MTV Networks is teaming up with Usher, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Nick Cannon and Darren Criss to surprise worthy college students across the country with a Random Act of mtvU. Starting Monday, May 6, and premiering throughout that week, MTV, MTV2 and mtvU will air segments in which hardworking, civic-minded students are surprised with grants and gifts from the networks as well as appearances from some of the biggest celebrities in pop culture. Each segment will premiere on MTV during the 4p hour and subsequently run on MTV2 and mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network. The “Random Acts” include $24,000 in tuition funding, to VIP passes for the students to see their favorite artists.
ABC‘s cop shop drama Rookie Blue makes its season four premiere on Thursday, May 23 at 10p. In the opener, Andy and Nick return to 15 Division from undercover duty to find their personal and professional lives in disarray.
TV Land summer lineup starts to sizzle on Wednesday, June 19. Hot in Cleveland kicks things off at 10p, with a special event in scripted programming: a live broadcast. At 10:30p The Exes returns for its third season. Ending the night at 11p is The Soul Man. In the new season, Cedric will return to the format that catapulted him to superstardom- stand-up comedy: he’ll end each episode performing a two-minute set in front of the studio audience.
ABC Family kicks off new comedy Wednesdays on May 29 starting at 8p. Melissa and Joey will have its third season premiere, as Joe pursues a new job opportunity, sending Mel into a panic when she realizes he may actually leave. Season two of Baby Daddy follows at 8:30p as Ben tries to convince Riley he’s changed his playboy ways. At 9p, Dancing Fools, the ultimate comedy reality studio dance show, debuts. The show is hosted by Baby Daddy’s Melissa Peterman.
Lifetime‘s Drop Dead Diva returns for a fifth season with 13 new episodes on Sunday, June 23, at 9p. John Ratzenberger will reprise his role as Kim’s father, while Jamie Ray Newman returns as Grayson’s ex-fiancee Vanessa. The network’s new drama Devious Maids will debut immediately following Drop Dead Diva.
Syfy series Haunted Collector investigates the home where Hollywood legend Orson Welles once lived on Wednesday, May 8 at 9p. Paranormal expert John Zaffis and his team reveal the odd events that took place when home owner Joe Liebke first screened the Welles’ classic Citizen Kane for friends. Academy Award-winning musician Paul Williams, who once lived in the house, also appears in the episode.
Zodiak Americas has announced a partnership with acclaimed showrunner and reality producer Jeff Apploff (Hardcore Pawn, Celebrity Wife Swap) and his company Apploff Entertainment. Under the terms of the agreement, Apploff will create new, unscripted formats to be co-produced with Zodiak in the US and distributed internationally by Zodiak Rights. Zodiak has a long history with Apploff, who created and produced nearly 150 hours of the RDF/Zodiak game show-Don’t Forget the Lyricsfor both Fox primetime and Twentieth Television syndication.
Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment (GVE) has announced a new licensing partnership with Sonar Entertainment, Inc., a developer, producer and distributor of television series, mini-series and movies for the global television marketplace. GVE and Sonar had worked together under a distribution agreement since 2009. As part of the new licensing deal, GVE has the rights to distribute Sonar’s catalog and new release titles. The licensing partnership continues through September 15, 2015.
May 3 is the deadline for entries in the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards competition for expanded awards recognition in the category of Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media and newly created category of Outstanding Interactive Program. The Juried Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media has been expanded this year to include four areas of competition: multi-platform storytelling, original interactive program, social TV experience and user experience and visual design. “The award recognizes the fact that network teams are now being built to handle this content. It’s such a deep part of the strategy behind creating instant engagement, as well as a tool for marketing tool and advertising,” Lori Schwartz, Governor of the Interactive Media Peer Group, tells Cynopsis.
President Obama has named Tom Wheeler to head the U.S. Federal Communication Commission. Wheeler, managing director at Core Capital Partners LP in Washington, succeeds Chairman Julius Genachowski. Wheeler needs confirmation from the Senate before joining the FCC. Mignon Clyburn, the commission’s senior Democrat, will serve as acting agency head until Wheeler’s confirmation.
Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg are teaming up on a new pilot for HBO, a half-hour dramedy about the lives of retired athletes living in Miami. Johnson is set to star in the untitled project. Entourage’s Stephen Levinson will pen the script and serve as executive producer with Wahlberg, Johnson, Dany Garcia and Peter Berg. HBO is planning to begin production in the fall.
BBC America has renewed conspiracy clone thriller Orphan Black for a second season. The show, from Temple Street Productions, will return with 10 new episodes as part of Supernatural Saturday in 2014.
Two new cops are joining the force at ABC‘s Rookie Blue. Priscilla Faia joins the cast as rookie Chloe Price, while Rachael Ancheril is set to play training Officer Marlo Cruz.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX came out on top Wednesday night delivering a 2.9/9 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s American Idol ranked #1 at 2.7/9, while CBS’ Survivor: Caramoan ranked #2 at 2.4/8. ABC’s Modern Family took over the lead from 9 to 9:30p at 3.6/10, followed by FOX’s American Idol at 3.0/8. At 9:30, FOX’s Idol went back into first place at 3.2/9. CBS’ Criminal Minds was second at 2.4/7. At 10p, CBS’ CSI took over the top spot at 1.9/5. Tied for the second spot were ABC’s Nashville and NBC’s Chicago Fire at 1.7/5.

Peter Levinsohn is joining Universal Pictures as President and Chief Distribution Officer. Levinsohn last served as President of New Media and Digital Distribution for Fox Filmed Entertainment. Michael Berkman has been named Vice President and Creative Director of Fusion, the new network from ABC and Univision. WorldNow, the online technology, content and revenue-solutions company for local media, has expanded its reach to include Social Media services and has hired Piers Mathieson as Social Media Director. Mathieson has built communities and brand strategies for numerous clients in the music and entertainment industry.
Cindy Sivak has joined Classic Rock Society of America in the newly created position of Vice President/Content & Talent and Executive Producer. Sivak will be responsible for overall CRSA programming and music industry outreach, including curating its archive of radio shows and artist interviews, booking of musical talent, and executive producing its live streaming Pay-Per-View concert series.
