off-net series, original programming and more. After adding these market additions, Bounce TV is in more than 70% of African American households in the US. Furthermore, Bounce TV also just added WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C. owned by Gannett.
British period drama Downton Abbey, from writer/creator Julian Fellowes, received a third season renewal from UK’s ITV. Eight episodes were ordered from UK’s Carnival, owned by NBCUniversal. Per ITV, this fall’s second season’s ratings in the UK were up by +21% over the first season. Season three will be set in 1920-21 and covers an 18-month period in the lives of the Crawley family and their servants. Downton Abbey’s producers have indicated the series will continue as long as there is a demand from the audience. Season two of Downton Abbey premieres on PBS in the US on January 8.
GMC approved its first-ever reality television series, Engagement Story from Big Fish Entertainment. The half-hour series is described as a heart-warming show following regular guys planning romantic surprise proposals for their sweethearts and watching as they pop the question. Engagement Story will be shot on location throughout the US and will premiere on GMC early next year. GMC will also launch a companion online engagement destination featuring a celebrity hosted version of Engagement Story that will allow people to share their proposal stories via video and social media. The online site will launch in early 2012.
HISTORY part of A+E Networks UK, a joint venture between A+E Networks and BSkyB commissioned the new series, Shaun Ryder On UFOs. The one-hour series with eight episodes is from production company Back2back. Ryder will explore the history of UFO sightings throughout the world including in his Manchester, UK, the US, the Mayan ruins of Peru and Chile and in Australia.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX won the A18-49 viewers Wednesday primetime with a 4.0/11, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. Right after its second season renewal announcement, FOX’s The X-Factor won the 8p hour at 3.8/11 followed by CBS’ Survivor: South Pacific at 3.6/10 with ABC’s comedies The Middle and Suburgatory in third place with an average of 3.1/9. ABC turned the tables during 9p as its sitcoms Modern Family and Happy Endings took over the #1 spot with an average of 4.6/12 and FOX’s The X-Factor slid to second place at 4.2/11 and CBS was #3 with Criminal Minds at 3.7/9. ABC’s frosh drama Revenge topped at 10p with a 3.0/8 and CBS’ CSI was next at 2.7/7 followed by NBC’s Law & Order: SVU at 2.0/5.

NBC Owned Television Stations named Meredith McGinn to the newly-minted position as VP/Multi-Station Local Programming. Meredith will supervise NBC’s Nonstop Network as well as developing national programming to add to new and existing local news and lifestyle content. She will further work to secure station partners in new markets. Meredith reports to Greg Scholl, President/Local Integrated Media, NBC Owned Television Stations. Furthermore, Marni Kupfer was elevated to VP/Lifestyle Production where she manages the production team for George to the Rescue, 1stLook and Open House. Marni will report to Meredith McGinn.
Former CNN executive Rena Golden joins The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) as Senior Director/Digital Content. Rena will manage coverage of all digital properties with the goal to increase audience and viewer engagement. Rena will further head and develop TWCC content and digital video teams.
