Good morning! It’s Friday November 11, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Former HBO president Ross Greenburg has quickly landed a two-fer, locking down deals with both NBC Sports Group as well as the NHL to produce new series for the two organizations. Greenburg, who founded Ross Greenburg Productions earlier this year after a 33-year career at HBO, will produce the new Bob Costas series on the NBC Sports Network which will include a new monthly interview program and live Town Hall series. He will also produce documentaries for the channel, as well as Golf Channel and NBC. His first documentary, for NBC Sports Network, dubbed Cold War on Ice: Summit Series ’72 will debut at 4:30p on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, the same day the channel is being re-branded from VERSUS.
He will also team with the National Hockey League to form NHL Original Productions, an initiative that will create original, long- and short-form hockey programming for NBC Sports and the League’s media assets, beginning later this season. The launch marks the latest collaboration between the NHL and Greenburg with the duo previously working together on HBOs’: Broad Street Bullies and 24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic. NHL Original Productions also will develop original content for use by the League’s media platforms (NHL Network and NHL.com) as well as national and regional rightsholders.
FX’s foray into college football is starting to gain momentum, after the channel stumbled in its first three weeks of programming with an average of 735,000 viewers per telecast for its games. Since then, college football has gone on to average 1.149 million viewers per telecast, for a 56% spike over the first three weeks. Saturday’s matchup between Texas Tech and Texas pulled a 0.8/2 with 1.1 million viewers for a 33% climb over the season-to-date average of 0.6/1.
For the fourth straight year, ESPN showcasing the start of college basketball season with a marathon of games and extensive coverage across its platforms. The College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon Presented by Disney Parks is set for Tuesday, Nov. 15, will include 21 live contests; 19 men’s and two women’s in a 25 hour span across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3. Tip-off begins at midnight with Washington State/Gonzaga on ESPN and ESPN3 and will wrap up with the NIT Season Tip-Off game from Stanford at 11p on ESPNU.
The newly-formed Hockey East Association continues to add TV deals to its resume, inked a four-year TV rights agreement with NESN through the 2014/15 season. At least 16 games per season will run, with four games airing immediately after the channel’s Bruins Saturday afternoon games with all ten Hockey East teams will appear on the channel. Coverage begins on Saturday, Jan. 7 with a doubleheader of outdoor games at Fenway Park at 4p.
MLS commissioner Don Garber has confirmed to reporters that the league will play an unbalanced, 34-game schedule in the 2012 season, according to Goal.com. With expansion team Montreal Impact entering the league in the new season, the league was faced with the choice of adding more games that will allow each team to square off against every other team in the league once, or shifting to an unbalanced schedule and keeping the season at 34 games. Garber also said that the club with the most points could host the MLS Cup in 2012 and shift away from neutral site games.
The Izod IndyCar Series announced that the organization will race in China for the first time in 2012, with a street circuit in the seaport city of Qingdao to replace its traditional trip to Japan. The race will be held on Aug. 19.
With the finale of 24/7 Pacquiao/Marquez as well as the weigh-in for the fight on HBO tonight, the network hits the weekend with what could by the company’s most promoted fight in history, utilizing CNN, TBS, and other company assets to build awareness for the bout.
CBS Sports Network is set to tip off its ninth season of live college basketball coverage today with the All Military Classic, a doubleheader featuring four of the nation’s military academies. Games begin at 9:30p with an Army/Air Force game, followed by Citadel/VMI at midnight. Roger Twibell and analyst Pete Gillen handle microphone duties.
Sports and entertainment company Grand Prix Entertainment as appointed for CBS Sports president Neal Pilson as a special senior advisor to the organization who will be responsible for the distribution of Grand Prix’s global television rights for professional rugby sevens. In this role, he will oversee Grand Prix’s network, cable and pay-per-view rights attached to a soon-to-be-announced slate of events in partnership with USA Rugby.
With the firing of Joe Paterno and the rough fallout on the Penn St. campus, ESPN is dedicating Sunday’s entire episode of Outside the Lines to the school. Host Bob Ley will interview key figures during the program, with the latest from State College, Pa.
The one and only Billy Crystal (who just announced that he will once again return to host the Oscars) will visit MLB Network’s Studio 42 with Bob Costas on Monday, November 14 at 9p to discuss Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and the tenth anniversary of his film about their famed home run chase, “61*.” Crystal talks with Costas about his longtime friendship with Mantle, as well as Mantle’s battle with alcoholism, Mantle’s feelings about his baseball career, and the making of the film.
Comcast Media Center in Denver is now the provider for channel origination and transmission services for the 24-hour NHL Network. NHL Network’s new facility at the CMC will use the center to support the network’s HD and SD broadcasts, including multiple live events with a new control room that features advanced graphics and live ticker capabilities.
GLR Networks announced its coverage of the Mexican 1st Division Soccer league Torneo Apertura 2011 playoffs, which will begin next week. The games will begin on Nov. 19 at 6:30p with Pachuca/Tigres.
The 3rd Annual All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival kicks off today at the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood, California where 18 countries, 64 films, and over a dozen world premieres will be represented at the event. The jury and judges include ESPN Sideline Reporter Holly Rowe, ESPN Color Commentators Dan Dakich and Rebecca Lobo, and Los Angeles Times Sports Columnist Chris Erskine.
MDC Partners and race car team sponsor Michael Andretti have formed a new sports marketing and sponsorship company, according to Mediapost. The venture will be based in Indianapolis with offices across the US and Canada and will focus on “sponsorship activation and management, deal structuring, public relations strategy, proprietary data tracking, marketing consultation, digital solutions and analytics.” Andretti will serve as the chairman and CEO of the new company.
Bonnier Corp. and the UFC entered a deal that will allow Bonnier to begin producing the promotion’s official magazine. Launched in 2009, UFC Magazine will see its first issue published by Bonnier this winter. UFC Magazine will continue to be led by Editor-in-Chief Seth Kelly and Publisher Larry Menkes.
Tiger Woods inked a deal with sports nutrition company Fuse Science, finally handing Woods with an endorsement for his golf bag, according to the AP. Woods will not display the company on his bag until the Chevron World Challenge beginning Dec. 1 in California.
UFC President Dana White announced that the company is ending Facebook streams of preliminary bouts to its cards. Although the streams have been popular, all fights will now run on one of the FOX platforms as part of the pair’s new deal.
The Main Event
