At Crown Media’s upfront presentation at New York City’s elegant Eleven Madison Park restaurant, the Hallmark Channel announced that it’s doubling down its efforts to develop original programming by adding a new scripted series to its schedule and two pilots to its development slate. “The recognition factor for our network is not what it should be, considering how strong Hallmark is,” said Bill Abbott, President and CEO of Crown Media Family Networks. “We expect this Upfront to be groundbreaking for us – and be up 20% in terms of volume.” Here are some highlights of what the network has coming up:

  • The network’s first original scripted series, Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove, stars Andie MacDowell as a small-town family court judge whose work life directly impacts her day-to-day life. It premieres July 20 as a two-hour movie. New, one-hour episodes will follow on Saturdays beginning July 27.
  • When Calls the Heart has been greenlit for 10 episodes. Based on the book by Janette Oke, it tells the story of Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom post in a prairie town in the Western Frontier. The movie pilot debuts on October 5, while the series premieres in January 2014.
  • Pilot-to-series projects include My Gal Sunday, based on a book of short stories by Mary Higgins Clark, and Dead Letters, developed by Touched by An Angel creator Martha Williamson. My Gal Sunday follows the husband and wife crime solving duo of Sunday and Henry Parker. Henry is an ex-Vice President of the United States, and Sunday is a legal aid lawyer. Dead Letters, follows a quirky quartet of civil servants in the Dead Letter Office of the US Postal System who transform themselves into an elite team of lost-mail detectives.
  • The daytime lifestyle show Home & Family has been renewed for a second season. Mark Steines and Christina Ferrare will return to co-host.
  • Hallmark has acquired off-network rights to Home Improvement from Disney-ABC. It will begin airing the series in September. It joins the recently acquired The Good Wife, which will air in January 2014, and The Middle, which will air in March 2014.
  • Plus, 13 original movies are set to premiere in 2013.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

FOX has postponed production of its drama pilot The Wild Blue, after talks with Tim McGraw to star in the series fell through. The drama will now film out of the March-May pilot season window.

Sundance Channel is pre-launching its new scripted drama series Rectify before its linear debut on Monday, April 22. The network will make the first three episodes of the six part series available on video-on-demand and TV Everywhere platforms beginning Monday, April 15. Rectify, which is written by Ray McKinnon and produced by Breaking Bad’s Gran Via Productions, revolves around Daniel Holden (played by Aden Young), a man released from prison after nearly 20 years of complete isolation on death row.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

There’s more love gone wrong coming from Investigation Discovery. The network has renewed Dates from Hell, the series that profiles the dark side of dating, for a second season. The show premieres on Friday, April 12 at 10 and 10:30p. To promote the new season, ID is launching the Escape a Date texting service for fans. Beginning March 22 users can text ESCAPE to 97979 to receive a phone call that offers a bailout from their own date disasters.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

DCD Rights has agreed to an output deal with Fuse to distribute a raft of original programming around the world. Warped Roadies is the first in an ongoing slate of original production from the music-themed broadcaster. The series follows the stories, trials and tribulations of the crew charged with keeping the Vans Warped Tour rolling as it crosses the United States.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Sierra/Engine Television has teamed with Infinity Media to distribute and produce Siberia internationally. The reality series, which takes contestants to Tunguska where they must band together to survive, is currently in production with 6 completed episodes.

Zodiak Rights, the international division of Zodiak Media, has signed a first-look development deal with UK indie Minnow Films. The first programs to come under the deal include Walking Wounded: Return to the Frontline, The 15 Stone Babies and One Day In London. Zodiak Rights will launch the finished programs at MIPTV in April.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Mamie Gummer, formerly of Emily Owens M.D., has been tapped to co-star in the CBS drama pilot Backstrom. She’ll play Nicole Carlton, an openly gay police detective.

Ashley Williams of How I Met Your Mother has replaced Majandra Delfino in the ABC comedy pilot Keep Calm and Karey On. She’ll play Penny, Karey’s singer/songwriter sister.

ABC Family has cast Leslie Jordan (The Help, Boston Legal, Will & Grace) to guest star on the comedy series Baby Daddy, which returns for its second season on Wednesday, May 29 at 8:30p. Jordan will appear in the holiday episode as a world-weary elf from the local mall.

David Anders (Once Upon a Time, Vampire Diaries, 24) has landed a recurring guest star role in season three of USA‘s Necessary Roughness.

~ FYI… ~

Big Block Design Group, a division of digital production studio Big Block, has created a series of on-air promos for FUEL TV‘s newly launched Fan Cameo app. The groundbreaking app allows viewers to submit their video reactions to things they see on the network. The Fan Cameo promos began airing on March 11.

~ IN MEMORIAM ~

Rena Golden, former senior director of digital content for The Weather Company, died on March 20 at her home in Atlanta, after a two-year battle with lymphoma. She was 51. A funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, March 24 at Temple Kol Emeth in Marietta, Ga. In lieu of flowers, her family has suggested making a small donation in her name to her favorite charities: Operation Smile and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
