Good morning. It’s Friday, March 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The Mountain West Conference and ESPN are locking in a seven-year media rights deal for the network to televise up to 22 football games and 25 men’s basketball games a year, according to ESPN.com. The deal will boost revenue for the conference to $18 million a year, or $116 million for the life of the deal. Of the 22 games set for ESPN, the deal will include all six of Boise State’s home games.
Turner Sports opened the books on its Sunday MLB on TBS plans for the season, featuring a 26-game regular season schedule that starts Sunday, April 7, at 1p with a Yankees/Tigers matchup. For the first two months of the season, the slate will feature three appearances by the Yankees (April 7, April 28 and May 26), and two each for the Dodgers, Red Sox, Braves, Blue Jays and Rays. Early action will be called by talent that includes Ernie Johnson, Brian Anderson and analysts Ron Darling, Dennis Eckersley, Cal Ripken, Jr., and John Smoltz.
NBC reports that the Chicago Blackhawks’ historic 24-game point streak continued to deliver audiences, with Wednesday’s telecast of the team’s win over the Avalanche delivering 720,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. That is up 57% over the 2012 time period average and ranks as the ninth most-watched regular-season game in the network’s history. In Chicago, the telecast pulled a 7.0 local rating, the market’s highest ever for an NHL regular- season game on NBC Sports Network.
FOX Soccer’s telecast of Real Madrid’s victory and elimination of Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday ranked as the most-watched Champions League match and most-watched weekday telecast of any kind in the channel’s history, according to Nielsen. Around 520,000 viewers saw The Red Devils ousted by The Galacticos on its home pitch. The match also averaged 582,000 viewers on FOX Deportes, marking the network’s second-highest Round of 16 match since the network acquired the property back in 2009.
The NFL is bringing back its Business of Music Camp for a second run, announcing that twenty current and former NFL players will get a crash course on how to break into the music industry at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in New York. The program will run from March 18-21 as part of a collaboration between NFL Player Engagement and the Clive Davis Institute in NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Players are set to include the likes of Sammy Davis, Eric Heitman and Bryant McKinnie.
With race-centric SPEED now evolving into FOX Sports 1, NASCAR told The Sporting News that the organization still has no plans to start its own cable channel. “We still discuss it from time to time about having our own network – we still think about it and throw it around a little bit every once in a while,” NASCAR Vice President of Broadcasting Steve Herbst said in the report. “But I think what we’ll find on FS1 is a consistent, strong, and maybe even an increased level of NASCAR programming as compared to Speed today.”
The NHL Players’ Association gave its blessing to the league’s realignment plans and the proposal will now undergo a vote from the league’s owners to implement it. a thumbs up to the league’s proposed realignment plan.
CBS Sports Network launches coverage of college basketball conference championship week on Saturday with the Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship Semifinals starting at 2p and the Championship game set for Wednesday at 7:30p. The channel will also deliver the Reese’s Mountain West Basketball Championship Quarterfinals starting at 3p on Wednesday. Rich Cellini and Andrew Catalon call the action, along with analysts Doug Gottlieb, Steve Lappas and reporter Lauren Gardner. The Conference USA Basketball Championship Quarterfinals start the next day on Thursday at 1p.
The network also announced that it will telecast documentary special The Miracles: The 1988 Kansas Jayhawks, looking at the team’s resurrection under head coach Larry Brown and star player Danny Manning. The program runs Monday at 8p.
The mayor of Los Angeles notified the USOC that the city is interested in bidding to host the 2024 Olympic Games, according to Reuters. Los Angeles has hosted the Games twice, once in 1932 and again in 1984.

The NCAA, Turner Live Events and Coke Zero revealed that Muse would headline with Flo Rida, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Ludacris for the 2013 NCAA Big Dance Concert Series in Atlanta, in conjunction with the 2013 NCAA Men’s Final Four. The NBA’s second Chinese New Year Celebration reached a total of 107 million fans on television and digital media, according to the league, to mark an increase of more than 11% compared to last year’s first-ever celebration. NBA Chinese New Year Celebration 2013 featured a record 23 live games over eight days from Feb. 7-14 with all 24 NBA teams that played on Chinese New Year’s Eve wearing specially designed Chinese New Year shooting shirts from adidas. The games were broadcast and streamed via NBA television partners in China which included CCTV 5, BTV, CBN Ningxia Satellite TV, GDTV, Fujian TV, Sina, Tencent, Fox Sports Taiwan, Elta Taiwan, Videoland Taiwan and Now TV Hong Kong.
J.M. Smucker Co. has signed on to serve as a sponsor for the 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games, according to the AP. The U.S. Olympic Committee said the company brands Folgers, Jif, Smucker’s and Smucker’s Uncrustables sandwiches will be featured at the events in Sochi, Russia in 2014, as well as in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016.
Marketing agency CSE announced that it is activating a tour for client Aflac that will bring Aflac’s Heisman Trophy, NASCAR and PGA TOUR sponsorship programs around the country with business-to-business experiential events. The PGA experience will include a golf simulator & hole-in-one competition. The NASCAR experience offers a Carl Edwards replica racing car while guests of the Heisman Trophy experience can take a picture with the coveted trophy. The tours start this week with stops in Las Vegas (NASCAR), Miami (PGA) and Jacksonville (Heisman Trophy Tour).
NCAA.com, managed by Turner Sports, offered a glimpse to early results from voting for the All-Time March Madness Players, Team and Moment as part of the season-long celebration of 75 years of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Final results will be revealed exclusively on NCAA.com on Friday, April 5. Players in the top 30 right now include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Bobby Hurley and Ralph Sampson. Top five teams in voting include: Indiana University 1975-1976; University of North Carolina 1981-1982; Duke University 1991-1992; University of Kentucky 1995-1996; and University of Kentucky 2011-2012.
NFL.com will offer more insight to the upcoming NFL Draft with a new weekly show that starts today and streams every Friday at 10 on the site. The online series, NFL.com LIVE: Mock Draft Weekly, will offer mock drafts from NFL.com’s roster of analysts and reporters while dissecting the major needs for all 32 teams, and focusing on specific landing spots for the top prospects leading up the 2013 NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York City April 25-27.

Bloomberg Sports announced its BSports Match Analysis service, designed to offer updated projections every minute while all matches are in progress in the five major European football leagues. The platform allows soccer fans and bettors to see the odds change on all aspects of live play, as time and match events change the probabilities of different outcomes and statistical situations.
