Good morning. It’s Friday, November 10, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Veteran CBS newsman Ed Bradley died yesterday morning from complications of chronic lymphatic leukemia at the age of 65. Bradley spent 26 seasons as correspondent for 60 Minutes, joining the news program in the 1981-82 season. He also anchored and reported hour-long specials for the network. During his career he won 19 Emmy awards and recently was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
Ed Bradley began his career as a stringer in Paris for CBS News in 1971, followed by Saigon bureau during the Vietnam War (including being wounded in Cambodia), then reporting from the White House in the late 1970s, anchoring CBS Sunday Night News from 1976 to 1981, followed by serving as a correspondent for CBS Reports and Street Stories and ultimately with 60 Minutes in 1981.
In a statement yesterday, President Bush said Ed “produced distinctive investigative reports that inspired action and cemented his reputation as one of the most accomplished journalists of our time.”
BET Networks’ Chairman/CEO Debra Lee also said the following about the television journalist: “Ed Bradley represented a special generation of African-American journalists one who proudly, but somewhat quietly, carried the mantle of pioneer. He was the consummate professional whose most probing and controversial questions still represented the very best in journalist ethics and news judgment. Ed was a favorite of our BET News division. He often lent his voice and expertise to help us deliver the news from an African-American perspective. We will miss him.”
In an interview of Bradley, he once said, “if I arrive at the Pearly Gates and St. Peter said what have you done to deserve entry, I’d just say ‘did you see my Lena Horne story?’ “
NBC has ordered up a full season of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Surprised? This past Monday night, the show delivered 7.7 million viewers, finishing third in the time period. While it may not have a multitude of viewers, it does have a high quality viewer – a preponderance of college educated, affluent viewers with an annual income exceeding $75k. Whether or not the show will remain on Monday nights at 10p following Heroes, is still unknown. A new midseason schedule is due out from the network next week. Only two other freshman series still airing on NBC have not received their orders for a full season – Friday Night Lights and sitcom 30 Rock. Both have received additional script orders.
The CW has ordered three more scripts for two series – Veronica Mars and One Tree Hill, both in their sophomore seasons.
Nielsen has released new DVR findings from the week of September 25. Among DVR households, 76% of all A18-49 viewers who watch recorded broadcast primetime shows, play them back within two days and 84% play them back in three days. Also among A18-49, 85% viewed syndicated shows within two days and by the third day, 90% watched primetime cable shows and 91% viewed time-shifted syndicated programs.
MTV will introduce its latest series Twentyfourseven on December 6 at 1030p, about seven real-life male friends who work hard and dream of making it big in Hollywood. Several multi-platform opportunities will surround the new show, including iTunes, iFilm and MTV.com will be the online destination for Twentyfourseven information. Later, additional content about the guys will be featured on After Hours through the web site.
As of November 13, ABC’s early morning newscast World News This Morning will undergo a name change to America This Morning. The 30-minute broadcast, which covers breaking world and domestic news stories, is divided into timed segments which allow the ABC affiliates to insert their news into the program and it is updated for time zones across the US.
Court TV’s premiere episode of Most Shocking, which aired Wednesday night at 8-9p delivered 727,000 A18-49 viewers.
Sundance Channel will air Positive Voices, the mini-documentary from Cable Positive, the cable and telecommunications AIDS action non-profit organization, on November 11 at 615p and again on World AIDS Day, December 1 at 11:15p. The 12-minute documentary, produced in association with Kismet Films, relates the workplace discrimination action against Matthew Cusick, an HIV-positive member of Cirque du Soleil.
For those fans of CBS’ Smith, the remaining four original episodes will be streamed on the network’s broadband channel, innertube beginning this week. Available for four weeks, the episodes can be viewed for free and contain minimal commercials. The first three episodes which aired on the network can also be viewed online. In addition, Warner Bros. Television is making all seven Smith episodes available for download via AOL, Amazon and the iTunes Store. For a briefing on how the producers intended to resolve the serialized drama, a synopsis is posted on the series’ web site at CBS.com.
NBC Universal has launched a new comedy broadband channel DotComedy (www.dotcomedy.com) which is now live and updated daily. Content will include original, web-exclusive material, which will debut by the end of this year, as well as NBC’s late-night shows such as the first ten years of Late Night with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Sitcoms will include the HBO original series Dream On and other vintage series like Leave It To Beaver, The Munsters and Coach. DotComedy will also be a place where viewers can showcase their own comedic talent with user-generated content features.
Note to self: Clear the calendar on the morning of November 15 at 11:30a, this is too cool to miss – the first-ever live hi-def downlink from the International Space Station on Discovery HD. Using the Sony HD 750A camera the Space Shuttle Atlantis will transmit the clearest look at Earth yet. The Discovery HD Theater is available via digital cable and through satellite TV providers. Huh. Better sign up for satellite TV or get me some digital cable. Do I need an HD set too? Maybe not.
Production has begun on a new drama series for The N called The Best Years, produced by Blueprint Ent in association with CanWest MediaWorks. The show is scheduled to premiere on The N next summer.
Fox has a new project in the works called Them, about a sleeper cell of aliens who look and act like humans, based on the novel Six by Michael Oeming and Daniel Berman, per Variety. The project is being produced by Circle of Confusion and CBS Paramount Network Television.
NBC has a new project from Fremantle North America in the works – a comedy called The IT Crowd, a makeover of the UK series of the same name. NBC Universal Television studio and Fremantle will co-produce the U.S. version, which focuses on the oft unappreciated and sometimes nerdy IT workers.
CBS has added Illeana Douglas as a recurring character in the drama series Shark. She will play a smart defense attorney, who enjoys going head to head with Shark.
HGTV has ordered six episodes of The Duchess from September Films, which chronicles the aristocratic lives of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, according to C21. It is expected to air on HGTV in the second half of 2007.
Military Channel and Discovery Networks International has ordered a new series called Sea Battles, produced by KPI. Each episode investigates one key naval conflict around the globe by forensically investigating its untouched underwater graveyard and using that investigation to unlock and recreate the strategy of each sea battle. The series recreates each battle using CGI and information gained from exploring the underwater battlefield. KPI will be shooting the series around the world in the Atlantic, Pacific, The Philippine Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
ReelzChannel has hired Fred Poston as VP/Operations. Fred will be responsible for all network production operations – programming, budgets, staffing and scheduling.
Crown Media Holdings, Inc., owner and operator of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel has made Brian Stewart the company EVP/CFO. Brian, who has been the interim CFO since his predecessor left on September 30, will assume his position immediately.
Tom Mazzarelli has been appointed the Executive Producer of Fox’s new national morning show – still untitled – which will be based in New York. Tom will begin his duties this month and the show will debut next January on the FOX O&O affiliates, airing living in most areas at 9am.
ABC News has named Nancy Han the Executive Producer/Early Morning News Content. She will manage the editorial content and production for World News Now and the newly renamed America This Morning in addition to newscasts on Good Morning America and oversight on the ABC News digital products. She will report to Paul Mason, SVP, ABC News.
Viacom Inc.’s CFO/EVP, Michael J. Dolan, will leave the company at the end of 2006. Viacom’s CFO responsibilities will be overseen by Thomas Dooley, SVP/CAO, following Dolan’s exit. Michael joined Viacom in April 2005. As SVP/CAO, Thomas Dooley reports to Philippe Dauman, President/CEO at the same time.
