Good Morning, it’s Friday, March 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

DirecTV and Major League Baseball finalized a seven-year, $700 million agreement for the out-of-market “Extra Innings” package of games that is potentially a win-win for both the satellite service and cable. The deal includes a provision that allows cable operators to match the terms DirecTV agreed to, although the price is considered prohibitively high for operators with much smaller footprints.
 
 

~MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS~
 

MTV Network’s Nick.com generated almost 17 million unique users making February a record month, while virtual world site Nicktropolis surpassed 1 million unique users during the month. Broadband video platform TurboNick generated more than 77 million streams, a year-on-year increase of over 500%. New content planned for this month includes interactive features built around Nickelodeon’s 20th Annual Kids Choice Awards on March 31. Nickelodeon also picked up its first scripted series that will incorporate kid-created content. ICarly will feature a lead character (Drake & Josh‘s Miranda Cosgrove) who hosts her own web-grown show which kids can post their own original content to via Nicktropolis or TurboNick.
 
The Associated Press is updating its video platform to allow affiliates to upload, tag, syndicate and embed local ads to the clips they syndicate through the network. The syndication system, built by Microsoft’s MSN, had been planned since the launch of AP’s video network last year.
 
Sony Computer Entertainment announced Home, its foray into the real-time virtual world business tied to the network PlayStation 3 platform. Players create 3D avatars of themselves to mill around within a customizable virtual world.  Hook up and take your friend back to your virtual apartment, decorated with uploaded pictures, video and other digital media content that resides on the PS3 hard drive. Show them your trophy wall, documenting the beasts you’ve slayed in the gaming world. An optional headset enables real time audio and video chat. Sony has about 500,000 registered users for the internet-connected PlayStation Network in North America.
 
AT&T announced a deal with World Wrestling Entertainment to bring WWE-themed video clips, ringtones, voice tones and graphics to AT&T/Cingular Wireless subscribers. The WWE Mobile content will be available a la carte, as part of the $19.99 Media Max bundle, or as a premium “WWE Ringside” video package for an extra $4.99 a month.
 
CSPAN is changing its copyright policy to allow the “noncommercial” copying, sharing and posting of events it covers sponsored by Congress or any U.S. Agency, which accounts for about half of its airtime. Its aim is to increase political dialogue and empower bloggers and citizen journalists, provided they credit C-SPAN when sourcing the content.  The announcement comes after CSPAN made news for demanding the removal of its clips from the personal blog of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
 
National Geographic Digital Media launched a new site http://kids.nationalgeographic.com targeting kids and tweens. The site features video clips, games, stories, activities and several interactive segments such as “My Page” where visitors can customize a background with animals and invite friends to check out their creations.
 
The BBC has attracted about 250,000 views from YouTube since announcing its partnership with the site last week. BBC Corp. internet controller Tony Ageh said planned BBC iPlayer has been slowed by the BBC trust, which has been careful to consider the effect free online television content will have on the commercial marketplace in the UK.
 

~TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

Movie Gallery acquired the technology, network operations and customer base of MovieBeam, an online on-demand move service that was split off from Walt Disney Co. in January 2006. Movie Gallery has more than 4,600 Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video stores while MovieBeam serves more than 31 metro areas in the U.S. It delivers up to 10 new movies a week to subscribers. The acquisition is expected to cost less than $10 million in 2007 but the actual terms of the deal were not disclosed.
 
Network executives defended their strategies at the Online Publisher’s Association’s Forum for the Future conference in London, according to a paidcontent.org posting. Demanding that YouTube take downs CBS News clips is good for consumers because CBS is quick to replace them with authorized versions on its own sites, often of better quality, said CBSNews.com SVP/GM Betsy Morgan. The ad-supported model is a winner in terms of driving business and increasing usage, according to ABC Digital Media EVP Albert Cheng. Putting full episodes up online is actually helping viewership rather than cannibalizing it, claimed George Kliavkoff, NBC‘s new chief digital officer.
 
Hallmark Channel signed a multiyear agreement with Dish Network for carriage on its AT250 package of channels. The deal increases the channel’s distribution to over 80 million subscribers.
 
MyNetworkTV officially dropped its status as the only pure HD broadcast network. Cutting back its HD-shot novellas to two nights a week, MNTV will replace them in the schedule with International Fight League matches, movies and specials, broadcast in a mix of standard and high def. 
 

~DIGITAL ADVERTISING~
 

Cable network executives got a peek at eBay’s new auction-based electronic TV ad buying and selling system this week, designed to simplify the process of placing buys across multiple networks. Some networks have bristled at losing control of their ad inventory to such a system and have complained of being left out of the development process thus far. CAB chief Sean Cunningham
 
 

~TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
 

Internet advertising revenues totaled $16.8 billion for 2006, a 34 percent increase over 2005’s total of $12.5 billion, according to Internet Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Typically strong forth quarter revenues totaled nearly $4.8 billion, a 32 percent bump over the previous year. A full IAB/PwC report is due out next month.
 

~EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
PBS appointed John McCoskey its first Chief Technology Officer. A former Comcast Media Center VP, John will oversee broadcast technology and IT systems for PBS, including distribution systems development and the implementation of a new digital rights management system. He will begin the job April 2, 2007 and report to PBS COO Wayne Godwin.
 
WCVB in Boston named Neil Ungerleider to the newly created position of Manager, Digital and Multimedia. He will train NewsCenter 5 reporters and producers as multiplatform journalists.
 
Web-based video search platform ClipBlast! named Rhaz Zeisler to Vice President, Product Development and Chief Creative Director. She has twenty years of experience in creative development, production, and web technology integration in the entertainment and multimedia sectors.

Social search platform Searchles released Serachles TV, a video player that creates mashup files from multiple sources using dynamic syndication.  Go to www.searchles.com and click on MyTV. Use the menu to name a new channel and embed files from YouTube, MySpace, Grouper, blip.TV or other video sites and mash them together. You can choose to embed your creations to players on any of these sites.  For example, someone spliced together clips from an Office Space trailer and turned it into a thriller. Great stuff.
