USA unveiled its development slate for the 2013-2014 season, a mix of dramas and the network’s first-ever original half hour comedies, at its Upfront presentation at Pier 36 in New York. “With Modern Familyjoining our line-up in the fall, we can leverage television’s most popular comedy to serve as a powerful launch pad for new originals in this genre,” said Chris McCumber, Co-President of USA Network. “Our new series come from some of the best comedic talent in the business, and reflect USA’s style great characters, strong execution and compelling storytelling,” added Jeff Wachtel, Co-President of USA Network. Here’s a look:
- Sirens (from Apostle and Fox Television Studios in conjunction with Daybreak Pictures) follows three Chicago EMTs whose sometimes silly, self-righteous personalities make them unqualified for sustaining relationships. However, they’re uniquely qualified for saving anyone who winds up in their ambulance.
- Playing House (from Universal Cable Productions and American Work) centers on two best friends, a mom-to-be and a single career woman, who come back together when they need each other most.
- The pilot Love Is Dead (from Universal Cable Productions and Gaumont International Television) focuses on a unique company that specializes in breaking-up romantic relationships on behalf of those who are willing to pay to not be around when it happens.
- Horizon (from Universal Cable Productions) is a period genre drama set at the height of World War II. The pilot will go into production this summer.
- The Edge (from Universal Cable Productions and Executive Producer John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co.) is a thriller that explores one idealistic man’s journey after he leaves an NGO to join the world’s top venture capital firm.
- The story of an ER doctor whose life changes after he is involved in a gang shooting is explored in Complications (from Fox TV Studios).
- After an unconventional act of heroism gives a young FBI agent the opportunity to choose her next assignment, she chooses the bank crimes division in Los Angeles in Bank (from Universal Cable Productions).
- Blanco County (from Tom Welling Productions and Rob Thomas Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television) follows the story of a worldly pro baseball player who would rather spend his down time traveling the world than return to his small Texas hometown.
- Don’t Turn Around (from Grady Girl Productions) is a limited series about a young group of staffers who work on an island and get trapped at the end of the season.
- Hungry (from Universal Cable Productions) takes an inside look at the opening of a New York City hot spot, inspired by restaurateur Joe Bastianich’s life and his New York Times bestseller Restaurant Man.
- Legal thriller Shadow Counsel (from Universal Cable Productions) centers on Ethan, a former Army JAG attorney now working as a criminal lawyer in NY who is recruited by the FBI to crack an ongoing investigation.
“We had a terrific season last year, growing our audience on-air, digitally and socially. Now we are building on that success by continuing to add more original programming all year long, and by adding high-concept, shows to our schedule that will help us continue our mission of broadening out our 18-to-34-year old audience,” announced Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW, at the network’s Upfront presentation in New York’s City Center. He added that when considering whether a show makes it onto the CW schedule, he runs it through the filter of “Are there 100 episodes here?” Here are the shows that passed the test:
- The Originals (from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with My So-Called Company, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios), a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, focuses on Klaus Mikaelson, the original vampire-werewolf hybrid, as he returns the French Quarter of New Orleans, the city his family helped build.
- Robbie Amell stars as a young man with abilities he is only beginning to understand that lead him to his first encounter with The Tomorrow People (from Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios), a genetically advanced race with the abilities of telekinesis, teleportation and telepathic communication.
- The sweeping, romantic and racy new historical drama Reign (from CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television) stars Adelaide Kane as the young Mary, Queen of Scots.
- New drama Star-Crossed (from Ole Productions, Isla de Babel SL and 360 Powwow in association with CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television) centers on Emery and her romance with Roman, an alien.
- The survival of the human race is entirely in the hands of The 100 (from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios) as they must find a way to transcend their differences, unite and forge a new path on a wildly changed Earth that’s primitive, intense and teeming with the unknown.
- Reality series Famous in 12 (from Renegade 83 and Harvey Levin Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television and Telepictures) is a social experiment that tracks the lives of one determined family as they move to Los Angeles and seek fame in a 12-week time frame.
- The CW and Clear Channel Media and Entertainment have announced a multi-year partnership making The CW the exclusive television broadcaster of the two-day, iHeartRadio Music Festival. The CW will also be the exclusive broadcast home of iHeartRadio’s holiday Jingle Ball concert, the iHeartRadio Ultimate Pool Party, and more. The agreement also gives the CW exclusive streaming rights to the television specials on CWTV.com following the broadcasts.The three-year agreement begins with the iHeartRadio Ultimate Pool Party on Monday, July 15 at 8p.
NUVOtv held its upfront event at the Edison Ballroom in New York, announcing a lineup that kicks off on July 18. The network’s newly appointed Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lopez took the stage and announced, “Latinos are a force in this country. We have huge economic power and unprecedented political and cultural influence. It’s time for television to reflect who the modern Latino actually is.” Here’s a look at what’s coming up.
- The Jennifer Lopez Biography Special [wt] (from Nuyorican Productions) offers intimate access into the personal life and career of the inspiring artist.
- Gotta Dance takes a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of professional back-up dancers on Lopez’s world tour.
