~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

A new singing competition series, Duets is set to premiere this summer on ABC.  Kelly Clarkson, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Nettles and Robin Thicke will travel across the country seeking undiscovered talent.  Each star will select two singers to be become duet partners.  The duet partners will be on stage each week and perform in front of a live studio audience until in the end only one duet act wins a recording contract.  Duets is a production of Keep Calm and Carry On Productions.

Ford Motor Co. is teaming with NBC and Telemundo’s mun2 network to premiere new reality series Escape Routes on March 31.  The six-episode interactive reality series will feature six teams of two people participating in a road trip competition highlighting the new Ford Escape.  TV show personality Rossi Morreale will host the series which will air Saturdays at 8p on NBC and also on mun2, the bicultural cable network targeting young Latino Americans on Saturdays at 11p.

Daily daytime talk show The Talk was renewed for a third year by CBS for the 2012-2013 broadcast season keeping its current hosts, Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood and Aisha Tyler in place.  The new season will kick off in September.  Nationally, The Talk is averaging 2.16 million viewers in its present second season and posting a 1.0/6 rating/share with W25-54 and a 0.8 rating with W18-49.

New weekly late-night talk show Kathy starring reality star/comedian/actress Kathy Griffin opens on Bravo April 19 at 10p.  Kathy will air on Thursdays and cover the latest news and celebrity gossip in addition to Griffin sharing her unique stories in front of a studio audience.  Embassy Row produces Kathy for Bravo.  

Next month, A&E Network opens a new original real-life series, Flipped Off starring Russell Hantz (Survivor) as he delves into the competitive world of house flipping in Houston.  Flipped Off, produced by Departure Films for A&E, premieres April 9 at 10p.

BBC America gears up for the new original series premiere of Richard Hammond’s Crash Course April 16 at 10p, which follows the season 18 bow of Top Gear with a two-hour episode at 8p.  Hammond, familiar as host of Top Gear, travels the US in his newest series as he learns to operate America’s largest and most dangerous vehicles including a two-ton wrecking ball machine and the world’s most powerful fire engine dubbed The Striker among others.  Richard Hammond’s Crash Course is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions for BBC America. 

Season two of Tanked debuts April 14 at 9p on Animal Planet.  The new 20-episode season continues to follow Wayde King and Brett Raymer, co-owners of Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (ATM) in Las Vegas as they create extraordinary aquariums.  Nancy Glass Productions is behind the series for Animal Planet.

Beginning April 20, CMT debuts two new series and brings back music competition show The Singing Bee at 8p for a fourth season.  The Singing Bee hosted by Melissa Peterman is produced by The Gurin Company and JUMA Entertainment.  Half-hour reality series Melissa & Tye starring Melissa Rycroft and her husband Tye Strickland debuts at 9p. Melissa & Tye is from Ryan Seacrest Productions.  Then at 930p, new reality series Jennie Garth: Little Bit Country premieres starring former Beverly Hills 90210 star Jennie Garth as she and her family moves to a seven-acre farm in the countryside of Central California.  Jennie Garth: Little Bit Country is produced by Electus and 5×5.  All three shows will air on Friday nights.

Joseph Varet and Morgan Hertzan, co-founders of LXTV made a deal to acquire lifestyle network Plum TV, currently reaching 5 million affluent viewers in eight markets.  This purchase of Plum TV follows a bankruptcy auction in the Southern District of New York.  Hertzan and Varet will serve as Co-Presidents with Hertzan based in New York and Varet in Los Angeles.  Plum TV will operate as a national network with the goal to expand distribution via digital, television and out-of-home media.  The focus of Plum TV will remain on home, travel, food and wellness.  Plum TV is presently distributed on cable systems in Miami, Aspen, Vail, Telluride, the Hamptons, Sun Valley, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, via PlumTV.com and on Plum TV’s on demand iPhone app.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Comedy Central ordered three new original series: The Burn stars Comedy Central’s roastmaster Jeff Ross as he makes fun of weekly hot topics and public figures with a group of his peers; Review with Forrest MacNeil is a scripted half-hour comedy starring Andrew Daly as a critic who takes aim at intense real-life experiences in lieu of food or cinema; and Nathan for You is helmed by Nathan Fielder playing a version of himself as he offers advice to real people and struggling businesses.  Ross, Daly and Fielder will all serve as EPs of their respective series.  Mike Gibbons and Tagline Television’s Willie Mercer and Amy Zvi also are on board The Burn; Charlie Siskel on Review with Forrest MacNeil; and Michael Koman and Dave Kneebone on Nathan for You.

ABC’s comedy pilot American Judy starring Judy Greer tapped Ken Marino (Party Down) to co-star as her husband, Dean. 

Beginning next week on Thursday’s episode, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger will appear on FOX’s American Idol as an image advisor to the contestants.  Hilfiger will offer advice to the finalists on how to transform their style into pop star status. 

Fresh off her co-starring role in George Clooney’s film The Descendants, Amara Miller joins NBC’s White House comedy pilot, 1600 Penn.  Miller will play Marigold, the tough youngest daughter of the POTUS (Bill Pullman) and half of a pair of 13-year old twins. 

Australian actress Peta Sergeant was cast in The CW’s pilot The Selection.  She will play Gaia Woods.  Warner Bros. Television is producing.

ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager adds Cierra Ramirez as a new series regular, cites THR.  Ramirez will play Kathy, a new freshman who enrolls at Grant High who is six months pregnant and wants to give up her baby for adoption. Ramirez joins the production this week.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX saw a nice bump in the ratings on Wednesday among A18-49 at 5.7/16, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, FOX’s American Idol won with a 5.4/16 followed by CBS’ Survivor: One World at 3.2/9.  American Idol on FOX held supreme through 9p at 6.1/16 and ABC’s comedies Modern Family and Happy Endings came next at an average at 2.2/6.  CBS had a turn in the winner’s seat at 10p with its CSI repeat at 1.8/5 followed by Univision’s La Que No Podia Amar at 1.6/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Film/TV executive Paul Rich established a new film and television distribution company, BoPaul Media Worldwide (BMW) which will launch at MIPTV in Cannes, France April 1-4, 2012.  The company begins with a library of more than 800 films and 150 hours of television series programming.  Paul was formerly SVP at ICAP Media/Moving Pictures.  BMW will be located at MIPTV stand 11.22 (#34), 1st floor, Palais and its headquarters is in Los Angeles.

Reality production company A. Smith & Co. Productions bolstered its production team by adding four full-time producers: Lindsey Kugler, Brian Richardson, Mark Rowland and Anthony Storm will all become Executive Producers working on various A. Smith & Co. productions.  They will also be charged with development new projects for the company. 

Former Director/Development and Original Series at Fuse, Holly Hines takes on a new position at FremantleMedia North America (FMNA) as VP/Scripted Development, effective immediately.  Holly will be integral in developing new scripted projects for the company while reporting to Tony Optican, SVP/Scripted Programming. 

New York-based audio post-production house Sound Lounge said Rob DiFondi is rejoining the company effective immediately.  Rob is an experienced mixer and began his career in production and post-production at Sound Lounge in 1999.  For the last three years, Rob has been a mixer at audioEngine.

Rural Media Group, Inc. hired Terry Sekel as SVP/Advertising Sales and Andrew Eder as VP/Sales.  Terry will have oversight on sales strategy for general market advertising while expanding the company’s revenue base.  Terry will be based at his office in New Jersey. Andrew will focus on developing multi-platform opportunities for advertisers looking to connect with the company’s consumers.   Andrew will be based from his office in Connecticut.
