~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Surviving elimination, two more editions are on tap for CBS’ Survivor which will air during the 2012-2013 season.  These two upcoming cycles will mark the 25th and 26th editions of television’s longest-running reality competition series.  Jeff Probst will continue as host and executive producer for all three upcoming editions.  Currently in its 23rd cycle, Survivor: South Pacific is averaging 12.27 million viewers and a 3.8/11 rating/share among A18-49.  The 24th edition of Survivor opens February 15 at 8p.  Survivor is produced by SEG, Inc.

Series highlights from the Winter/Spring 2012 PBS schedule include:

  • Season two of Downton Abbey opens January 8 at 9p with the seven-week miniseries set during World War I.
  • American Experience serves up new and encore episodes focused on the American West on Tuesdays starting with the premiere of Billy the Kid on January 10 and Custer’s Last Stand on January 17, airing at 8p.
  • Independent Lens is back starting January 12 at 9p with a five-part series titled Have You Heard From Johannesburg.
  • PBS offers a new multi-part science series on Wednesdays called Inside Nature’s Giants beginning January 18 at 10p.
  • Season two of Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook returns with three episodes on February 3 at 9p. 
  • Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is back with a new 10-part series beginning March 25 at 8p.  The new collection of episodes examine the genealogy and genetics of famous Americans including Kevin Bacon, Tyra Banks, Robert Downey, Jr., Sanjay Gupta, John Legend, Martha Stewart, Barbara Walters and Rick Warren among others.
  • In the spring, MASTERPIECE honors Charles Dickens with the two-part MASTERPIECE/BBC co-production of Great Expectations on Sundays, April 1 and 8 at 9p as well as a production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood on April 15 at 9p.
  • Masterpiece Mystery! is back with Sherlock, Series 2 premiering May 6 at 9p continuing through May 20.

Joy Behar will no longer pull double duty as host of two shows as her HLN primetime program The Joy Behar Show will end after airing two years.  The network has decided to not continue the primetime show though taping will continue through mid-December.  Following its finale, another HLN show will move into the 10p slot.  A new programming lineup will be announced by HLN soon.  Behar will continue as host on ABC’s The View.

Comedy documentary series Inside Comedy is set to premiere on Showtime January 26 at 10p.  The series is from Curb Your Enthusiasm’s David Steinberg and Steve Carell.  The half-hour 10-episode series features Steinberg interviewing top comedians such as Jerry Seinfeld, Mel Brooks, Don Rickles, Jonathan Winters and Ellen DeGeneres among others. 

Season two of Stalked: Someone’s Watching, a series that sheds light on the crime of stalking, debuts December 5 at 1030p on Investigation Discovery.  The series profiles stalking victims and delves into the psychology of the people who commit these crimes.  Investigation Discovery ordered sixteen episodes for the sophomore season produced by Atlas Media Corporation.

Early in the New Year, ABC Family kicks off new series Jane By Design on January 3 at 9p.  The one-hour original drama is about Jane Quimby, an eccentric teen with a hip fashion sense who lands a job at a top fashion house when they mistake her for an adult.  Jane must then juggle high school and a job as an assistant to a high-powered fashion executive.  The series stars newcomer Erica Dasher in the title role as well as David Clayton Rogers, Nicholas Roux, Rowly Dennis, India De Beaufort, Meagan Tandy, Matthew Atkinson and Andie MacDowell playing Jane’s demanding boss. 

Two shows on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network received additional episode orders.  The network gave 8 additional eps to the docu-series Our America with Lisa Ling taking the second season to 16 total eps.  Frosh docu-series Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s received 10 additional eps taking its first season up to 18 total eps.  Airing on Sundays at 10p, Our America with Lisa Ling averages a 0.36 rating with W25-54 and 405,000 total viewers while new series Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s airing on Saturdays at 9p averages a 0.38 rating with W25-54 and 388,000 total viewers.  The new episodes of Our America with Lisa Ling will cover topics such as pageant kids, the lifestyle of swingers among others and are presently in production to air next spring.  Additional episodes of Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s will commence production in December to also air in the spring.

Tuesday’s premiere of new original series MTV2’s Guy Code on MTV2 became the network’s most-watched original series debut ever among P12-34 with a 0.34 rating in the demo.  The opening episode also delivered a 0.43 rating with M12-34.

Independent Boston-based MMB was selected as the new creative advertising agency of record for Gulf States Toyota (GST).  MMB will be involved in developing and executing advertising and marketing campaigns for GST and its dealers.  GST also has selected Zenith Media to work in tandem with MMB as GST’s media agency of record.  Zenith will plan and buy all media encompassing traditional and digital outlets for GST in a five-state area. Zenith Media is a division of ZenithOptimedia, a member of Publicis Groupe, S.A.

