Cynopsis: Kids!

5/11/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Blueprint Entertainment has hung out a new shingle with the formation of Blueprint Kids, a new division that will develop, produce and manage rights of kid’s and family centric programming.  Blueprint has tapped Frank Saperstein to serve as SVP/Animation and Children’s Programming for the new unit and related ancillary businesses.  Saperstein will be responsible for launching and building the new Blueprint Kids brand.  Blueprint is currently involved in two kid’s series including Shoebox Zoo, a co-production with the BBC) and the animated series Iggy Arbuckle, a co-production with national Geographic.

The Motion Picture Association of America said yesterday that it would consider all smoking as one of the criteria for assigning a rating for a movie; similarly to the way it looks at all violence and adult language for example.  The MPAA has come under increasing pressure to provide parents and moviegoers with more information about the content of movies, particularly those pictures that are perceived to glamorize smoking or situations where there is pervasive smoking.  Additionally, historical context will continue to guide ratings when it comes to smoking as well. Prior to this time the MPAA considered underage smoking when awarding ratings to movies.

To that end the MPAA and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have joined Hollywood Unfiltered, an entertainment industry-led voluntary initiative to educate and raise awareness within the industry of the public health consequences of depicting smoking in movies and TV.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Ed Jones, exec producer of Happy Feet, will produce Rainmaker Animation’s CGI animated movie Escape From Planet Earth.  Additionally, signing-on as Animation Director on the project is Steve Nichols; he was the lead animator on two Pirates of the Caribbean movies.  The film is Rainmaker’s first theatrical animated feature.  The Weinstein Co. is financing the animated comedy and will handle worldwide distribution.  Tony Leech, who also penned the script with Cory Edwards, the duo wrote Hoodwinked, will direct Escape From Planet Earth.  The movie revolves around Gary, an alien, who must overcome his own fears and self-doubt to lead an escape from Area 51, with other alien inmates including his wife and young daughter.

Diamond Dog, an indie family comedy feature film, begins shooting this week in Washington State.  Helmed by writer/director Mark Stouffer, who is also producing, the movie revolves around a tween boy who rescues a dog that, unbeknownst to the boy, belongs to a bumbling band of jewel thieves  guess where their ill-gotten booty is hidden.  The cast stars French Stewart, Kevin Farley, and Luke Benward (How To Eat Fried Worms), as well as Brittany Curran (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody), John Farley and Garrett Morris.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Chew on this, if you will.  This summer marks the 20th anniversary of Shark Week on Discovery Channel.  Now if that don’t make ya feel old, then try mentioning The Carson Show to someone under 40ish and see what you get.  Shark Week 2007 will run on Discovery Channel Sunday, July 29-Saturday, August 4, 9a-3a, and will feature eight new Shark Week premieres.  The folks at my place love Shark Week, so if you haven’t ever given it a try then go ahead and grab a bowl of goldfish (I’m thinking the cracker ones – but if you prefer live bait then by all means live-it up) and enjoy.

Boomerang celebrates Mother’s Day with a seven hour Wilma Flintstone Mother’s Day Marathon this Sunday, May 13, 12-7p.  The TV stunt will look at Wilma over the years, when she and Fred were dating, during her pregnancy, as a new mom and then as a grandmother.  The first five and half hours of the Wilma-thon features episodes of the animated series, which will be followed by the 90-minute animated feature Hollyrock-A-Baby (1993).

MARKETING/LICENSING

TV-Loonland has completed a textiles licensing deal for the animated preschool series Little Princess with S.A. Belltex N.V.  According to the deal terms Belltex will produce home textiles (e.g. pillow cases, sheets, towels etc) for retail across European territories including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Benelux, UK.  The series currently airs weekday mornings on the German kid’s channel Ki.Ka

Paramount Licensing Inc. (PLI) and Daewoo Motor Sales Corporation have inked a deal under which the two will the development of a Paramount Pictures theme park in South Korea.  The theme park would be located on property owned by Daewoo in Incheon, an hour outside Seoul.  Under the terms of the deal, Daewoo would be responsible for raiding funds for the development and construction of the proposed park; PLI will not be an investor.  A feasibility study, an $800 million theme park would be visited by 5+ million people annually. There are plans to build surrounding resorts, hotels and spas in addition to the park.

Chicago’s Adler Planetarium will open a weather-centric exhibit based on the CGI animated science/astronomy series, The Zula Patrol (52×30′), this June 2007.  The exhibit is currently scheduled to travel to planetariums and science museums nationwide through 2009. Created by Dr. Deborah Manchester, who will be at the International Licensing Show next month, the property will also expand into new consumer products categories including books, toys and activity kits, DVDs, and interactive games this year.  And as we previously told you, the series has been licensed to National Geographic Latin America for its new kid-targeted block Nat Geo and Me, as well as in South Korea to C4U Media. Additionally a science curriculum using the series is now available for classrooms.

Universal Studios Consumer Products is headed to Licensing International 2007 where the company will showcase licensing programs for several of its properties, for which it will also be looking additional licensees.

  • The Tale of Despereaux, the computer animated movie based on noted author Kate DiCamillo’s book of the same name.  Slated for a holiday 2008 release the property will be supported by a targeted licensing and merchandising program across a range of product categories and they are looking for more licensees.
  • The licensing effort for the property expands this fall 2007 with products from Playmates, the master toy partner, as well as from HarperCollins (books) Pressman Toys (games, puzzles and DVD games).  Available licensees opportunities include categories such as apparel, accessories, home furnishings, health & beauty, and consumables for launch in spring 2008.  Also releasing in 2007 are three DVD titles based on Universal Studios Family Productions’ new animated TV series, The Land Before Time (26×22′), which premiered this spring on Cartoon Network, followed by a new full-length movie on DVD that will drop for Holiday 2007.
  • Licensing opportunities are also available for Coraline, the stop-motion animated feature film produced in 3D (a first), across a range of categories as well as for promotional opportunities.  Slated for release in 4Q 2008, Coraline is based on Neil Gaiman’s young adult novel of the same name, and directed by Henry Selick.  A Laika Entertainment production in association with Pandemonium Films, Focus Features holds the worldwide distribution rights to Coraline.
  • Universal Studios Consumer Products Group is also looking for domestic and international licensees for the TV series Heroes across multiple categories, and Universal’s movie Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, which is directed by Guillermo del Toro and will be released August 2008.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Frank Saperstein joins Blueprint Entertainment as SVP/Animation and Children’s Programming for its new venture Blueprint Kids.  He will work out of the company’s LA offices and report to Chairman & CEO, John Morayniss.  A 20-year industry veteran, Saperstein was most recently Creative Director/Philippine Animation Studio Inc (PASI).  Previously, he was a producer/director and development consultant for VH1/MTVN, and served as producer/writer/director for Matinee Entertainment as well as working in various capacities on a range of kids series.
