Good morning, it’s Friday, March 30, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Ronald Burkle and Eli Broad have sweetened their offer for Tribune offering a deal based on an employee stock ownership plan and are offering $34 a share – a full $1 dollar more than the Sam Zell deal offer, according to a report this morning in The New York Times. The biggest difference between the two plans, however, is Sam Zell was planning on putting in $300 million of his own cash; while Burkle and Broad have offered to put in $500 million. Additionally, Zell’s plan would buy out the Chandler family, Tribune’s largest shareholders; it’s not readily clear how the Burkle-Broad deal would manage that aspect. At the end of the day, were Tribune to accept the 11th hour offer, the two billionaires would end up owning 40% of Tribune, while the remaining 60% would be owned by Tribune’s employees.
Tonight’s Finales:
MTV2: Crank Yankers at 10p, Celebrity Deathmatch at 1030p
Discovery Communications yesterday announced it would buy the 25% ownership stake in Discovery held by Cox Communications in exchange for $1.275 billion in cash, and the Travel Channel and its related business pieces. It is likely Cox will spin the network and put it up for sale. The end result for Discovery is it will now be owned by Liberty Media with a now 66% stake, and Advance/Newhouse with 33% ownership. The deal is expected to close in early third qtr 2007.
Just one day after NBC and the Miss Universe Organization came to terms on Miss USA and Miss Universe, CMT announces it will not continue to carry the third tiara in this mix – the Miss America pageant beyond 2007. In a statement provided by CMT, Brian Philips, EVP/GM said, “As a network, CMT is now in a more aggressive position to build off of existing series and launch more original series and music-centric special events. We will always be proud supporters of the Miss America Organization and as such, we plan to make an ongoing commitment to their scholarship fund to assist in their future success.”
ABC has pulled the plug on Great American Dream Vote and host Donny Osmond after just two episodes. The show debuted last Tuesday after a DAncing with the Stars lead-in provided it with a 4.7 A18-49 lead-in, and Vote fell to a disturbing 1.9. In its regular time period on Wednesday at 8p, it delivered a 1.5 A18-49 rating. Replacing the hour next Wednesday will be two back-to-back episodes of George Lopez show. At this point, no decisions have been made for the longer term on what will fill the hour.
Two program updates from Fox –

And just when you think you’ve gotten used to the new lineup, Fox will switch it again on Sunday, June 10: 7p War at Home; 730p King of the Hill; 8p THe Simpsons; 830p American Dad; 9p Family Guy; and 930p The Loop returns.
- Drive, scheduled to launch on April 15 at 8p, will split its season and end after the first six episodes on May 7th, and then pick up again later on in the season with 7 more episodes.

WEDNESDAY – A18-49 Analysis: Fox delivered the win on Wednesday night among A18-49 by posting an overall 6.0/17, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p Bones on Fox earned a time period winning 3.6/11, four share points ahead of both Jericho on CBS and America’s Next Top Model on CW. Among the slightly younger and decidedly female W18-34 demo, America’s Next Top Model won the 8p hour with a 4.5 rating. At 9p American Idol Results Show handily took the top prize with an 10.7/28 from 9-930p, and ‘Til Death at 930 led with a 6.3/16, doubling the closest competition share – CBS’ Criminal Minds. Friday Fun Fact: If you put all the streets in NYC in a straight line, they would stretch to Japan.
This Day in History: 1962 – After 5 years, Jack Paar left his successful late night television talk show, walking away from a salary of $250,000 and an estimated audience of eight-million people. For a time, fill-in hosts were used, including the one who would win the position as host of “The Tonight Show”, Johnny Carson. (Wait until you see what Monday’s fact is!)
