British recording artist Cheryl Cole appears to be out as judge on FOX’s fall reality singing competition show, The X Factor.  It is being reported in several sectors, though not officially by FOX, co-host Nicole Scherzinger will replace Cole as judge. It is unclear if the other co-host, Steve Jones will continue to share hosting duties with some other unnamed personality or if he will become the solo host.

New adventure dating reality series, Love in the Wild on NBC will now premiere a month later on June 29.  Originally, NBC slated June 1 as the show’s launch date. The extra four weeks allows NBC the chance to promote the series in The Voice which airs its finale on June 28. Love in the Wild is produced by Endemol USA.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Networks says “I Do” to a new eight-episode wedding series, Don’t Tell the Bride that is based on a successful UK show sporting the same name.  The series follows eight cash-poor couples and helps them create a wedding of their dreams. The twist is the bride and groom can’t see each other during the month leading up to their wedding day and the groom plans the entire event in secret with help from his best man. The bride ends up being kept in the dark about all the details until right before the wedding.  Shed Media US is producing the series, based on a format from Renegade Pictures and Digital Rights Group.

A proposal was submitted by Cablevision Systems Corp. in response to the FCC’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on the retransmission consent reform issue.  Cablevision outlined three market-based reforms which, according to the company, fall within the FCC’s domain to reform the good faith negotiation rules in an effort to protect consumers by avoiding blackouts of “must see” programming.  Cablevision’s three reforms include:

  • Forbid tying – halting the practice of requiring the carriage of unrelated cable channels, owned by broadcasters, in order to also carry their broadcast networks.
  • Require transparency – Cablevision contends retransmission fees should be made public.
  • Forbid discrimination – continue allowing broadcasters to set the price of carriage, but don’t let them discriminate against cable and satellite providers based on size or other factors.

On Wednesday, Oprah Winfrey ended her 25-year run of her syndicated The Oprah Winfrey Show on a high mark by posting a 13.3 HH rating in the overnight metered markets, based on Nielsen’s data.  This is a preliminary number and does not include the St. Louis market which had to preempt the show for storm news coverage.  Wednesday’s finale episode became the highest rated for The Oprah Winfrey Show in more than 17 years since February 21, 1994.  Earlier this week, Monday’s “Surprise Farewell, Part 1” delivered a 10.2 HH rating and Tuesday’s “Surprise Farewell, Part 2” ticked up to a 10.7 HH rating, both based on overnight metered market ratings.

As the 2010-2011 broadcast season closes, Univision said it has increased its A18-49 primetime audience by +8% while the other major broadcast networks have all declined in this demo: NBC -14%; ABC -9%; CBS -8%; and FOX -4%. Overall, Univision will likely end the primetime broadcast season with an average audience of 3.7 million total viewers and 1.9 million among A18-49.

Telemundo reported this May will result in the Spanish-language network’s best performance ever across all key demos and total viewers.  Telemundo is averaging 1.56 million total viewers; 918,000 among A18-49 (up +41% year-over-year); and the network is averaging 500,000 with A18-34.

WNBC-TV’s live daily one-hour lifestyle and entertainment show LX New York changed its name to New York Live.  The show is hosted by NBC 4’s Jane Hanson and Sara Gore covering restaurants, Broadway premieres and red carpet events, fashion and pop culture.

Jabot Cosmetics, the fictional beauty company featured on CBS’ daytime soap The Young and the Restless will become a reality for consumers.  In a licensing deal with CBS Consumer Products and Sony Pictures Television, Jabot Cosmetics will be created and manufactured by beauty company Fusion Brands.  A full line of color cosmetics and skincare products will be available for purchase starting with a Red Carpet collection beginning June 13 via www.shopjabot.com  . On June 21-22, Tracey Bregman, the Y&R actress who plays Lauren Fenmore and the “face” of the line will host a special on HSN introducing the Red Carpet collection.  Following on July 28, HSN will air a five-hour full line launch also available at www.hsn.com  .  Jabot Cosmetics will further be sold at Ulta retail locations starting this October.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

British audiences will also get FX’s new original comedy series Wilfred headlined by Elijah Wood and Jason Gann.  Wilfred was picked up by BBC in an international broadcast deal for free television in the UK.  BBC3 will debut Wilfred this fall and FX will premiere the series on June 23 at 10p.

Broadcast, online and wireless service, Live Well Network designed for emerging digital channels in local markets secured new affiliation deals with the Scripps Television Station Group, reaching more than 10% of US households.  Scripps’ nine stations include six ABC affiliates in Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Phoenix, Tampa and Baltimore; and three NBC affiliates in Kansas City, West Palm Beach and Tulsa.  Live Well Network was already cleared on 16 other affiliates including eight ABC O&Os, five owned by Belo Corp., two from Lilly Broadcasting and one from LKK Group.  In total the reach of Live Well Network now extends to 40% of US TV households.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Days before Bravo’s launch of Platinum Hit featuring Kara DioGuardi as head judge, the network is working with DioGuardi on a second project.  The docu-series in development, labeled the KARA project will take viewers on the inside of the music industry through DioGuardi’s point of view as songwriter/producer.  World of Wonder will produce the new series with Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey and Tom Campbell as executive producers while DioGuardi and Stephen Finfer will serve as executive producers for Arthouse Entertainment.

Season seven of Showtime’s Weeds, starring Mary-Louise Parker not only jumps the plot ahead three years after Nancy (Parker) is released from federal prison, the show added a trio of cast members.  Martin Short will play a quirky lawyer in at least three episodes; Aidan Quinn will appear in four eps as a CEO of an investment firm; and Lindsay Sloane will play an artist named Maxeen.  These three stars join others already signed for season seven including David Clennon, playing Maxeen’s husband; Pablo Schreiber as an army supply sergeant and brother of Nancy’s former cellmate played by Olga Sosnovska; and Gary Anthony Williams as Nancy’s halfway house counselor.  Jennifer Jason Leigh also returns for four eps as Nancy’s sister.  Production is currently happening and the new season is set to premiere June 27 at 10p.
