Good morning. It’s Friday, March 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning kids briefing.

Starz Entertainment, LLC, a Liberty Media company, has filed a lawsuit against Disney’s Buena Vista Television, concerning the sale of Disney movies over online services including iTunes, and Walmart.com, to which Starz says it holds an exclusive license as part of a deal with BVT.  Starz claims that under the terms of the 1993 and 1999 Starz-BVT agreements, extended by BVT in 2005, Disney is prohibited from selling its films for transmission over the internet prior to or during Starz’s exclusive license periods.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

When Indonesia’s adaptation of Sesame Street, which will be titled Jalan Sesama (loosely translated means Everyone’s Street), debuts in 2010 the series will include four new Muppet characters and four local adult human characters.  Series producer Creative Indigo, a Jakarta-based company, and co-producer Sesame Workshop are currently producing three seasons of Jalan Sesama simultaneously in Indonesia.  The new Muppet characters are specifically designed to reflect the diversity of the Indonesian archipelago:

  • Momon – a 5-year-old boy who loves to draw and his crayons are his favorite things in the world.
  • Putri – an independent and curious young girl, who isn’t afraid to make mistakes.  Putri is always asking Momon to teach her letters and numbers.
  • Tantan – a wise family oriented female Orangutan (she has no specific age) and the peacemaker in the community.  Tantan loves to read books and help the librarian.
  • Jabrik – a grouchy baby rhino, Jabrik is good with numbers and likes to laugh.

Initial funding for Jalan Sesama comes from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Columbia Pictures’ fourth and last movie trailer for Spider-Man 3 debuts today on Comcast’s VOD service, online at Comcast.net, a broadband site, and on a custom movie website http://www.spiderman3oncomcast.com .  Comcast viewers will also have access to additional exclusive material about Spider-Man 3 and the upcoming Activision Publishing video game based on the movie on Comcast’s platforms, with new content debuting each week.  Comcast’s GameInvasion.net will feature a range of videos and interviews providing details on the Spider-Man 3 video game, including exclusive Spider-Man 3 Game trailers, game play footage and character vignettes.  Spider-Man 3 is set to open wide on May 3, 2007.

TV broadcaster S4C (in Welsh stands for Sianel Pedwar Cymru – or in English, Channel Four Wales), has sold its share of the preschool animated series Fireman Sam to the property’s co-owners, HIT Entertainment.  According to the terms of the deal, S4C will continue airing existing and new episodes and will also retain all Welsh-language rights Fireman Sam, or in Welsh Sam Tan.  S4C will also continue as Executive Producer for the upcoming sixth season of Fireman Sam, which is slated for delivery in spring 2008.  Series 6 also includes a DVD special featuring content from the new series and a 1-hour special to be released in 2009.  S4C’s CEO, Iona Jones says the revenue from the sale of its share of the property will be used expand its Welsh-language kid’s services in addition to other strategic initiatives.

Portfolio Entertainment has completed new deals for Carl2, the tween-targeted animated comedy series.  In Australia ABC acquires up seasons two and three of Carl2, a total of 26×30′, and ABC2 picks up all three seasons of the series (52×30′).  Renewing deals for the series are VRT in Belgium for season two (13×30′), and in Poland Canal + Cyfrowy, which re-ups for seasons two and three.  Carl2 is produced and distributed worldwide by Portfolio Entertainment.

Shaftesbury Sales Company has completed several sales for Booky Makes Her Mark (1×90′), a family-targeted TV movie based on the trilogy of books by author Bernice Thurman Hunter.  Booky Makes Her Mark has recently been sold to Sky (UK), TV3 (Ireland), Netherlands Public Broadcasting and Reshet-TV (Israel).  Based on this recent group of sales, a second Booky movie will be produced and broadcast later this year.  The series follows Beatrice “Booky” Thomson, a spunky 15-year-old, living in Toronto in the 1930s, who dreams of becoming a writer.  Booky Makes Her Mark is produced by Platt Productions and Shaftesbury Films in association with CBC Television Inc., with the financial support from the Shaw Rocket Fund.  “Booky” is distributed worldwide by Shaftesbury Sales Company and will be available to at MIP-TV 2007.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Dynamite Entertainment will launch its new Painkiller Jane comic book series this spring, with Painkiller Jane #1 slated to be published in May.  Created by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, Painkiller Jane will also makes its way to TV with a new series slated to premiere on SCI FI Channel from April 13, 2007.  In conjunction with the TV series debut, Dynamite will publish a special comic, Painkiller Jane #0, which will sell for a mere $.25.  For those comic fans and collectors among us, Painkiller Jane #1 will be available with covers by noted comic book artists/illustrators Amanda Conner, George Jeanty, Ron Adrian and Stjepan Sejic.  Additionally, Painkiller Jane#1 will be published as a “Blood Red” Foil Edition.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Isabel Miller joins Big Tent Entertainment as head of Business Development.  Miller will oversee the continuing growth of the company’s consumer products operations and its licensing revenues for a range of kid-targeted properties.  Additionally, she will be part of several retail and marketing initiatives.  A consumer products and brand marketing industry veteran, Miller was formerly EVP/Consumer Products at Jim Henson Company.  Isabel is President and Founder of Stella Bella, whose clients include The Jim Henson Company, SD Entertainment, Character Arts, WGBH, and The World of Brian Froud.
