Next Monday is NBC’s official Upfront presentation in New York, though this week the network ordered four pilots to series for the fall season, and renewed two others:
- Whitney – Multi-camera comedy from Universal Media Studios based on the stand-up comedy of Whitney Cummings and the roller-coaster ride a young couple goes through in a committed relationship.
- Up All Night (formerly known as the untitled Emily Spivey, Alpha Mom) – Single-camera comedy headlined by Christina Applegate offering an irreverent look at parenthood through the eyes of a sharp-tongued working mom (Applegate) and her stay-at-home husband (Will Arnett) as well as her opinioned parents. Maya Rudolph also co-stars. Universal Media Studios is producing.
- Smash – Musical drama based on an idea of Steven Spielberg’s centered on a group of people putting on a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe. Debra Messing and Katharine McPhee are starring; Universal Media Studios and DreamWorks TV are producing.
- Prime Suspect – American adaptation of the popular and award-winning British series starring Helen Mirren. The new version has Maria Bello in the lead role as a female detective who works in a tough New York precinct dominated by men.
- NBC also granted spy series Chuck a fifth season renewal for at least 13 episodes. Warner Bros. Television produces.
- Starting June 7, NBC wants more of its singing competition series The Voice and is expanding each live episode to two full hours. Through June 28, The Voice will air from 9p-11p following America’s Got Talent.
Over at CBS, the network renewed David Spade’s comedy Rules of Engagement for another season. Despite being moved around on CBS’ schedule, the sitcom has averaged 8.5 million viewers this current season. Happy Madison Productions produces in association with CBS Television Studios and Sony Pictures Television. CBS hosts its Upfront event May 18 in New York.
With a nod toward the changing direction of the PBS NEWSHOUR, long-time anchor Jim Lehrer announced yesterday he will not be part of the daily anchor rotation team beginning June 6. Lehrer, who has served as anchor or co-anchor for PBS’ flagship news broadcast for 36 years, said he will maintain an on-air presence on PBS NEWSHOUR especially on Friday evenings to moderate the weekly political analysis of Shields and Brooks, comprised of syndicated columnist Mark Shields and New York Times columnist David Brooks. Furthermore, Lehrer will continue to be involved in the editorial direction of PBS NEWSHOUR and the program’s producer, MacNeil/Lehrer Productions. In December 2009, the news broadcast transitioned from The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer to the PBS NEWSHOUR featuring several rotating anchors including Lehrer as well as Senior Correspondents Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff, Jeffrey Brown, Ray Suarez and Margaret Warner. The latter five senior correspondents will remain as hosts on a rotating basis.
A new edition of Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids launches on TLC July 8 at 10p. The latest chapter in TLC’s franchise will offer viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the bridesmaids’ salon at Bridals by Lori in Atlanta where sometimes difficult bridesmaids are searching for their perfect gowns. TLC ordered six 30m episodes. Prior to this new series premiere, TLC debuts the second season of Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta at 9p. NorthSouth Productions is behind both Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids and Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta.
Over-the-top bachelorette parties in Las Vegas are the focus of Oxygen’s new weekly fall series, Bachelorette Party: Las Vegas. The series shadows the VIP event planners working for the Palms Casino Resort as they prepare and execute outrageous bachelorette weekends for the brides and their bridal party. The series was developed by Gavin Polone of Pariah and PB&J Television.
