Cynopsis: DIGITAL

05/02/08

Good morning, it’s Friday, May 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Now the flood gates are open. A day after Time Warner said it would begin releasing VOD movies day-in-date with DVDs, Apple says it has convinced Fox, Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Sony, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look to make movies available for purchase or rental on iTunes the day they come out on DVD. You won’t save much going digital – new releases are priced at $15 to buy or $4 to rent – but buying online is a far greener way to go. It will be interesting to see if Apple TV devices finally start selling.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

AT&T is ready to launch a mobile TV service using Qualcomm’s MediaFLO USA network this Sunday. CBS, ESPN, CNN, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Sony Pictures Television, NBC and Fox will contribute to a line up of 150 shows. The service will be available in 58 markets initially (including most top 20 DMA’s) viewable via two new exclusive handsets: the Vu from LG Electronics ($300 after rebate) and the Access from Samsung ($200 after rebate). The service itself also comes at a premium: $30/month pays for unlimited TV viewing and web browsing.

NBC may not want its content on YouTube, but that hasn’t stopped Hulu from launching a channel. There are currently 37 clips up from NBC and Fox shows such as Family Guy, The Office and 30 Rock, but no complete episodes.

This is good for a chuckle. myLifetime.com has created a series of animated shorts recreating famous movie scenes with cats and dogs playing the leads. Current Hollywood Tails include Casabarka, When Hairy Met Shaggy and Kitty & Louise, complete with requisite social components.

Call for content: Remember when you used to wrap your TV antenna in tinfoil to improve the reception? The NAB and CEA are sponsoring a Rabbit Ears Pioneers contest to gather such anecdotes from folks accustomed to getting TV over the air. Anything to help promote the digital switchover.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Instant messaging platform Meebo secured a $25 million round of investment led by JAFCO Ventures, with participation from Time Warner Investments, KTB Ventures and existing investors Sequoia Capital and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. The company has gotten a huge boost from its Meebo Rooms application, allowing fans of a show or a band to gather online and chat in real time.

Digg
joined the DataPortability Project, the volunteer open standards push launched in Nov. 2007 to identify best practices and promote the sharing of personal user information among sites. Digg joins Facebook, Google, Microsoft and LinkedIn, among others.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

In an apparent move to demonstrate it can survive just fine without being on the iPhone, Adobe has cobbled together a consortium of phone and wireless device manufactures who will adapt a dynamically updatable version of Flash on their products. As part of the “Open Screen” alliance, which includes Sony Ericsson, Nokia, LG and Motorola, Adobe will remove restrictions and publish API’s for the player to encourage developers to create mobile-optimized applications.

Meanwhile the BlackBerry announced a new deal to try to bear fruit outside of the North American market. Research in Motion, Ltd. signed a new global distribution deal with Plainfield, IN-based Brightpoint to handle sales outside of the U.S. and Canada. Brightpoint also has distribution agreements with Nokia and High Tech Computer Corp.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

A U.S. District Court ruled that AOL, RealNetworks and Yahoo owe back royalty payments to the American Society of Composers, Artists and Publishers (ASCAP), after the parties failed to come up with an agreed upon rate of compensation for online distribution of licensed music. ASCAP pegs the amount owed at $100 million.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer prepared shareholders for the possibility that the Yahoo acquisition may be a no go in an interview with the WSJ. The board failed to come to an agreement on Wednesday, leaving the decision to go hostile or walk away largely up to Mr. Ballmer.

Comcast continues to lose basic cable subs – 57,000 during Q1 – but also continues to help make up for their loss by gaining high speed internet and phone customers, adding 492,000 and 639,000 new subscribers respectively.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

After 11 months of testing Google TV Ads is now open for business to U.S. advertisers providing a simple, straightforward, do-it-yourself interface for placement of ads on Dish Network. Advertisers can choose networks and dayparts based on how much they’re willing to spend. The program provides a tool recommending spot buys based on audience demos. Advertisers pay only for ads that airs and receive a detailed report on where and when it ran. Customers without their own creative can turn to Google’s Ad Creation Marketplace comprised of industry professionals providing script writing, editing, production and voice over services. For a limited time Google will even cover these creative costs out their end, up to $2,000.

Yahoo may be ready to announce a long-term search outsourcing deal with Google next week, reports the WSJ. The two companies area trying to come up with an agreement that would satisfy antitrust regulators because, combined, they would serve 83% of the U.S. search ad market.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

A new cross-platform report from Nielsen Online finds that mobile internet sites are boosting traffic to conventional internet sites by 13% on average. Content that is easy to digest on the road such as weather and entertainment are getting even more of a lift. Adoption rates remain low in the U.S., however. Only 13.7% of the 87 million U.S. mobile users actively surf with their phones, according to Nielsen.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Veteran kids web designer and producer Kate Condon was named Executive Producer for Spanish Language network site Sorpresatv.com. Kate most recently worked on youth web portals for AOL. She will be based in the Washington, D.C. area, reporting to Chris Firestone, SVP/Digital Media & Broadcast Operations.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

IGN.com has created a cool communal site called Grand Theft Auto ‘hood featuring a user generated mission index and an interactive wiki-map powered by Google where players can help document Gotham-inspired Liberty City.  The Fox Interactive Media-owned site stirred the pot this week posting a particularly lewd clip from the new game entitled “Ladies of Liberty City: Very Bad Things.”  The strip club outtake, which has since been removed but is available here on the Boinkology blog, illustrates why the game is a such a magnet for criticism and perhaps why it is expected to set sales records.
