Howard Shapiro, Chairman of Weigel Broadcasting Co. passed away. He was 86. Mr. Shapiro was considered a “larger than life” figure in the Chicago business and broadcasting scene for decades. He ushered Weigel Broadcasting from a single UHF television station trying to gain a foothold in Chicago to a company with more than ten stations in three markets in addition to involvement in two national broadcast networks. Mr. Shapiro was still heavily involved in daily business affairs as recently as last week. His interest in broadcasting began in 1964 when he was one of the first advertisers on WCIU-TV, Chicago’s first UHF television station. Mr. Shapiro’s commercials were for C.E.T., a television retailer that he established in 1949. Chicagoans may still recall C.E.T.’s iconic jingle and phone number, Mohawk 4-4100. Mr. Shapiro later bought stock in the financially troubled TV station and then took over the operations and ownership during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Mr. Shapiro also was president of the Chicago Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences from 1983 to 1987 was the recipient of the Silver Circle Award in 1997. Mr. Shapiro’s wife Jacqueline Cooper Shapiro preceded him in death in 2003; he is survived by three sons; one daughter; and four grandchildren. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Shapiro are pending.
