Good Morning, it’s Friday, March 2, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

After signing a new multi-year contract, Kevin Reilly will remain as President of NBC Entertainment. Kevin has been in this position for almost three years and has developed such programs as Heroes, The Office, Deal or No Deal and My Name Is Earl for the network. He will continue to report to Marc Graboff, President/NBC Universal Television, West Coast.

Tonight’s Finale:
USA:  Monk at 9p

Tonight’s Premiere:
USA:  Psych at 10p

~ MORE STUFF ~

ABC World News with Charles Gibson won the February sweep, taking the 10-year old tiara off NBC Nightly News.  Here’s the breakdown –
ABC World News  – 9.7 million total viewers; 2.6 A25-54 rating
NBC Nightly News – 9.6 million total viewers; 2.4 A25-54 rating
CBS Evening News – 7.6 million total viewers; 2.1 A25-54 rating

NBC will replace John Reiss as executive producer of NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams.  Reiss has been at the job for less than two years, and will be reassigned within the network.  While the timing may appear to be a reaction to ABC World News with Charles Gibson beating NBC in February, reports indicate the change has been in the works for quite some time.  NBC led the broadcast news race for nearly a decade, and didn’t miss a step when Williams slid into Tom Brokaw’s anchor seat.

Buoyed by its American Idol lead-in, FOX has added four more one-hour episodes of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? to air on consecutive Thursdays starting March 29 at 8p. The previously announced episodes on March 15 and 22 will also air at 8p and the episode on March 8 is scheduled for 9p. The premiere episode broke the network’s record as the highest-rated premiere in 13 years, as well as the highest-rated premiere episode on any network in more than five years with A18-49 at 11.2/26.

News Corp.-owned MyNetworkTV has announced it will discontinue production for the planned seventh and eighth telenovelas, and will not pursue any future scripted projects. The network is having talks with leading reality producers to acquire new programs. Since its launch last fall with telenovelas, MyNetworkTV has averaged about 800,000 viewers. The network will still air the final two telenovelas, American Heiress and Saints & Sinners, on Tuesday and Wednesday nights next month, along with mixed martial-arts bouts on Mondays and movies on Thursdays and Fridays. Several upcoming specials will also filter in the schedule including one about Anna Nicole Smith and an Elton John concert.

Starting April 1, The Biography Channel UK will show off a new brand identity with a redesign and a shortened moniker, BIO. The focus of the network will continue to be “Lives Less Ordinary.”

WE tv will debut its original 30m, eight-part series Designer to the Stars: Kari Whitman this Saturday with two episodes at 10p and 1030p. This LA-based interior designer, with a penchant for perfectionism, works with Hollywood’s hottest celebrities such as Virginia Madsen and Kristen Bell, in addition to finding homes for lost dogs through her personal charity, Ace of Hearts. The series is produced by GRB.

Veronika Lineberry
, 44, VP/Creative Services for King World, died unexpectedly on February 22 in Santa Monica. At King World, Veronika supervised advertising and promotion for the syndicated programs Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!. She is survived by her husband Tommy Manzella and two young children. A memorial mass will be held today in Santa Monica and donations in her name for an educational trust for her children can be sent to: The Jacob and Mariele Manzella Education Trust, c/o Robert Madden, CBS TV Distribution/King World, 2401 Colorado Avenue, Suite 110, Santa Monica, CA 90404.

The Miami-based private equity firm, H.I.G. Capital along with Telecorps Holdings, Inc. has acquired Wexler Video, LLC directly from its founder Bob Wexler. Based in Los Angeles, Wexler Video is a digital video production and post production equipment rental company which started in 1984.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

You know the Geico Caveman commercials?  Well, the Caveman is being developed into a pilot project for ABC about three cavemen who are dealing with prejudice on a daily basis while living like regular 30-somethings in Atlanta, says Daily Variety. The project is from ABC TV Studio and will be written by the same guy who wrote the commercials, Joe Lawson, for the Martin Agency.  Lawson also wrote the commercials for the Australian accented gecko.

Richard Dreyfuss may be returning the small screen as he signs to join the cast of Sci Fi Channel‘s miniseries Tin Man from RHI Entertainment, a new take on the original novel by Frank Baum, The Wizard of Oz.  According to Hollywood Reporter, Dreyfuss will play a wizardly character called Mystic Man who resides in the Outer Zone, aka O.Z..  Alan Cummings is also appearing in Tin Man, playing Glitch, one of the three who join Dorothy, known in this rendition simply as DG, who are all on a trek to see the noted wizard, Mystic Man.  Tin Man is looking at a December premiere.

Casting:

  • Rhea Seehorn will take on the role of the congressman’s speech writer/staffer in ABC’s The Thick of It from Sony TV and BBC Worldwide Productions.
  • CBSuntitled drama project about three generations of a powerful Latin American family running a Florida rum business and led by Jimmy Smits, has cast Rita Moreno to play Smit’s mother and family matriarch.
  • CBS‘ pilot project Babylon Fields has cast Amber Tamblyn to star.  The story is about dead people who are trying to pick up where death left off, and resume their regular lives.  Tamblyn’s character, along with her mother, killed her father after years of abuse.  Now he’s back.  While that sounds onerous, this project is listed as a comedic drama.
  • The fourth and final lead role in ABC‘s drama pilot Women’s Murder Club has been filled by Laura Harris.  The full cast now includes Angie Harmon, Paula Newsome, Aubrey Dollar and now Harris, and together the four solve murder cases.
~ BROADBAND & DIGITAL ~

CBS Interactive’s CBSSportLine.com will add an extra hour of live bonus coverage of golf’s PGA flagship event – The Masters. CBS’ complete line-up of announcers, led by Jim Nantz, will provide streaming-video coverage from the field free of charge from 3 -4 PM ET on April 5 & 6 and from 2:30-3:30 PM ET on April 7 & 8. “Amen Corner Live” coverage of holes 11, 12 and 13 will be offered again this year for all four days. Over 3.4 million streams of this feature were served last year, according to CBS Interactive, with the average Amen Corner Live visitor spending over 2 hours per visit.

Viacom outlined its digital strategies in a conference call with analysts, offering insight into how digital will mix with traditional offerings in the future. Its first goal is to grow internal properties by improving existing websites and virtual worlds. Its second directive is to pursue more partnerships and smaller acquisitions to strengthen distribution. Viacom executives are pleased with forward-looking properties such as Nicktropolis, which combines virtual worlds, social networking and broadband content. Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman said redesigns helped boost unique visitor traffic at ComedyCentral.com by 90 percent in January year-on-year and by 55 percent at MTV.com during the same period.

Lin TV Corp. and Cox Communications reached a retransmission consent agreement covering both analog and HDTV channels in Mobile, Alabama; Pensacola, Florida; Norfolk, Virginia; Providence, R.I.; Springfield, Mass. and Hartford/New Haven, Connecticut. The agreement also grants Cox the rights to LIN TV’s locally-produced content for distribution on video-on-demand as well as digital multiplex channels such as a local weather channel serving Hartford and Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Verizon Wireless launched a mobile TV service using Qualcomm’s MediaFLO USA‘s video streaming technology and network, initially rolling out the service to 20 U.S. markets. Verizon customers with a video-enabled handset can spend $15 for eight live 24/7 video channels from programmers such as CBS, Comedy Central, Fox, MTV, NBC News, NBC Entertainment and Nickelodeon, programmed specifically for mobile distribution. Verizon is also offering a bundled option with its video-on-demand V Cast service for $25 a month, only $5 more than the stand-alone V Cast service.
