Cynopsis: Sports
11/02/12

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 2, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The leagues are stepping up to the plate to drive donations and help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. The NFL and the players’ union are donating $1 million to the American Red Cross in order to help recovery efforts in the Northeast following Sandy. In addition, the league and its network broadcasters will carry TV pregame and in-game messages to drive donations during this weekend’s games, starting with last night’s NFL Network’s Thursday night game.

The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association announced a commitment of $1 million toward the Red Cross and other organizations, including The Salvation Army, New York Cares and Jersey Cares, that have mobilized to assist the people and communities affected by the storm. The league and its broadcast partners will also air pregame and in-game messages to encourage fans to support relief efforts by the Red Cross.

On the Air

In the aftermath caused by the Hurricane, MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced a scheduling switch for the league’s playoffs this weekend, swapping the D.C. United/New York Red Bulls match on Saturday at 8p from NY to DC due to the damage in the northeast. The game will be carried by NBC Sports Network.

Meanwhile, TNT got its Knicks/Nets game back in the lineup and will exclusively televise the matchup on Monday, Nov. 26, at 7p from Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The game was originally slated to air last night but was postponed due to conditions in the New York area following Hurricane Sandy.

Former NBA head coach Stan Van Gundy landed a broadcast gig, inking a deal with the NBC Sports Group. The former NBA coach will initially join NBC Sports Network’s coverage of the inaugura lNavy-Marine Corps Classic as an analyst on Nov. 9 at 9p, and he will also serve as a regular contributor to NBC Sports Radio.

WWE CEO Vince McMahon announced in a quarterly conference call that the planned WWE Network will hit consumers as a premium subscription channel that may or may not include PPVs. No timetable was given for the launch.

The Breeders’ Cup Classic set to run live in primetime for the first time on NBC on Saturday at 8p from Santa Anita. Meanwhile, HRTV personalities Scott Hazelton and Richard Migliore offered their informed picks to Cynopsis Sports for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Scott Hazelton — 1) Mucho Macho Man, 2) Fort Larned, 3) Game On Dude
Richard Migliore — 1) Game On Dude, 2) Flat Out, 3) Mucho Macho Man

Two standout big college football games are on deck this weekend affecting potential champions. On Saturday, FOX Sports offers a primetime matchup between Pac-12 foes Oregon and USC. Gus Johnson, Charles Davis and reporter Julie Alexandria call the action from Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at 7p. CBS counters with the SEC ON CBS featuring top-ranked Alabama facing LSU at 8p. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson call the action from Baton Rouge with Tracy Wolfson serving as lead reporter.

The race goes on. ESPN presents the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, which is set to take place despite the challenges thrown in by Hurricane Sandy. This marks the first time in nearly two decades that the famed road race is being televised live to a national audience. ESPN2 will show the race nationally beginning at 9a. Production is set to include a total of 39 HD cameras, Google mapping applications, a Sports Science feature as well as social networking integration. SportsCenter anchors Hannah Storm and John Anderson will serve as host and play-by-play for the telecast.

BTN is offering fans two 60-minute basketball preview shows for both men’ and women’s basketball. The Big Ten Men’s Basketball Preview Show will air at 7p on Sunday, Nov. 4 and will be hosted by Dave Revsine and Jim Jackson. The Women’s Big Ten Basketball Preview Show runs at 8:30p on Nov. 5 and be hosted by Mike Hall and Stephanie White.

BTN also announced that the channel will offer extensive live coverage of Big Ten Wrestling for the 2012-13 season on television and online. The TV slate will include a pair of Monday night meets live in primetime; a late-season showdown between Penn State and Iowa, and live coverage of both the Midlands Championships and the Big Ten Wrestling Championships. In addition, 44 matches will also be streamed live online on the Big Ten Digital Network.

The Texas Rangers liked what they got from the broadcast booth last season and are ordering more. The MLB team announced that they will keep the prime television and radio crews that ended the 2012 season for the 2013 campaign, including Steve Busby and Tom Grieve on TV, Eric Nadel and Matt Hicks on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM and Eleno Ornelas for the Spanish radio broadcasts on 1540 AM ESPN Deportes. Busby and Hicks both agreed to new multi-year deals to stay with the team.

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic named Nicole Darin anchor and reporter for the network starting Monday. In her new position, she will serve as an anchor and reporter for Comcast SportsNet’s daily news program, Geico SportsNet Central, and will contribute to the network’s other sports news and entertainment programming. Darin joins the network from Comcast SportsNet Chicago, where she has served as a freelance anchor and reporter since September.
