CBS ordered a new dance competition series, Got To Dance featuring amateur talent and based on the hit British format airing on Sky 1. The premise is any solo or dance group of any age or size can compete in the live competition to become the viewers’ favorite dance act. The show will have a panel of judges comprised of professional dancers who will be announced at a later date. Audition information can also be found at CBS.com. Got To Dance is a Shine Group format and created by Princess Productions and Shine TV; Reveille is producing. ABC declared the 83rd Annual Academy Awards presentation will air live on February 27, 2011 from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Prior to the awards special, the Oscar nominees will be announced on January 25 at 530a from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. FOX’s upcoming culinary competition series Masterchef headed by chef Gordon Ramsay added wine maker/restaurateur Joe Bastianich and chef Graham Elliot Bowles as judges and coaches to the participating contestants. Masterchef, debuting July 29 at 9p takes amateur chefs and hobby cooks through various cooking challenges in an attempt to turn them into professional chefs. Bastianich partners with Mario Batali in the ownership of some of New York’s most popular restaurants, while Bowles is the youngest four-star chef in the US and owns Chicago’s first “bistronomic” restaurant, Graham Elliot. Masterchef is inspired by a format created by Franc Roddam and Shine TV and is produced by Reveille, Shine TV and One Potato Two Potato. Shine International spearheads the series distribution. Showtime announced third season renewals for its original comedies Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara, just days after the pair opened their second seasons. Each half-hour series received 12-episode orders with production on both beginning later this year. On Monday, Sportsman Channel opens a third season of Trout Unlimited: On the Rise at 11p. Encore broadcasts will air on Wednesdays at 1230p; Friday’s at 830a; Saturdays at 10a; and Sundays at 230a. Hosted by Colorado fishing guide Frank Smethurst, the series is from Trout Unlimited, the nation’s largest coldwater conservation group that targets critical issues facing America’s trout and salmon. TV One welcomes film and television star and former First Lady of the Turks and Caicos, LisaRaye in a new reality series, LisaRaye: The Real McCoy, premiering April 8 with back-to-back episodes starting at 9p. The new series follows LisaRaye in Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta as she tries to rebuild her acting career while juggling motherhood and her personal life. The 30m, eight-episode series will repeat Thursdays at 12 midnight; Sundays at 7p; Fridays at 3p; Saturdays at 1p; Mondays at 12 noon; and Wednesdays at 4a. The previous week’s episode will also repeat immediately following the premiere each Thursday at 930p and 1230a. Evolution Media produces the series for TV One. HGTV brings forth a new weekly competition series where three neighborhood families compete in a 72-hour design contest involving their own homes. Battle on the Block premieres April 11 at 10p, hosted by designer Genevieve Gorder. Each family gets help from a construction team, a limited budget and design consultation from Gorder in hopes of winning a $10,000 cash prize and bragging rights on their block. TLC launches a fourth season of its real estate series My First Home next Tuesday at 8p with two back-to-back half-hour episodes. Oxygen’s new competition series Love Games: Bad Girls Need Love Too moves to a new time period next week, starting next Tuesday at 10p. Investigation Discovery’s (ID) original series On the Case with Paula Zahn is back for a second season starting April 18 at 10p. Thirteen new episodes feature Zahn as she uncovers new evidence behind startling real-life stories. The series is produced by Scott Sternberg Productions and Weinberger Media for ID. MTV will air the final and sixth season of reality drama The Hills beginning April 27 at 10p followed by The City at 1030p. The Hills: Final Season will have twelve episodes. The Hills: Season Five, Part Two will be released on DVD also on April 27. Bravo reintroduces the Jersey Girls for a second season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey on a new night, Mondays beginning May 3 at 10p. Sirens Media, LLC produces the series for Bravo. Effective immediately, Los Angeles-based Dailey was selected as the agency for King’s Hawaiian Bakery, handling