Good morning. It’s Friday, November 15, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Good news for FOX. FOX Sports 1 nabbed its most-watched week ever for the week ending Nov. 10, marking highs in both prime time and total day Nielsen numbers. Viewership was bolstered by a network record audience for Oklahoma/Baylor, as well as major UFC and NASCAR events in the schedule. Overall, the channel averaged 630,000 viewers in prime time and 157,000 viewers total day last week surpassing its previous best week from Aug. 26-Sept. 1. That number also beats predecessor SPEED’s fourth quarter 2012 averages by 237% in prime and 60% in total day. Oklahoma vs. Baylor on Thursday tallied 2.1 million viewers to rank as the most-watched telecast ever.
On the Air
Univision reports that its broadcast of the match between Mexico and New Zealand on Wednesday delivered an average of 1.9 million Adults 18-49 and reached 5.6 million viewers who tuned in to all or part of the FIFA World Cup qualifier, according to Fast National numbers. On Univision’s digital platforms, the live stream ranked as the largest single game event since the 2010 FIFA World Cup, delivering nearly 650K live streams across all platforms.
A PricewaterhouseCoopers new study on the sports industry projects that the value of sports media rights will continue to climb at 7.7% at a compound annual growth rate for the next four years. The report estimates that value to hit $17.1 billion by 2017. On the sponsorship front, advertising will also rise, jumping 6% on a compounded annual rate for the next four years to $17.7 billion.
NBC Sports has upgraded its coverage of the 2014 NHL Stadium Series matchup between the Blackhawks and Penguins from Soldier Field to the mother ship, where it will now air on NBC at 8p on Saturday, March 1, 2014. The game was originally slated to run on NBCSN. This marks the first time since NBC re-acquired NHL rights in 2006 that a regular-season game has been scheduled for primetime on NBC, according to the network. (Note: the 2011 NHL Winter Classic aired in primetime because weather prevented the game from being played at its regularly-scheduled time in the afternoon.)
Comedy site Funny or Die is tackling sports in its first-ever documentary series. Multiple reports state that Discovery Channel has picked up the show, which will feature strength and conditioning coach Mike Barwis training with a different pro athlete in each episode. The series is expected to run in 2014.
HBO reports that the upcoming episode of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on Tuesday at 10p will feature a hard look at the various controversies surrounding the 2014 Winter Games with a “behind-the-scenes look at the preparations and speaks to individuals who allege there are massive corruption schemes tied to these Games.”
CBS Sports Network’s Executive Vice President of Distribution Bob Rose has departed the company, officials confirmed. Under Rose’s watch, the channel grew from 11 million subs to 53 million.
ESPN Films will debut a new 30 for 30 on Saturday, December 14, at 9p on ESPN after the Heisman Trophy Presentation. The edition, dubbed Youngstown Boys, “explores class and power dynamics in college sports through the parallel, interconnected journeys of one-time dynamic running back Maurice Clarett and former elite head coach Jim Tressel.”
Weekend notes:
Phil Mickelson makes his Morning Drive in-studio debut this morning at 9a on Golf Channel. The famed golfer will chat with Gary Williams about his 2013 season including his Open Championship victory and will look ahead to 2014.
BTN debuts its first-ever documentary Tiebreaker at 7p on Saturday, following a pair of college football games on the network. The action begins at noon with Purdue/Penn State followed by Michigan/Northwestern at 3:30p. The special examines the aftermath of the controversial decision to send Ohio State to the Rose Bowl after the 1973 Ohio State-Michigan football game, which ended in a 10-10 tie as well as a tied conference record.
NBC Sports Group’s Fight Night series returns Saturday at 2:30p on NBC with a two-bout card headlined by heavyweights Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov against Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson. Play-by-play announcer Kenny Rice handles microphone duties with analyst B.J. Flores and reporter Chris Mannix.
MLB 2013: Unwritten Rules will hit MLB Network on Saturday at 9p with a look at the foundation of baseball’s unwritten rules. Bob Costas, Jim Kaat, Harold Reynolds and Tom Verducci discuss retaliation, on-field celebrations, bunting during a no-hitter, stealing signs and how these rules have changed in the last 50 years.
On Sunday, CBS carries the 24th annual Courage in Sports, a one-hour special spotlighting individuals who bested “monumental challenges to achieve greatness in the world of sports.” The one-hour special features stories that include a look at five survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing; a piece on Bikes over Baghdad in which BMX riders entertain troops across the world; a profile on Oklahoma State football player, Josh Stewart; and a report on Connor Stroud, a young boy who has not let a birth defect get in the way of tennis.
