Cynopsis: Kids!

5/04/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 4, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia (he’s the one who flies) is directing It’s a Mall World, a short-form series (12×5′) for apparel retailer American Eagle Outfitters, which will run on MTV as well as on the retailers website ae.com.  The series follows a group of young adults who work at stores in a mall, and yes one of them works at an American Eagle store, I know you’re surprised.  Three-minute versions of the episodes will premiere on MTV during The Real World: Sydney beginning this summer and in American Eagle stores nationwide.  The full-length five-minute episodes will run exclusively on ae.com Thursdays at 8p, from August 2, 2007.  It’s a Mall World is produced by Ventimiglia’s Divide Pictures.

Entara Ltd., an entertainment rights company, has inked a deal with March Entertainment to co-produce Dex Hamilton: Alien Entomologist (26×23′) the new animated comedy/action/adventure series.

MORE KIDS STUFF

US Anime fans will be able to digitally download the Japanese anime series Death Note beginning this month, under a deal between VIZ Media and Direct2Drive, IGN Entertainment’s online store.  The first episode of the English subtitled version of the series will debut May 10, 2007.  Oh so popular in Japan, Death Note is not, as one might guess from the title, for young kids.  Based on the Shueisha manga series of the same name, VIZ Media acquired the rights to Death Note from Nippon Television Network Corporation earlier this year.

Univision‘s Premios Juventud (Youth Awards) returns for its fourth edition with a 3-hour special broadcast live from Miami on July 19 at 8p.  Premios Juventud recipients will be determined by popular vote online on Univision.com (Uniclave: Premios Juventud).  The voting will take place through May 31. In addition to the awards, several scholarships will be awarded to Hispanic youth for academic, sport, and musical achievements. More information is available at Univision.com.

Disney launched a MySpace-like social networking portal aimed at kids under 14. Disney Xtreme Digital XD is designed to be a family-friendly hangout equipped with parental controls to give parents oversight of what their kids are doing online. For instance, the chat feature requires parental approval before kids can go beyond selected canned responses designed to limit sharing of personal information. Kids can make their own home profile pages decorated with Disney content, gather to play games, watch videos, create their own channel and, of course, buy Disney merchandise.

TitleMatch Entertainment Group and entered into a distribution deal for animation content from TMS Entertainment, a subsidiary of SEGA Animation.  Under terms of the agreement TitleMatch will hold the exclusive US DVD distribution rights to TMS Presents: Anime Classics, a series comprised of three unique anime volumes including Orguss, Nobody’s Boy Remi, and Cat’s Eye season one.  While portions of the Orguss series was previously released on VHS here, this is the first time the other two properties will be available in the US.  ImaginAsian Entertainment Inc brokered this agreement.  Additionally, TMS plans to promote the TMS Presents volumes through airings of the episodes on ImaginAsian’s iaTV beginning June 2007.

A clarification from a story earlier this week, it is DIC’s Saturday morning block on CBS, and it will feature American Greetings kid’s properties.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The World of Beatrix Potter is introducing its new brand, Peter Rabbit Naturally Better, which will focus on socially-responsible and earth-friendly products across all licensing categories.  Already launched in the UK, Peter Rabbit Naturally Better will bow in the US with a line of organic foods from Peter Rabbit Organics this fall 2007.  The US end of the initiative is being led by property rights holder, Frederick Warne, a unit of the Penguin Group, with The Copyrights Group, worldwide agent for The World of Beatrix Potter, and The Wildflower Group, the North American agent for the brand.

Universal Electronics Inc. will introduce its new TV remote control designed to give parents some security that if they aren’t in the room their kids aren’t watching inappropriate shows.  The Cricket Kids Remote allow kids to only watch kids programming, the kid friendly remote features with bright colors and 14 big buttons that feature kid networks name and logo so kids can identify the network they want to watch.  I don’t know about the rest of you, but in our home we spend more time looking for the dang remote, which mysteriously disappears on a moment-to-moment basis.

More Shrek the Third movie tie-ins, the DreamWorks Animation movie opens May 18, 2007.

  • Skechers is launching a Shrek by Skechers line of footwear for kids this month.  The new shoe line will be co-branded with the main characters from the movie.
  • Kamhi World debuts a line of talking pens featuring the voices of characters from Shrek the Third saying lines from the movie.  I think it is important for parents to note that each pen is good for an average of 3,000-5,000 playbacks, so don’t take it on a car trip.

I hesitate to tell you this terrible news just before the weekend  but … Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events are to be released by HarperCollins in paperback on Tuesday, May 8, 2007.  On the upside is that it is just the first two books in the series, No.1: The Bad Beginning or, Orphans! and No. 2: The Reptile Room or, Murder!  Of course where there is an upside, there is also a downside … each paperback book in the series will include a HarperCollins’s The Cornucopian Cavalcade, a free supplement including Snickety comics, activities, stories and advice (poor advice no doubt).

STONE SOUP

Don’t forget, tomorrow May 5, 2007 is Free Comic Book Day.  Have fun.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Tim Kelly joins Juniper Content Corporation as VP/Affiliate Marketing, ¡Sorpresa! Network.  Kelly will be responsible for affiliate marketing and promotions efforts for national distributors and local systems for the kid’s network.  He will report to the network’s President and COO, Leonard Firestone.  Kelly had most recently served as Sr. Product Marketing Manager, DISH Network/Echostar Communications.

FremantleMedia Enterprises grows its US operation with the appointment of Jeff Tahler to the new position of VP/Acquisitions, North America.  Based in LA, Tahler will acquire content for FME across all genres.  He will report to CEO, David Ellender and will also work closely with FME’s London-based VP Programming, Mark Gray, in acquiring content with multi-platform potential.  Most recently Tahler was SVP/Acquisitions and Family Entertainment, Miramax Film Company, where he is credited with building the Miramax Family brand.
