~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Canadian hospital drama Saving Hope is joining NBC’s schedule this summer.  NBC ordered 13 episodes of the drama starring Erica Durance and Michael Shanks.  Production begins in Toronto on March 12.  Saving Hope also launches this summer on Canadian broadcaster CTV as well as NBC.  The drama is produced by Ilana C Frank Films with Entertainment One, in association with CTV and NBC.  Entertainment One will deficit finance Saving Hope in addition to handling the international distribution across all media including television, DVD/Blu-ray, VOD and digital.

A new five-part anthology series, Pacific Heartbeat as announced by Pacific Islanders in Communication (PIC) documents the people, cultures, languages, music and current issues of the real Pacific.  The series will debut in primetime on the WORLD Channel April 1 at 9p.  The WORLD Channel is available in major markets across the US including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia and Dallas.  Starting May 1, Pacific Heartbeat will be available to public television stations nationwide to celebrate Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month.  The series will be available to public television in partnership with PBS Hawaii and is presented and distributed by American Public Television.

Beginning next Monday, morning show Fox & Friends on Fox News Channel (FNC) will expand earlier by an extra hour.  Fox & Friends will now air live between 5a and 6a with the name Fox & Friends First.  The show’s fourth hour will be anchored by rotating FNC personalities including Heather Childers, Dave Briggs, Ainsley Earhardt and Heather Nauert among others.  This new hour of Fox & Friends First will replace the repeats presently airing in the time period. 

New original adventure culinary competition series No Kitchen Required debuts on BBC America April 3 at 10p.  The series follows three professional chefs as they are dropped in remote locales where they must work with the locals to hunt and fish as well as forage for ingredients to cook meals that will be judged by the communities.  The three chefs are New York restaurateur Michael Psilakis, first ever Chopped Grand Champion chef Madison Cowan and elite personal chef and New Zealander Kayne Raymond.  The threesome will be dropped in ten locations worldwide including Dominica, New Zealand, Belize, Fiji, Chiang Dao Thailand, Koh Lanta Thailand, Hawaii, New Mexico, Louisiana and Florida.  No Kitchen Required is hosted by British personality Dr. Shini Somara who also joins the chefs on their adventures.  The series is a Notional production for BBC America. 

Season two of Nothing Personal: Murder For Hire opens March 7 at 9p on Investigation Discovery.  The series, hosted by actor and true-crime enthusiast Steve Schirripa (The Sopranos) relates twisted stories of betrayal.  The second season has six episodes produced by Cineflix (NP2) Inc. in association with Investigation Discovery.

Travel Channel brings back two returning series with back-to-back half-hour episodes on April 5.  Sand Masters opens a 13-episode run at 8p and 830p highlighting a group of artists who travel the world creating huge sand masterpieces.  Following at 9p and 930p, a new 13-episode season of Truck Stock USA debuts featuring Midway Truck Stop owner Joe Bechtold whose goal it is to make his truck stop a great American tourist attraction.  For Travel Channel, Sand Masters is produced by Painless Entertainment and Truck Stop USA is produced by Leftfield Pictures.

Upfront 2012 Update:  Syfy will present its upfront at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on April 24 at 630p.  The event will feature various celebrity “Igniters” from the disciplines of business innovation, music and culinary arts. 

Programming Notes:  Tonight, BIO Channel will honor the life of the late Davy Jones of The Monkees fame in two one-hour specials: Biography: The Monkees at 8p with an encore at 10p and BIO Remembers: Davy Jones at 9p.

On Sunday, Me-TV will air three classic episodes from The Brady Bunch and Love, American Style also featuring the late pop idol Davy Jones: The Brandy Bunch “Getting Davy Jones” at 1230p; Love, American Style “Love and The Elopement” at 1p; and Love, American Style “Love and The Model Apartment” at 130p.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Independent media company, Acorn Media Group acquired a 64% stake in Agatha Christie Limited from Chorion.  The deal gives Acorn Media a majority ownership of the mystery author’s expansive works including more than 80 novels and short stories, 19 plays, a film library of nearly 40 TV films featuring such characters as Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple among others.  The Agatha Christie family retains 36% holdings with Mathew Prichard, Agatha Christie’s grandson, continuing as Chairman of Agatha Christie Limited.

Bounce TV launched in Baltimore this week on WUTB-TV as part of an agreement between Bounce TV and FOX Television Stations. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

National Geographic Channel is commissioning a four-part series from Pioneer Productions titled Storm City.  The series will look at the science behind destructive weather forces as a team of scientists will recreate what happens during earthquakes, extreme winds, avalanches and floods.  The series is being filmed in 3D though will air in 2D later this year on NGC.

ITV Studios America, the US-based production unit of ITV Studios in the UK, forged an overall deal with David Leepson via his production company Leepson Bounds Entertainment.  Leepson is a six-time Emmy Award winning producer, director, showrunner and executive.  Leepson Bounds Entertainment has two current pilots on tap for FUEL TV. 

Star of The Princess Bride, Cary Elwes landed a role on ABC’s comedy pilot Prairie Dogs.  Elwes will play Rams, the mysterious leader of the design department in the company where the main character works.  Rams is also described as an eccentric German who wears turtlenecks and kilts. 