- Rodney’s Joy is a docu-series featuring Grammy award-winning producer, Rodney “Dark Child” Jerkins and his wife Joy Enriquez, a former Mexican American pop star who put her promising career on hold to raise a family.
- Set in the Latin style mecca of Miami, Oribe showcases the life and times of controversial Cuban-American celebrity hairstylist Oribe Canales.
- Stand Up and Deliver showcases top Latino comics.
- Mario Lopez: One-on-One is a Hollywood insider interview format show featuring a broad array of influential Latino superstars.
The future might be up in the air at American Idol, but The Voice has reportedly nailed down judges for its next two cycles. According to Entertainment Weekly, the show’s fall season will reunite original quartet Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green. Meanwhile, the show’s spring 2014 edition will switch back to its current panel of Levine, Shelton, Shakira and Usher. NBC is currently finalizing deals with Shakira and Usher.
Action movie star Steven Seagal is returning to REELZ with the acquisition of Steven Seagal Lawman, including the show’s never-before-seen third season. To get viewers ready REELZ will air the series’ first season starting Thursday, June 6 at 8p. Season two will air in fall 2013. The show’s eight-episode third season premieres in January 2014 and features Seagal teaming up with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona.
Wrestling hall of famer Steve Austin is back for a rowdier-than-ever third season of CMT‘s Redneck Island, premiering Wednesday, June 5 at 10:30p, immediately following the 2013 CMT Music Awards. Set in a remote tropical paradise, the show pits 15 contestants against one another in an ultimate redneck-style competition for a shot at $100,000.
Bookworms, take note. RLTV, the cable network and online destination for adults 50 plus, premieres Bookmark, a weekly series that explores the culture surrounding books in America today, tonight at 10p. Hosted by author, columnist and former CNN anchor Daryn Kagan, the show include stories on how books have shaped people’s lives, explores quirky aspects of literary culture, and offers interviews with America’s top authors.
HBO has greenlit a half-hour, untitled series from Mike Judge (King of the Hill). The half-hour comedy is set in the high tech gold rush of modern Silicon Valley, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling it.
Joe Mantegna returns to Outdoor Channel as host of MidwayUSA’s Gun Stories. The series’ third season kicks off Wednesday, July 3rd at 8p.
Astral’s The Movie Network and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central is hooking up Nurse Jackie addicts by providing subscribers with first access to remaining episodes of the series on multiplatform services. The previews start following episode six, which airs on Monday, May 20 at 9p on The Movie Network and 8p. on Movie Central. Immediately following the linear broadcast, episode seven will be available to subscribers on TMN GO, On-Line and On-Demand services only. This pattern will repeat itself for the remainder of the series’ 10-episode run, allowing multiplatform viewers to stay one week ahead of the linear broadcast schedule. InEastern Canada, new episodes will be available on TMN GO, TMN OnDemand and TMN OnLine. In Western Canada, new episodes will be available on Movie Central On Demand and via mobile and online with participating service providers.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment has announced that the recently commissioned a second series of Rectify will premiere on all Sundance Channel Global networks throughout Asia and Europe, including: Turkey, France, Iberia, Benelux and CEE. This follows the deal with ITVS GE and AMC/Sundance Channel Global for exclusive premiere window rights to the critically acclaimed drama in these regions.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX came out on top Wednesday night delivering a 2.7/8 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s American Idol ranked #1 at 3.0/10, while ABC’s The Middle and Family Tools combined at 1.6/ 6 for second, followed by Univision’s Porque el Amor Manda at 1.4/5. ABC’s Modern Family took over the lead from 9 to 9:30p at 3.7/10. CBS’ Criminal Minds took the top spot at 9:30p at 2.6/7. At 10p, there was a dead heat for first between CBS’ CSI and NBC’s Chicago Fire, both at 2.0/6. In second place was ABC’s Nashville at 1.7/5.

Elizabeth Tumulty has been named Executive Vice President, Affiliate Relations for the CBS Television Network, effective June 1. She will work closely with Diana Wilkin, President, Affiliate Relations, on multiple fronts including negotiating new affiliation contracts, coordinating with the CBS Affiliate Board and working on all affiliate-related initiatives. Tumulty last served as Executive Vice President, Network Distribution for The CW Network.
James Nuzzo has been promoted to Senior Executive Vice President, Operations and Business Planning of Cablevision Systems Corporation. Nuzzo, who last served as Executive Vice President, Business Planning, will provide operational oversight in the cable division and lead business planning efforts to ensure that the organization functions seamlessly as it executes plans designed to achieve Cablevision’s customer-focused goals.
Kurt Davis has been appointed Vice President, News Services for CBS News. He last served as Executive News Director at CBS affiliate KENS-TV in San Antonio, Texas. In his new role, Davis will lead CBS News’ satellite news gathering organization, which provides news and information to 200 CBS affiliates as well as to broadcasters around the world.
Jupiter Entertainment has expanded its New York development staff. Joining the company are Joe Murphy, Manager of Development, Karsyn Jarrett, Development Associate, and Erin Corbett, Development Coordinator. All will report to Harrison Land, Director of Development.
