Lifetime Television set the premiere day of Drop Dead Diva for June 6 at 9p, returning with 13 new one-hour episodes. Produced by Sony Pictures Television, season two is currently in production in Atlanta and the opening episode will feature guest star Paula Abdul reprising her role as “Judge Paula Abdul.” Repeats of season one will commence on Lifetime April 11 following new episodes of Army Wives at 11p and 12a respectively until May 23. Also, on May 30, the network will present a full day marathon of Drop Dead Diva episodes from 10a to 11p.
National Geographic Channel (NGC) explores the universe in a new six-episode series Known Universe, premiering April 1 at 10p. The production of each episode allows viewers to feel they are part of the scene as the series delves into fascinating mysteries of science using computer animation, time-lapse sequences and more. Base Productions, Inc. produces the series for NGC.
VERSUS opens its first live daily show titled The Daily Line starting April 5 at 6p. The one-hour weeknight show, hosted by Liam McHugh, Jenn Sterger, Reese Waters and Rob DeAngelis and based in New York, will give an in-depth perspective on controversial stories as well as topical breaking news.
ABC is bringing back its summer reality shows True Beauty and Wipeout for additional runs. True Beauty, premiering its second season May 31 at 10p is produced by Tyra Banks and Ashton Kutcher and follows 10 beautiful contestants who are judged for their morals, not their looks. Produced by Endemol, Wipeout returns to ABC’s schedule with a third season on June 22.
The CW has renewed Smallville from Tollin/Robbins Productions for an additional season, returning this fall 2010 for its tenth season. For its ninth season, the Superman drama has averaged a 1.4/5 among A18-49 and a 1.5/6 among the young key demo of A18-34. Other CW series renewed for additional seasons include Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210, Supernatural and America’s Next Top Model.

Liberman Broadcasting, Inc. (LBI Media) made an affiliate deal with Applebaum Television to air its Hispanic network, Estrella TV on KSBT-TV in the Santa Barbara market. To date, Estrella TV now reaches more than 73% of the US Hispanic population.
ABC introduces a new untitled reality/competition show from BBC Worldwide Productions, putting celebrities on ice skates. The new show, from the same team behind Dancing with the Stars, will feature six celebrities working with professional ice skaters as they train and dance on ice. BBC Worldwide Productions developed the concept based on the BBC’s Strictly Ice Dancing format popular in the UK. Izzie Pick, VP/Programming Development, BBC Worldwide Productions and previous co-executive producer with DWTS will executive produce and Michael Brooks, producer on DWTS will be co-executive producer.
Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO) ushered in a new eight-episode unscripted series Help Me, Martha! with Mark Burnett Productions during an upfront event held at company headquarter in New York City yesterday. The 60m show will follow Martha and various home and lifestyle experts as they solve challenges involving home, work and play. Mark Burnett also works with Martha on her daytime syndicated show The Martha Stewart Show.
Mark Burnett may also be working with Sarah Palin, former governor of Alaska, as the pair shopped a reality show project to various networks in Hollywood this week. The project is described as a docu-drama about Alaska which will feature the Palin clan. Palin and Burnett met with ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC.
Debra Messing will be back on TV as she headlines the ABC pilot Wright vs. Wrong, as well as executive produces the project. The plot is about Evelyn Wright (Messing), a conservative pundit who tries to maintain her public image while she copes with her insecurities. Sony TV and Tantamount are producing. Stephanie Weir is writing the project and executive producing, and other executive producers include Tantamount’s Mitch Hurwitz, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum.
Two actresses join ABC pilots: Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty) is taking on the lead for the drama pilot True Blue while Alicia Witt landed the female lead on the drama pilot Edgar Floats, cites THR.
Ryan Devlin, currently appearing on ABC’s Cougar Town, takes on a starring role opposite William Shatner in the CBS comedy pilot S**t My Dad Says based on the popular Twitter account. Devlin will play the son to Shatner’s opinionated dad character.
Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: As the February Sweep came to a close, FOX hit all the right notes Wednesday night delivering an 8.5/23 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s American Idol won with an 8.2/23 with UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe next at 1.9/6 and ABC’s comedies Modern Family and The Middle averaging a close third position at 1.9/5. FOX followed one good turn with another as American Idol was #1 at 9p with 8.7/22 and CBS’ Criminal Minds placed second at 3.4/9. Then at 10p, CBS had a turn in #1 with CSI: NY at 3.0/9 though NBC’s Law & Order: SVU was just a step behind at 2.9/8.

Gospel Music Channel (GMC) named Tina Thompson as Programming Manager. Tina joins from MTV Networks where she has worked for the past eight years and the last four as Programming Manager. Congratulations Tina!!!
Former AOL executive Milissa Tarquini was hired by Scripps Networks as VP/User Experience and Design for the company’s flourishing digital media unit. Milissa will head the digital team who specializes in user experience, interaction design and visual design. Based in New York, Milissa will report to Jen Goforth, SVP/Operation, Scripps Networks’ Digital Media Group.
Social marketing agency Mr. Youth based in New York, added Ethelbert Williams as VP/Brand Development for the company’s newly created Midwest office in Chicago. Ethelbert will be in charge of heading client brand development and interaction for a variety of consumer products, retail and technology services businesses. He will report to Doug Akin, Managing Partner/Chief Engagement Officer.
David Bernath was promoted to EVP/Program Strategy and Multiplatform Programming with Comedy Central. David will continue to supervise the network’s program scheduling and acquisitions teams, as well as the network’s content for all digital platforms. Based in New York City, David reports to Michele Ganeless, President, Comedy Central.
Cross MediaWorks named Van Mylar as VP/Charitable Groups Media where he is involved with the humanitarian sector within the media industry, working with non-profit organizations. Based in Atlanta, Van reports jointly to Marc Krigsman, CEO and Larry Rubin, COO.
Sara Timmins advanced to AE with Retirement Living TV, in charge of distribution for the network in the Northeast and Southeast in addition to carrying on growth with Comcast, Charter and NCTC systems.
