~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ABC launches the new action game show Downfall from FremantleMedia North America on June 22 at 9p. The game show, with six one-hour weekly episodes, pits contestants against the clock where they will have the chance to win major prizes as well as $1 million as they try to quickly answer trivia questions in seven rounds all while perched on top of a 10-story building in Los Angeles. In each round, players will try to answer all their questions before life-size copies of prizes and cash go over the edge of a gigantic conveyor belt, going off the roof of the high-rise and crashing 100 feet below. If the cash goes off the building the game is over and the played is eliminated.

A&E rolls out two new original series next month as part of the network’s Saturday morning schedule:

  • Drill Team – A group of experts work against the clock to help a frustrated homeowner get a project finished before a big event. The one-hour series produced for A&E Network by Nancy Glass Productions debuts June 5 at 12p.
  • $100 Makeover – This series will inspire viewers to de-clutter, organize and transform their homes for just $100 per room. Produced by Screaming Flea Productions for A&E, the series premieres June 19 with double episodes at 10a and 1030a.

Travel Channel brings back a third season of Man v. Food on June 16 with back-to-back episodes starting at 9p. During the new season, host Adam Richman travels coast to coast offering up ideas on foodie destinations and dishes.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Now that the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act (STELA) was put into law yesterday, DISH Network said it will launch local channels in the 29 markets that have been going without satellite carriage of their local TV station signals. This means DISH will deliver local stations to every market in the country which the company agreed to do as part of the bill. This bill also allows DISH to be involved in the distant TV signal importation business once again. STELA passed on May 12 and is a five-year reauthorization of the blanket license that gives satellite companies the opportunity to import distant affiliated TV station signals to subscribers in markets where they are not receiving a comparable viewable signal.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito is working with Bravo on a new weekly culinary competition series titled Rocco’s Dinner Party. The premise of the series has DiSpirito judging four aspiring chefs during each episode to determine if they have the necessary skills and talent to impress experts within the cooking field at a private dinner party. The final winner from each episode will take home a cash prize. Notional, an IAC company is developing the series in partnership with Bravo. DiSpirito has authored six cookbooks, winning the James Beard Award for one as well as making numerous television appearances on NBC’s The Restaurant, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Today, The Martha Stewart Show among others in addition to a guest judge spot on Bravo’s Top Chef series.

TLC tapped Kevin Roberts to host the second season of BBQ Pitmasters which serves up a new competition format. The series commences production in Los Angeles in June and is slated to premiere August 12. Roberts is an executive chef, TV personality and has penned two cookbooks in addition to owning three, and soon four, sports bars in the San Diego area.

Syfy is delving more into the reality genre by approving three new shows:

  • Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen (wt) – Top Chef alum Marcel Vigneron uses molecular gastronomy in his new catering and event company.
  • Paranormal Witness (wt) – Anthology docu-drama about a different person each week who has experienced paranormal activity.
  • Face Off (wt) – Competition series featuring special-effects makeup artists.

USA Network okayed a half-hour comedy script from Linda Bloodworth titled Driven starring comedian Ron White as an jobless Austin, TX resident who starts a limo business. The project is from Universal Cable Productions and Bloodworth’s husband Harry Thomason will also executive produce. 

Lifetime has two new spinoff series in the works based on Project Runway. One show is already in pre-production and features Runway stars Santino Rice and Austin Scarlett as they travel the US giving makeovers to women in need of fresh styling tips. The second series, tentatively called Love’s Divine will follow Runway host Heidi Klum and her husband Seal as they counsel other married couples around the country.

~ RATINGS ~

Wednesday  A18-49 Analysis: FOX polished off a win Wednesday night which was also the last night of May Sweep at 8.2/24 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX’s American Idol won at 8p with a 6.6/21 with UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe next at 1.6/5. During the 9p hour, American Idol on FOX surged to a 9.4/26 with the climax spilling over into the 10p hour at 12.0/32. FOX’s American Idol drew in 24.2 million total viewers from 8p-1007p though overall the finale was down -18% among A18-49 compared to last year’s season finale and -16% with total viewers. Also at 9p, the Criminal Minds season finale on CBS placed second with a 3.1/9. Then at 10p, CBS’ CSI: NY season conclusion was #1 at 2.7/8 while ABC’s movie Transformers trailed at #2 with a 2.0/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

RDF Rights (RDFR), part of the RDF Media Group, hired J.C. Mills beginning in June as VP/US Acquisitions to be the primary contact conferring with US agents and producers and responsible for securing international TV distribution rights for the company. Based at RDF USA offices in Los Angeles, J.C. will report to Jane Millichip, COO, RDFR. J.C. previously worked for Shine International based in London as a Sales Executive.

Effective immediately, Andrew Ault becomes Executive Creative Director for NBC Universal’s Integrated Sales Marketing team’s internal creative agency. Andrew will offer creative vision and management for Integrated Sales Marketing encompassing the Green is Universal, Women at NBCU, Healthy at NBCU and corporate NBCU initiatives. Furthermore, Andrew will head the New York-based in-house creative team and develop design concepts and strategies on behalf of the company’s cross-platform sales efforts. Andrew reports to Maryam Banikarim, SVP/Integrated Sales Marketing.

Krupp Kommunications, Inc. added Joann Mignano as Account Manager, charged with the goal to increase the company’s entertainment division. Joann joins from FYI Public Relations – New York where she was VP/Entertainment and Lifestyle.

Marissa Ronca was appointed VP/Development at truTV up from Senior Director/Development. In her new role, Marissa will oversee all facets of the network’s new program development roster. Based in New York, she reports to Darren Campo, SVP/Programming, Production and Development, truTV.

ESPN tagged Kevin Ota as Director/Digital Communications where he will head media relations involving the network’s digital products such as ESPN.com, mobile, ESPN3.com, digital audio, fantasy, gaming among others. Kevin will be located at the network’s headquarters in Bristol, CT and reports to Katina Arnold, VP/Communications.