David Arquette will next appear in the ABC comedy pilot The Smart One, about a sister named Jude (Portia de Rossi) who goes to work for her less brainy though more popular sister Candy (Malin Akerman).  Arquette will play Candy’s husband. 

Further casting news for ABC includes Elizabeth Perkins cast as Sarah Chalke’s mother in the comedy pilot How to Live With Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life.  The plot is about Polly (Chalke) a recently divorced single mom who moves back in with her eccentric parents, Elaine (Perkins) and Max. 

Also for ABC, the untitled drama project from Roland Emmerich handed a role to Broadway star Laila Robins, reports THR.  The project is about Carter (Max Thieriot) an astrophysics grad student in New York who finds out he is the chosen one to destroy the forces of evil.  Robins will play Angelica Teras, the elegant and strong-willed wife of Senator Teras (Linus Roache) who has an eye on the White House.  ABC Studios and Mark Gordon Co. are producing.

Drama pilot Americana for ABC tapped Tiffany Hines (Nikita) to play Shane Kelly, a beautiful medical student and Alice’s (Ashley Greene) best friend, per THR

CBS’ comedy pilot from Will & Grace creators, David Kohan and Max Mutchnick is close to finalizing a deal with David Krumholtz to play opposite Michael Urie in Partners.  The comedy is about two architects  Charlie (Krumholtz) who is straight and Louis (Urie) who is gay and whose friendship has lasted longer than their other romantic relationships.  Charlie ends up proposing to his girlfriend (Sophia Bush) which makes Louis neurotic in his attempts at being supportive. 

Natalie Zea (Justified) joins the untitled drama project for FOX about a deranged serial killer, Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) who creates his own cult of murderers using technology.   Kevin Bacon plays the retired FBI profiler who is hunting down Carroll.  Zea will play Carroll’s ex-wife. 

Additionally for FOX, newcomer Saxon Sharbino will star in the untitled Karyn Usher pilot as Jane Forsythe, an orphaned 14-year old girl who finds a mentor and surrogate father in a mysterious rogue agent. 

Stand-up comedian-turned-actor Dane Cook is joining NBC’s comedy pilot titled Next Caller Please.  The single-camera series is about Cam Doherty (Cook), a brash alpha male DJ and his feminist co-host set in the office of a satellite radio station.  Collette Wolfe has been cast as his co-host Stella and Joy Osmanski will play Winnie, Stella’s producer.

Former The Cosby Show mom Phylicia Rashad landed a role in NBC’s drama pilot Do No Harm, the contemporary take on the Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde story.  Rashad will play Dr. Vanessa Young, the chief of surgery and boss of Jeffrey Kohl (Steven Pasquale), a brilliant neurosurgeon who struggles with his dangerous alter-ego.  Universal Television is producing. 

Matthew Perry may rejoin NBC with a lead role in the single-camera comedy pilot Go On.  Perry will play a charming sportscaster who tries to move on after a personal tragedy through the help of mandatory therapy sessions.  Scott Silveri (Friends) will write and serve as EP. 

American Horror Story creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk said Jessica Lange will return to the FX drama this fall for season two.  Lange won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award for her role in American Horror Story.  Production on season two commences in late July for a planned mid-October premiere on FX. 

Former Kyle XY actor Jean-Luc Bilodeau landed a lead role in ABC Family’s upcoming comedy series Baby Daddy scheduled to premiere this summer.  Furthermore, Melissa Peterman was promoted to series regular.  Bilodeau will play Ben, who suddenly becomes father to a baby girl when she is left at his doorstep by an ex-girlfriend.  He decides to raise the baby with help from his mother (Peterman) and his brother Danny (Derek Theler) and his friends Tucker (Tahj Mowry) and Riley (Chelsea Kane).  Production on Baby Daddy launches this spring and will be filmed in front of a live audience in Los Angeles.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX held its top berth position among A18-49 on Wednesday at 5.0/13, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX had the top ratings at 8p with American Idol at 4.8/14 and CBS’ Survivor: One World was second at 2.9/8.  FOX’s American Idol ratings ticked up a bit during 9p to a 5.2/13 and ABC’s comedies Modern Family and Happy Endings followed at an average of 3.8/10.  At 10p, it was CBS’ turn to gain control of the A18-49 viewers with CSI at 2.6/7 and ABC’s Revenge was not too far behind at 2.4/6.

Current host of CBS Sports’ The NFL Today, James Brown was named Special Correspondent for CBS News.  James will contribute original reporting on stories and will appear on various CBS News broadcasts.  He begins this Saturday on CBS This Morning: Saturday. 

ABC News promoted James Goldston to SVP/Content and Development to oversee ABC News’ programs and executive producers.  James will further develop new shows for broadcast, cable and other distribution avenues.  Most recently, James was Executive Producer of Nightline and for the last year was Senior Executive Producer of Good Morning America.  Additionally, ABC News advances Tom Cibrowski to Senior Executive Producer of GMA.  Tom has been with GMA since 2002 and a producer for ABC News’ bureaus in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Seattle. 

Mandi Dyner was hired by Spotlight Cinema Networks as VP/Advertising Sales  Western Region based at company headquarters in Santa Monica.  Mandi joins from Outcast Media where she was VP/Sales.