Ricki Lake goes from ABC’s Dancing with the Stars to hosting another talk show as The Ricki Lake Show has been cleared in more than 50% of the US for a September 2012 debut.  The new syndicated talk show, distributed by Twentieth Television, Inc. and produced by Monet Lane Productions was sold to the FOX Television Stations and Tribune Broadcasting stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas.  Other station groups clearing the talk show include Sinclair, Local TV, Post Newsweek, Fisher, Granite, New Vision, Journal, Citadel, Quincy, Titan, Sun Broadcasting and Gray.  Specific stations airing The Ricki Lake Show include FOX Television Stations’ KTTV/Los Angeles, WFLD/Chicago, WFXT/Boston; Tribune’s WPIX/New York, KDAF/Dallas, KCPQ/Seattle, KTXL, Sacramento, WXIN-WTTV/Indianapolis, WTIC/Hartford, WPMT/Harrisburg, WXMI/Grand Rapids; Local TV’s KDVR/Denver, WJW/Cleveland, KTVI-KPLR/St. Louis, WDAF/Kansas City, WITI/Milwaukee, WHO/Des Moines; Sinclair’s KUTV/Salt Lake City, WSYX/Columbus, WLOS/Greenville-Spartanburg, WXLV/Greensboro, KEYE/Austin, WEAR/Mobile-Pensacola, WKEF/Dayton, WCHS/Charleston-Huntington, WICS/Champaign, KGAN/Cedar Rapids; Post Newsweek’s KPRC/Houston; Granite’s WKBW/Buffalo; and Fisher’s KATU/Portland.

Debmar-Mercury in partnership with producer ITV Studios America announced The Jeremy Kyle Show has been renewed for the 2012-2013 season (the show’s sophomore season) in more than 50% of the US.  Renewal clearances include the FOX stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, D.C. and Houston.  The company also said the talk show has also been renewed on stations owned by Sinclair.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Classic TV show The Munsters will make a comeback on NBC as the network ordered a pilot from Bryan Fuller.  The new version will morph into an hour-long series exploring how the monster house came into being and will have a darker feel and be less campy than the original half-hour sitcom. 

Writer Melissa Rosenberg, known for her work on the Twilight Saga films has a second drama project on the docket for ABC.  Rosenberg is set to adapt Endemol’s Dutch drama Penoza, centered on an assassinated criminal’s widow who is forced to take over her dead husband’s shady role in a bid to keep her family safe.  Rosenberg will write the pilot and also serve as showrunner and executive producer along with Alon Aranya and Howard Klein.  Endemol’s Penoza is currently in production on a second season in the Netherlands airing on KRO.  Rosenberg’s other project at ABC is Marvel’s AKA Jessica Jones with ABC Studios as well as the murder-mystery drama Afterthought in the pipeline at NBC.

Former Saturday Night Live cast member, Nora Dunn is joining ABC’s upcoming new sitcom Don’t Trust the B—– in Apartment 23, reports EW.  Dunn will play Joyce Barron, a tough financial businesswoman who hires series star Dreama Walker’s character June as her intern.  ABC has not announced its midseason schedule yet though this series is expected to be part of the lineup.

Funny woman Kristen Schaal, who is a contributor on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, has signed to guest star in multiple episodes on NBC’s 30 Rock, per THR.  Details on her role have not been revealed.  30 Rock returns to NBC’s lineup with a sixth season on January 12 at 8p.

~ RATINGS ~

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX led Wednesday with a 3.9/10 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, FOX opened primetime a winner with The X-Factor at 3.7/11 and Survivor: South Pacific on CBS was next at 3.3/9 and ABC’s comedies The Middle and Suburgatory averaged a 3.0/9 in third place.  ABC moved up the ranks to win the 9p hour with Modern Family and Happy Endings at an average of 4.4/11 while ratings for the second half of The X-Factor on FOX ticked up to a 4.1/11 which placed second and CBS’ Criminal Minds came in third at 3.7/9.  Then at 10p, ABC’s Revenge and CBS’ CSI tied for #1 at 2.6/7 each with Univision’s La Fuerza del Destino at #2 with a 2.0/5 and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU was a close third position at 1.9/5.

Bruce Rosenblum was elected Chairman/CEO by the Board of Governors for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.  Bruce was elected to a two-year term beginning January 2012.  Bruce is currently the President of Warner Bros. Television Group.  The Board of Governors also elected the following officers: Vice Chair to Kevin Hamburger, the outgoing Treasurer and Senior Supervising Producer of CBS’ The Talk; Second Vice Chair to Frank Scherma, current Governor Commercials Peer Group, current Creative Arts Awards Show Committee Vice Chair, President @radical.media; Secretary to Marcelino Ford, incumbent Secretary, current Bylaws Committee Vice Chair, GM/Interactive Content and Advanced Advertising Development for Intel’s Media Group; and Treasurer to Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg, current Governor Production Executives, current Primetime Awards Committee Co-Chair.

Zodiak Active, the worldwide digital and branded content unit of Zodiak Media Group named Robert Marsh as MD of its UK Operations.  Previously, Robert worked for talkbackTHAMES where he was Head/Digital. 

Former Univision executive Rosy Marin joins Telemundo Media as SVP/Regional Ad Sales.  Based in Los Angeles, Rosy will manage network sales for all Telemundo Media regional offices in Los Angeles, Orange County, Chicago and Dallas.  She will report to Dan Lovinger, EVP/Advertising Sales and Integrated Marketing, Telemundo Media.

Jon Steinlauf received a promotion to EVP/Sales and Marketing with Scripps Networks Interactive.  Jon heads the ad sales and integrated marketing teams and related activities for Scripps’ lifestyle media brands including HGTV, DIY Network, Food Network, Cooking Channel, Travel Channel and Great American Country (GAC). 

Univision Communications Inc. hired Jason E. Newman as VP/Sports Sales and Rick Resnick as VP/Sports Marketing.  In their new positions, Jason and Rick will offer clients advertising and marketing solutions utilizing Univision’s roster of sports properties across all platforms.  Rick and Jason will both be based in New York, reporting to Carlos Deschapelles, SVP/Univision Sports Sales.
