Cynopsis

05/13/05

Good morning.  It’s Friday, May 13, 2005 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Next week is the broadcasters’ Upfront Week.  Kicking off the festivities is NBC on Monday with their presentation at 3pm.  The rest of the schedule goes like this:

Monday:
3pm     NBC
Tuesday:

1030a   WB
4p      ABC
630p    Telemundo
Wednesday:

3p      CBS
Thursday:

And in the time honored tradition of guessing the fall schedules prior to the presentations, the rumors are swirling.  Remember – these are just rumors, nothing official from the networks as yet:
NBC:  Law & Order: Trial by Jury won’t be renewed but The Office will; while E-Ring, Fathom, Inconceivable and Book of Daniel are all new dramas; Thick & Thin and My Name is Earl will be two new sitcoms for the Peacock network.  Joey is expected to return with a new showrunner.
WB:  Not expected to be renewed is Summerland.  New drama series are Just Legal, Supernatural, and on the comedy side Modern Man, Misconception, Twins, Mindy and Brenda.
ABC: Commander in Chief, Invasion, The Catch and Pros and Cons, with sitcoms Sons & Daughters, Emily’s Reasons Why Not, Crumbs, Freddie and Hot Properties.  Potential cancellations for the network include My Wife & Kids (as it moves into the world of syndication), and 8 Simple Rules.
CBS: Quantico, American Crime, Love Monkey adn Threshold for the drama pickups; Flesh & Blood, Everything I Know About Men, Old Christine and How I Met Your Mother on the comedy side.
UPN:  Comedy series Everybody Hates Chris and Wingwoman.
FOX: drama series Bones, Prison Break (this one is confirmed), Head Cases and probably Reunion, along with sitcom The War at Home and Kitchen Confidential.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

MTV has ordered 10 eps of a new makeover series, this one called Trailer Fabulous, and as you may have guessed, it’s a makeover of the pre-fab homes. The show is scheduled to debut on MTV this summer with host Brooks Buford.

Sundance Channel has signed Alan Cumming to host its Friday night cult-movie block, Midnight Snack.  The new season debuts on July 1 at 1230a and features eccentric, outrageous and over-the-top films for the late-night crowd.  Cumming will introduce film, wrap up at the end and  preview next week’s film.

HBO’s Deadwood has added a new cast member – Brent Sexton will appear in the final two eps of this season, and assuming the show is picked up for a third season, will become a regular then. He will play the role of Tom Nuttall’s go-to guy.

Joining NBC’s L&O: Criminal Intent in a recurring role is Paula Garces as Tech Vizcarrando.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Joining the primetime lineup at FX on July 22 at 10p is a new drama series from Steven Bochco – Over There.  This will be FX’s third new series of the summer – the first two are 30 Days starting on June 15, and Rescue Me’s second season premiere on June 21.  Two new comedys are looking at an August debut – Starved and It’s Always Funny in Philadelphia.

Here are a couple of start dates for Fox’s summer schedule:

  • Fox will debut a new crime drama series this summer called The Inside, set to premiere on Wednesday, June 8 at 9p.
  • New reality series – Hell’s Kitchen with hell chef Gordon Ramsay starting on Monday, May 30 at 9p. Repeats of Nanny 911 will be its lead-in.
  • In July, an unscripted comedy series called Princes of Malibu debuts on Sunday, July 10 at 830p, after The Simpsons.
  • Also in July, So You Think You Can Dance from the American Idol gang will debut on July 20 at 8pm, though unlike Idol, this reality/competition will air just once a week.  Casting calls for this series are happening now – more info at fox.com
