CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

05/05/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 5, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Steadfast Star Wars fans will finally get what they have been clamoring for when Lucasfilm Ltd. and Fox Home Entertainment release the original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD of September 12.  The new releases feature the original movies, Star Wars (which Lucas later re-titled Star Wars A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as they were released in theaters back in 1977, 1980 and 1983, respectively.  Previously the original versions of the movies were released only on VHS.  Fans, being … well fans, were unhappy with George Lucas a few years back when he released special digitally-edited versions of the movies on DVD explaining that the movies as originally released in theaters weren’t exactly as he had wanted.  So, what fans will get this time are two-disc DVD sets of each release, which will include the original version of the movie as well as Lucas’ 2004 DVD version, all featuring commentary by Lucas and key cast and crew members.  Taking a page from Disney, the new DVD sets will only be available for three months, through December 31.  International release dates are expected to be on or about the same day.

In other Star Wars September 12th news:

  • LEGO will release its new Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, a new group of toys that includes the ability to customize your own Star Wars characters.
  • LucasArts and TT Games will release LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, the sequel to last year’s humorous videogame.  The new game will be released for Sony’s PlayStation 2 and PSP, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Xbox, and Nintendo’s GameCube, DS and Game Boy Advance.
  • Hasbro will also release a new collection of Star Wars products including new vintage Kenner figures.  Hasbro will also produce a limited edition George Lucas Stormtrooper action figure, which is available through the Star Wars Ultimate Galactic Hunt.
  • Not for 9/12, but news nonetheless, Ballantine Del Rey will publish two new Star Wars books this fall.  A new novel, Darth Bane: Path of Destruction by Drew Karpyshyn, will debut on October 6,and set 1,000 years before Episode IV A New Hope. And The Making of Star Wars: A New Hope.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Canada’s YTV will launch Pandalian (26 x 30 min), Nelvana’s new animated fantasy/adventure series, on multiple platforms this summer.  The launch begins on June 7 with a sneak peek at a full episode of the series on the new Pandalian webpage.  YTV will air a promotional spot to support the online sneak peek as the first episode simultaneously debuts on video on-demand.  The show will bow on YTV in its regular timeslot on Wednesday, July 5, at 3:30p.  Pandalian follows the misadventures of Toby, a humble panda on his quest to save his planet from the clutches of the evil king, and is a co-production of Fuji Creative Corporation, Planet Inc. and TVbean, licensed by Funimation Productions Ltd. and Nelvana International Limited.

Independent film and distribution company Imperia Entertainment, Inc. has acquired the majority interest in Muller Media, Inc., a film distribution company, and has recapitalized Muller with its subsidiary Whiskers, LLC, which owns the upcoming family movie Whiskers.  Produced by Jordan Klein (Flipper, Splash, Jaws, Cocoon), Whiskers follows the adventures of an intelligent sea lion and the family he befriends.

MORE KIDS STUFF

As we head into those final months of school it can only mean a few things: kids will be out for the summer, The 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and we adults won’t be out for the summer.  At any rate, as if there wasn’t enough pressure on the Bee finalists this year the final round will air live in primetime on ABC, Thursday June 1, 8-10p, from Washington, DC; in HD and Surround Sound no less.  Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts will host the primetime finals.  The preliminary championship rounds of the Bee will air live earlier in the day on ESPN (12-3p), which has televised the entire Bee since 1994.

AOL Music will debut a special AOL Sessions today featuring a performance by Pearl Jam (http://www.aolmusic.com), as well as interviews the group.  Taped in Seattle, fans will be able to watch and hear the concert that will include songs from Pearl Jam’s new album, released this week, in addition to some older songs.  Fans will also be able to listen to the new album in its entirety on AOL Music as part of its Full CD Listening Party until Sunday, May 7.

Gina D’s Kids Club has begun airing as a M-F strip at 7a, on three new stations: KCPO/Sioux Fall, KCPL/Rapid City and KCPM/Fargo. The series from Raven Moon Entertainment, Inc. is available in 80+ of the country.  Raven Moon Entertainment, Inc. plans to release Gina D’s Kids Club programs on DVD to parents and educators following the show’s launch on public television stations this summer.  Gina D’s Kids Club was created by producers Joey and Bernadette DiFrancesco, and is distributed by Role Entertainment.

Kraft Foods and Great American Country are teaming up to showcase a new short-form series, GAC Short Cuts, to promote Oscar Mayer’s new Sing the Jingle, Be a Star contest. Premiering May 8, the series will relate the life and budding music career of Taylor Swift, a16-year-old singer from Hendersonville, TN. Each GAC Short Cut tells a three-part story over one hour on the network with the GAC camera crew following the Taylor at school, at home and in the studio. Oscar Mayer will receive a co-branded segment open and close, product integration and an adjacent commercial.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Bolt Media partnered with the Hip Hop Theater Festival to create a platform to make hip hop culture more accessible to a wider audience.  To do this Bolt will develop a Hip Hop Theater Festival area on its site (www.bolt.com/HipHopTF) for all festival-related information about live events, tickets, and the Voice on Blast Competition, where people can submit their own hip hop content (e.g. monologues, poems, music, video).  The mission of The Hip Hop Theater Festival, which kicked off this week in Chicago, is to introduce new artistic works from diverse cultures and points of view to the public.  The Festival will visit NYC, San Francisco and Washington DC.

Disney Consumer Products is set to launch a new line of products based on High School Musical (HSM), the Disney Channel movie, beginning this month.  Targeted to tweens, the line will be available exclusively at 500+ Limited Too stores and 100 of its Justice stores.  The line will include T-shirts and other merchandise.  Disney Consumer Products plans to expand the HSM line of merchandise to include a full line of apparel, accessories, home decor and stationery that will begin rolling out for back-to-school this year and on through spring 2007.  Limited Too and Justice stores will also carry the HSM Encore Edition DVD, a second music CD, HSM Special Edition, and the HSM Junior Novel.

BBC Worldwide is celebrating Charlie & Lola Celebrate Your Sibling Week all this week around the world.  The initiative aims to encourage kids to enjoy the sibling relationship of Charlie and his little sister Lola through the Charlie & Lola TV series, which airs in the US on the Playhouse Disney block and online activities, and the books by author Lauren Child.  The effort also features an outreach program including classroom activity kits created by Young Minds Inspired and distributed to 20,000 preschools and daycare centers nationwide.

Moms are the main gatekeepers for the Kids 6-11 set, when it comes to the internet, TV and video games, according to The American Kids Study from Mediamark Research Inc.  While that isn’t so surprising a fact, the study also found that just over 80% of moms/stepmoms reported they watch TV with their kids after dinner on a typical school day, and 67% say they watch with kids after school but before dinner, while at the beginning of the day 31% watched TV prior to school on a regular school day. Conducted between March 8 and August 1st last year, The America Kids Study survey includes responses from 3,666 primary caregivers, which MRI reports were “overwhelmingly mothers/stepmothers.”
Other findings:

  • Continuing with TV viewing, just over 13% of mom/stepmoms said they allow their kids to make their own rules about what shows, channels or videos they watch.  Half the respondents say they limit the amount of time their kids watch TV/videos each day.
  • When it comes to the internet slightly more than half the mom/stepmoms said their kids are not allowed to go on the web without adult supervision.  11% reported they rely on an internet company’s parent control or kid portal when their kids are online, and about 7% say they just trust their kids to choose wisely.
  • On the topic of video games close to half said they only let their kids play video games that the moms purchase for them.
