Good morning. It’s Friday, November 1, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With another season now in the books, the 2013 World Series continued to give FOX a boost. The clinching game 6 drew a Series-high 11.3/18 national household rating and share, with 19.2 million viewers tuning in to see the Red Sox victory, according to Nielsen. That marks the highest rated baseball game since Game 7 of the 2011 World Series. Overall, the Series delivered an 8.9 average for the network with an average of 14.9 million viewers, up 17% in both rating and viewership over 2012.
“Our postseason coverage saw a 26% jump year-to-year, while ratings for the All-Star Game grew, we posted solid numbers at FOX Deportes and several of our regional sports networks had record-setting seasons and dominated prime time from April through September,” said FOX Sports President and COO Eric Shanks. “Next season will bring MLB to FOX Sports 1 and with it hours of studio coverage and original programs.”
According to TiVo, the top five moments of the 2013 World Series, based on its internal data were:
- 1. Game 3: 12:04a The final play of game 3 that saw the third base umpire signal obstruction, allowing Craig to score the winning run.
- 2. Game 4: 10:22p Jonny Gomes, who wasn’t even scheduled to start the game but went in for an ailing Victorino, hits a three run homer off Maness to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the 6th.
- 3. Game 6: 9:08p In the third inning with two outs and the bases loaded, Victorino doubles to deep left and Boston takes a 2-0 lead.
- 4. Game 2: 9:58p Down by one run in the bottom of the 6th, with a full count, Ortiz hits a towering two run homer to left scoring, what would end up being the only runs for the Red Sox in game 2.
- 5. Game 2: 10:23p A sacrifice fly by Carpenter with the bases loaded scores two for the Cardinals on a throwing error by the pitcher Breslow.
Meanwhile, with the offseason officially underway, MLB Network announced that Ron Darling will be joining its on-air talent roster as an offseason analyst. Darling will appear across MLB Network’s offseason studio programming, which begins Monday, November 4, and make his MLB Network debut live on MLB Tonight on November 4 at 6p.
NBC Sports Group revealed its college basketball plans for NBCSN this season, with more than 60 college basketball games on deck, including over 40 regular-season matchups, three holiday tournaments featuring Big East, Big Ten and ACC schools, and coverage of two conference tournaments. Regular season games will include 43 regular-season games across the A-10, CAA and Ivy League, tournaments Battle 4 Atlantis, Barclays Center classic and Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic. Conference tournament action will include the A-10 Championship Quarterfinals and the CAA Conference Semifinals and Championship Game. The action gets underway with Temple/Towson on Nov. 14 at 7:30p.
Tennis Channel is unveiling a new studio set this month in conjunction with its coverage of the men’s year-end championships Nov. 4-11 and Davis Cup Finals Nov. 15-17. The new set will serve as the base for the introduction of studio-based, live-coverage lead-in and wrap-up shows and also serve as the new home of Court Report, the network’s series of nightly tennis news updates. The set includes four premium rear-projection screens and a state-of-the-art lighting system. The set was designed by Las Vegas-based Scenic Technologies, which also created Tennis Channel’s Wimbledon stage at the All England Lawn Tennis Association. The new set will first appear on air next Monday, Nov. 4, during Tennis Channel’s live, weeklong coverage of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.
CBS Sports Network hits the weekend with a tripleheader on Saturday, beginning with Southern Miss/Marshall at 12:30p. Ben Holden and Tom Bradley announce. At 4p, the channel offers Hawaii/Utah State with Dave Ryan and Adam Archuleta on the microphone. Finally, the day closes out with Boise State/Colorado State at 8p. Andrew Catalon and Aaron Taylor call the action.
Our friends at HRTV offered up their picks for Saturday’s $5 Million Breeders’ Cup Classic with on-air talent delivering their forecasts.

GoDaddy is changing its offense for the Super Bowl in February, announcing that the brand will offer a commercial in the game for the 10th year-in-a-row via two thirty-second spots, one in each half of the game. However, GoDaddy announced that it was ending its risque commercial theme in lieu of a “new era.” The new Super Bowl spots are being produced by Deutsch New York, with at least one of the spots featuring Danica Patrick.
Raycom Media signed on as title sponsor for the 2014 Camellia Bowl, which will be played in December next year. The game, which is owned by ESPN, will pit teams from the MAC and Sun Belt in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
The NCAA is getting an overhaul, at least online. The organization and Turner Sports launched a newly designed NCAA.com this week with “an adaptive design, which provides users an optimal viewing experience across all devices — desktop, tablet and mobile.” The site also has expanded content offering with the new NCAA Championships Central, which serves as a hub for live video, highlights, brackets, scores and related content for all 89 NCAA championships. For the 2012-13 academic year, NCAA.com averaged 5.1 million unique visitors per month, an increase of 36% from the previous year.
