At its upfront presentation at New York City’s Cipriani on Thursday, March 28, FX Networks announced plans to become a suite of three networks: FX, FXM and the soon-to-be launched FXX, aimed at young adult viewers. “We’re embarking on an incredibly ambitious ramp-up of program development and production required to sustain these networks,” said John Landgraf, President and General Manager, who presented the program, assisted by “Lasagne” Lou LaTorre, Ad Sales President and “Matzoh Ball” Bruce Lefkowitz (their names, not ours). “Our three-network platform will enable us to achieve even greater goals and solidify our position as a leader in quality scripted original programming.”  Here are some highlights:

FX –

  • FX’s The Americans, which concludes its first season on May 1, has been renewed for a second season to debut in January of 2014. Justified, which ends on April 2, has been renewed for a fifth season to debut in January of 2014. Season 6 of Sons of Anarchy is set to return in September. In addition, FX picked up the fifth season of Archer, and season four of Louie will debut on May of 2014.
  • The newest incarnation of the American Horror Story miniseries, American Horror Story: Coven, will be set in New Orleans and roll out in October and through January 2014. Academy Award winner Kathy Bates joins the cast opposite Jessica Lange.
  • FX has ordered its first limited series, Fargo. Inspired by the film, the series will follow a new case and new characters. The 10-episode series begins production this fall and is slated to premiere in spring of 2014.
  • The drama series The Bridge premieres in July. Starring Demian Bichir and Diane Kruger, it centers on two detectives, one from the United States and one from Mexico, who must work together to hunt down a killer operating on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. 
  • FX Networks comedy pilot orders include How and Why from Charlie Kaufman, the story of a man who can explain how and why a nuclear reactor works, but is clueless about life; and Chozen from Grant Dekernion, an animated comedy about a white rapper, recently out of prison.
  • Pilot-to-series projects include Tyrant. From award-winning Homeland Producers Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff and Craig Wright, the pilot, which begins production this summer, will be directed by two-time Academy Award-winner Ang Lee. In addition, Strain, which centers on a terrifying vision bloodsucking vampires, begins production in August.
  • In addition to original series, FX will televise blockbuster movies and its schedule will also include the acquired series Anger Management, Two and a Half Men and, coming in 2014, Mike & Molly.

FXX-

  • FXX’s schedule will consist of original series, movies and acquired series geared toward a target demo of Adults 18-34. The new channel will be anchored by season 10 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and seasons 5 and 6 of The League, which move over from FX along with season 2 of Legit.
  • Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell is also moving to FXX and will expand to a 5-night-per-week, half-hour strip.

FXM-

  • FXM will feature prestige movies and grow to feature miniseries and movies.
  • Beginning this fall, FX Networks will launch the FXNOW app, creating its own version of TV Everywhere for subscribers of FX, FXX and FXM. The FXNOW platform will be available to authenticated subscribers of participating FX cable, satellite and telco providers.
~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Pop singer Demi Lovato is ready to take Simon Cowell on for round two. Lovato will return as the fan-favorite judge on The X Factor, when the singing competition series launches its third season this fall on FOX. “I couldn’t be happier that Demi wants to come back this year,” said Simon Cowell. “She’s a superstar in her own right and was a fantastic mentor last year. Even though she can be really, really annoying, I truly enjoyed working with her and so did the artists. I’m especially pleased she’s back, even during her world tour!”

It looks like the grand dame of TV news is set to retire. It’s been reported that Barbara Walters plans to step down from ABC News and her talk show The View in May 2014, ending a career that has spanned 52 years. Walters is expected to make the announcement in the coming weeks.

Syfy has announced that Sinbad and Primeval: New World will join its prime time schedule beginning Saturday, June 8. Debuting at 9p, the 12-episode Sinbad follows the title character’s epic sea journey as he embarks on a quest to rid himself of a curse and embrace his destiny. Sinbad is a British Sky Broadcasting presentation of An Impossible Pictures Production. Following at 10p will be Primeval: New World. The 13-episode series focuses on a team of animal experts and scientists investigating paranormal events, while battling both prehistoric and futuristic creatures. The show is produced by Omnifilm Entertainment. 

WE tv is adding a new series to its summer lineup: Marriage Bootcamp: Bridezillas. A spinoff of Bridezillas, the show follows five outrageous Bridezillas and their husbands living together in the same house for an extreme marriage boot camp designed to get at the root of what’s destroying their marriages. In the end, couples are faced with the ultimate question: how do you stay married to a bridezilla?

MundoFox has begun production of its second season of the hit game show Minuto Para Ganar in New York City. It is the first Spanish-language production to be a part of the City’s Made in NY initiative, which supports and encourages television and film productions that shoot the majority of their projects in New York City.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

There’s more marital madness on the horizon from WE tv. The network has renewed Bridezillas for a tenth season, as well as My Fair Wedding with David Tutera, which will now be titled David Tutera Unveiled, for a sixth season.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT NEWS ~

TNT has ordered eight episodes of Nashville Confidential. The new docudrama, set in the country music capital, will focus on the power couples who live there. The series is being produced by Evolution Media, the same company behind The Real Housewives franchise.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Zodiak Rights has acquired a documentary: William, Kate and the Royal Baby from Paris based CB Productions. The one-hour special, which was co-produced by CB Productions and Marathon for France 3, will be delivered in July, just in time for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first born’s arrival. As well as pre-sales to France 5, TSR and RTBF, Zodiak Rights also secured sales to TLC in the US, UKTV in the UK, Antena 3 in Spain, RTL2 in Germany, VTM in Flemish-speaking Belgium, Nova in the Czech Republic, MTV 3 in Finland, Noga in Israel, Leland in China, NTV Nippon Television in Japan, NBC Universal in Russia, CBC in English-speaking Canada and Radio Canada for the French-speaking territory. 

~ CASTING NEWS ~

FOX‘s New Girl is adding some serious star power, albeit in a cameo role. Singing sensation Taylor Swift has been tapped to play a guest at Cece and Shivrang’s wedding on the show’s season finale on May 14.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX came out on top Wednesday night delivering a 3.2/9 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s American Idol ranked #1 at 3.1/10 and CBS’ Survivor: Caramoan followed at 2.5/8. FOX’s American Idol remained in first at 9p at 3.4/10, while ABC’s Modern Family was a close second from 9-9:30p at 3.2/9. At 9:30-10p, ABC’s Suburgatory and Univision’s  Amores Verdaderos tied for second at 1.9/5. NBC’s Chicago Fire and Univision’s Amor Bravio tied at the top spot at 10p at 1.7/5. ABC’s Nashville ranked next at 1.5/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Hearst Corporation has announced that Steven R. Swartz will succeed Frank A. Bennack, Jr., as chief executive officer, effective June 1, 2013. Swartz was appointed Hearst’s COO in 2011 and was named president in 2012. Bennack will continue to serve as executive vice chairman of the Hearst Board of Directors and chairman of the Corporation’s Executive Committee.

BBH New York has promoted Julian Cole to communications planning department head, effective immediately. Previously a strategy director, Cole will continue to spearhead BBH New York’s work as the lead creative agency for the Sony PlayStation account, along with Johnny Walker.
