CBS is indeed canceling its drama series Medium. Earlier this week, series star Patricia Arquette said the show was finished and yesterday the series creator Glenn Gordon Caron also confirmed its demise. Medium is to date averaging 7.1 million viewers.

Yesterday, Cablevision Systems Corp. said it is considering the idea of spinning off its Rainbow Media entertainment group, comprised of cable networks AMC, We tv, IFC and Sundance Channel. As a result of this news, Cablevision’s stock shares bumped up as high as 10% on Wall Street yesterday. Controlled by the Dolan family, Cablevision has yearned to simplify its holdings in an attempt to take the company private. If this move takes place, Cablevision has targeted mid-2011 for the spinoff.

FOX Sports forged a deal with the Big Ten Conference to become the official broadcast partner of the Big Ten Football Championship Games starting next year through 2016. The first Big Ten Football Championship Game is slated to air in primetime on December 3, 2011 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The winning team of the Big Ten Conference will have the opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl Game or Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game.

FOX’s American Idol executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe said the show’s finalists will take on new challenges as the series launches a new season in January, cites TVGuide.com. The new tests involve the contestants making a music video, promoting themselves and working with a band and dancers for an awards show-style performance. Lythgoe also said the finalists would start with the top 12 contestants instead of an elimination round going from 24 to 12 finalists.

Media Rating Council (MRC) has dropped its accreditation of Nielsen measurement in the 154 diary-only markets, making it effective back to 2009. This move affects the smaller TV markets nationally and some stations in these markets are concerned about how the lack of a MRC audit will affect their advertising sales. MRC is an independent group that makes sure audience measurement companies perform at a certain standard. People involved closely with the situation say MRC pulled its accreditation due to Nielsen’s recruiting efforts in diary markets. Since more people have dropped their land line phones in favor of cell phones, Nielsen has gone to an address-based recruiting method in its diary-only markets as opposed to the old way of selecting diarists by their phone numbers. The new method resulted in low sample sizes in two out of four quarters in 2009. An MRC spokesperson would not verify if this was the reason behind their decision, saying the information was only for MRC members. MRC, however, does support Nielsen’s new address-based sampling method. Nielsen says it has corrected the problem and has requested a new MRC audit and expects to be accredited for these markets again soon. MRC also said it “looks forward to continuing to work with Nielsen to be able to reinstate accreditation of the NSI-Diary-Only markets in the future.”

The 2010 Alma Awards will not be broadcast on ABC this year, or on any other network. The Alma Awards honor positive portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment industry and has aired on ABC each fall for the last several years. Delia de la Vara, a producer of the awards show and the VP of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) said the Alma Awards will likely return in 2011 on a different network. “We’re working toward a 2011 fall broadcast of the show during Hispanic Heritage Month,” said de la Vara. “That’s the right time to showcase the stories about the contributions that Latinos are making in television, film, music and sports.”

VH1 opens a second season of Basketball Wives on December 12 at 9p, expanding the series to hour-long episodes. The new season with 10 episodes, travels to Miami to catch up with the basketball wives and girlfriends from season one along with four new women. Shed Media produces the series.

In January DIRECTV will launch the first three seasons of the Glenn Close-starring drama Damages as a precursor to the premiere of an all-new fourth season scheduled to open next summer on DIRECTV. On January 5, DIRECTV’s The 101 Channel will premiere season one followed by season two on April 6 and season three on May 25. The first three seasons of Damages aired on FX and in July DIRECTV gained exclusive rights to the fourth and fifth seasons of the drama produced by Sony Pictures Television.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

GSN (Game Show Network) has tapped comedian/game show host Drew Carey to create and host an original primetime strip show for the network. The 40-episode, untitled show is scheduled to bow in spring 2011, airing weeknights. Carey will headline the half-hour show featuring his actor/comedian friends along with surprise guests who will perform improvised sketch comedy using audience participation. The show will be shot in January and February at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in front of a live audience. Joe Roth, founder of Revolution Studios and Carey will serve as producers.

VH1 picked up a new 10-episode reality series titled Mob Wives from The Weinstein Co. and Ben Silverman’s company Electus. VH1 gave the project a straight to series order and production will begin right after Thanksgiving. Mob Wives follows four women who struggle to resurrect their lives after being involved with husband or fathers who are doing prison time for mob-related crimes. Jennifer Graziano of JustJenn Productions created the series and will be the show’s executive producer. JustJenn Productions has an exclusive deal with The Weinstein Co. to create scripted and reality programming. Mob Wives is expected to premiere in March 2011.

Showtime added Claire Danes to star in its new one-hour drama pilot Homeland executive produced by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, who were previously involved with FOX’s 24. Homeland, produced by FOX 21, is loosely based on an Israeli television series Prisoners of War. Casting for the lead male role will be announced in the near future and production on the pilot will commence in January. The plot, written by Gordon, Gansa and Gideon Raff, is about an American soldier taken prisoner during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Thought dead, the soldier miraculously returns to the US after years in captivity. Danes will play Carrie Anderson, an ambitious CIA officer with her own psychological demons who thinks the soldier, now considered a national hero, is connected to Al Qaeda.

Angela Bassett landed a starring role on ABC’s new one-hour cop drama One Police Plaza that is currently in development from executive producer Mark Gordon (Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy). If this project becomes a full-fledged series, Bassett will portray the first-ever female New York police commissioner. Gordon is executive producing along with his production partner Deb Spera.

Harry Shum Jr. will return as a regular cast member on FOX’s Glee for next season, cites EW.
