Good morning. It’s Friday, May 19, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

MTVN Networks Asia Pacific has unveiled its plans to launch MTV and Nickelodeon in New Zealand, both of which will be carried by SKY Television and available to 43% of TV households in New Zealand.  Both channels will feature locally produced shows and events, and locally-tailored programming, schedules, and on-air promotions.  Nickelodeon New Zealand will launch on August 1, 2006, while MTV New Zealand is slated to debut on August 19, 2006.  Nickelodeon was previously seen in New Zealand as part of the pan-regional Nick Asia feed. Chris Keely Director/Business Development, MTV Networks Asia Pacific will head the start-up efforts for both channels, with key management announcements to follow soon.

Aardman Animation has launched its own sales division Aardman International, which will be led by Miles Bullough, who is also the Aardman’s head of TV program development.  Aardman will maintain its existing relationships with co-production and distribution partners including Decode Entertainment (Planet Sketch and Chop Socky Chooks), however, beginning with MIPCOM 2006 Aardman International will take on the responsibility for the worldwide distribution of its own in-house productions, including the UK.  Aardman International will distribute shows from Aardman’s library include the upcoming series Shaun the Sheep (CBBC), The Flowerheads (Cbeebies), Angry Kid, Rex The Runt, and Morph (short films). 

The Louisiana House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill (HB 1381) this week that if made into law would prevent the sale of certain video games to minors.  Under the bill, a judge would have the legal power decide whether or not a video game is “patently offensive to prevailing standards” and if the game, “taken as a whole, appeals to the minor’s morbid interest in violence.”  If a given video game did not measure up to the set of criteria, the judge would then be able to remove the game from stores and fine, and even jail, a retailer convicted of selling the game.  The Entertainment Software Association responded to the passing of the bill explaining that the bill was similar to bills passed by other state’s, the bills were eventually squelched by the courts which found they impeded First Amendment rights.

LAT TV, a new Spanish-language TV channel, will launch today in five major markets.  It will debut in Austin (KVAT), Dallas/Fort Worth (KJJM), Houston (KCVH), Phoenix (KVPA) and San Antonio (KISA).  Headquartered in Houston, LAT TV will offer diverse programming from producers and independent distributors in Latin America, Europe, Mexico and the U.S.  The channel will air a large children’s programming block in addition to entertainment and education, fitness, sports, feature films, comedies, soap operas and cooking shows. LAT TV is the channel brand name of LatinAmerica Broadcasting, Inc., a Houston-based private company.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Julie Walters has been cast in the BBC’s adaptation of The Ruby In The Smoke, the first book in author Philip Pullman’s Sally Lockhart young adult series.  In addition to the previously announced casting of Billie Piper as Sally Lockhart, also joining the cast will be Robert Glenister, David Harewood, Ramon Tikaram, JJ Field and Don Gilet.  Slated to air on BBC One later this year The Ruby In The Smoke is scheduled to begin filming at the end of this month and will be followed by the second novel in the series The Shadow In The North, which will be filmed this summer and air in 2007.

CITV has picked up Captain Mack (52 x 10 min), a new stop-motion animated preschool series co-produced by Kickback Media and Cuppa Coffee Studios (JoJo’s Circus, Celebrity Death Match etc).  Production is set to begin fall 2006 and debut on CITV in fall 2007.  Kickback Media will handle the international sales and licensing for Captain Mack.

Universal’s movie The Tale of Despereaux has a new director, according to The Hollywood ReporterMike Johnson, Tim Burton’s co-director on The Corpse Bride, will now serve as the director of the 3D animated feature film based on Kate DiCamillo’s book The Tale of Despereaux: Being The Story Of A Mouse, A Princess, Some Soup And A Spool of Thread

MTV India is making its way from TV and into movies with the release of Ghoom is a 45min comedy/action movie.  Produced under MTV Fully Faltoo Films banner Ghoom will be released nationwide on June 2, and will premiere on MTV on June 17, 2006.  MTV Networks India also plans to release Ghoom on DVD.  Ghoom is presented by Coca-Cola in association with Nokia and Parle Hide ‘n’ Seek and radio partner 93.5 RED FM.

Directors/writers/producers Guillermo Del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron are teaming up on a new movie version of Roald Dahl’s book The Witches, per Variety.  Del Toro will write and direct The Witches with Cuaron producing the movie for Warner Bros.  Del Toro plans to make a much smaller movie than Nicholas Roeg’s 1989 version of the movie that starred Angelica Houston.

Discovery Networks US Hispanic Group debuted the programming lineups for its three networks, Discovery Kids en Espanol Discovery en Espanol, and Discovery Travel & Living (Viajar y Vivir) at its upfront presentation last night in NYC.  The Discovery Kids en Espanol line up for families and kids:

  • Learning Is Fun  this will feature Discovery Kids shows including Save-Ums!, Tutenstein, Kenny the Shark
  • Family Time  family targeted programming including: Desafio Todo Terreno, Darcy’s Wildlife, Trading Spaces Boys vs. Girls, Jeff Corwin Experience

MARKETING/LICENSING

Synacor, the Internet content and services provider, has inked a deal with Freeloader.com to make the new LEGO PC Games online gaming service available to 10+ million broadband homes.  The LEGO PC Games will be distributed by Synacor’s network of cable and telecommunications partners as part of family and entertainment packages.  Freeloader.com is a games digital distributor.

BKN International AG has appointed Benoit Runel as Managing Director, BKN New Media Ltd in Great Britain.  Runel will be responsible for all sales and marketing for BKN New Media in the UK, Germany, Benelux, Scandinavia, North America and emerging markets such as Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East.  Additionally, he will oversee all development and pre-production activities in the London-based studio as well as with establishing and managing all co-productions with international partners.  Runel joins BKN from Jetix Europe where he was SVP/Programming & Acquisitions.  Prior to that, Runel spent seven years with TF1 in France.