advertising, promotion, website development and social media along with media planning and buying. TV Guide Network picked up the exclusive basic cable rights to air the Showtime comedy series Weeds starting September 2010. TV Guide Network acquired all episodes in the series’ initial five seasons in addition to future episodes including the show’s sixth season which is now in production. Weeds is produced by Lionsgate Television in association with Titled Productions. Digital network, ION Life acquired the fitness series My Workout from Beverly Hills-based Shankly International Distribution. My Workout is a half-hour series showcasing Hollywood’s top celebrity trainers, Yumi Lee, Ron Matthews and Jeanette Jenkins. My Workout is produced by Alan Winters of Podfitness. Shankly represents the series globally and has also sold the series to XYZ Network in Australia and Coign Media in Korea. Small World I.F.T. also represents the series worldwide. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
Syfy cast Lucas Bryant (Dollhouse) and Eric Balfour (24) for its new drama series Haven, based on the novella The Colorado Kid by Stephen King. Haven stars Emily Rose who plays FBI agent Audrey Parker who comes to the small town of Haven, Maine investigating a case and finds out the town is a refuge for people who have supernatural abilities. Bryant will play Nathan Wuornos, a local cop who becomes Audrey’s partner while Balfour plays an eccentric town resident, Duke Crocker. Production will likely begin this spring in Halifax, Nova Scotia with a planned launch this summer. Haven is produced by E1 Entertainment in association with Pillar, Segan and Shepherd. This is the first project produced by Syfy Channel US and NBCU Pay channels internationally (excluding Canada and Scandinavia). Additionally, Haven has been co-commissioned by Syfy with Canwest Broadcasting of Canada. E1 also is involved with international distribution. ESPN Deportes said the Dallas-based Spanish-language newspaper Al Dia and its assistant sports editor, Carlos Nava will now contribute to the network’s daily sports and commentary show, Juego Cruzado. The show, co-hosted by Carolina Guillen, Andres Agulla and Luis Alfredo Alvarez, features sports journalists from a number of newspapers in the US and Mexico including Mario Concha, El Diario La Prensa (New York), Jorge Ebro, El Nuevo Herald (Miami), Rafa Ramos, La Opinion (Los Angeles) and Rafael Ocampo, Milenio (Mexico). Clarification: Early reports on Wednesday about Sarah Palin’s new reality show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska had the show landing at Discovery Channel. It was picked up Discovery Communications though will instead air on TLC. Discovery Communications acquired the US and international rights to the eight-episode docu-series featuring the former governor and the state of Alaska. The series will be produced by Mark Burnett Productions. A premiere date has not been set. ~ RATINGS ~
Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX held its first place status Wednesday night at 4.6/13 with the A18-49 viewers, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS’ Survivor won at 8p with 3.4/11 followed by ABC’s comedies Modern Family and The Middle averaging a 2.1/6, though FOX’s Human Target was a close third at 2.0/6. There was no stopping FOX’s American Idol as it swept away the 9p hour at 7.2/20 with more comedies on ABC taking second place as new episodes of Modern Family and Cougar Town averaged a 3.1/8. Also this hour, The CW premiered its new half-hour series Fly Girls at 9p with a 0.4/1. New television network Halogen, with a socially-conscious focus, hired Kyle Chowning as VP/Marketing and Communications. Kyle will head all marketing activities for the network including affiliate and consumer marketing in addition to partnership development. Prior to this appointment, Kyle was a marketing consultant for Halogen during its pre-launch phase through his former company, Motiveight Marketing Group, Inc. Bruce Loeb joined the US office of World Cyber Games Inc. (WCG) as SVP/GM. Bruce will spearhead the company’s efforts in the US and increase the awareness of competitive gaming for World Cyber Games. Bruce will also host the WCG 2010 Grand Final in Los Angeles later this year. Media Storm named Jeremy Cornfeldt to the newly created role as Managing Director/Digital, effective immediately. Jeremy will be in charge of the digital team including integrating digital into the overall agency, its processes and technology.
