Good morning. It’s Friday, March 9, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ESPN is kicking off its 17th season of MLS coverage on ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPN Deportes this season with the Portland/Philadelphia game at 9:30p on Monday. This year the channels will feature 20 regular season matches across the platforms. The game also marks the debut for ESPN’s new lead match analyst Taylor Twellman who will team with soccer play-by-play commentator Adrian Healey. Monica Gonzalez also joins the ESPN MLS team as the primary sideline reporter. The season opener will also feature an onsite studio presence with host Todd Grisham and analysts Alexi Lalas and Kasey Keller, who makes his first appearance as a studio analyst for ESPN. The season package of games is set to include eight games featuring the Los Angeles Galaxy, seven by the New York Red Bulls and six by the Seattle Sounders.
NBA games continue to drive ratings upticks for ESPN, which announced that through 36 games this season, the channel is seeing a 14% ratings boost for its coverage, averaging a 1.6 rating compared to a 1.4 last season. ESPN’s viewership is also up 6% (1,978,000 vs. 1,863,000), according to Nielsen. In addition, ABC’s NBA broadcasts are averaging a 3.9 rating through eight games for an 11% spike, versus last season’s 3.5 while the network’s viewership is up 9%.
Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott spoke with the media ahead of the conference tournament, discussing the 2013 television schedule. He noted that next year, ESPN will televise 44 games, FOX will host 22 and the remaining 125 will run on the forthcoming Pac-12 Network. For tournament action, next year will see ESPN running the quarterfinals, semis and championship game, while the Pac-12 Network will air the first round of games. Scott also told reporters that no decision had been made on moving the men’s tournament out of LA next year and over to the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
