Good morning. It’s Friday, March 1, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The legal battle between Dish Network and ESPN ended with a 1-3 score, after a federal jury dismissed three claims against ESPN, ruling only that the company had allowed Dish’s competitors to pay a lower rate for ESPN Deportes. Dish Network was awarded $4.86 million in damages, but had been seeking over $152 million in the contract dispute.
It now seems that the seven catholic schools leaving the Big East will be able to keep the Big East moniker and will now depart the league in time for next season, according to ESPN. In addition, the group of seven will add A-10 teams Xavier and Butler, with Creighton now the likely tenth school to round out the mix this fall. Fox Sports is reportedly helping the schools depart early, according to the report, and will announce a broadcast deal with them next week when the launch of the Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2 channels are expected to be formally unveiled.
This year’s 2013 NFL Scouting Combine Presented by Under Armour shot NFL Network up the rankings and scored a record audience around the world for its coverage of the event with 7.25 million viewers watching the channel over the four days. That bests viewership from last year by11%, according to Nielsen. On the digital front, unique users to NFL.com and NFL Mobile, grew 33% to over 10 million, while video streams of combine Live grew 89% to 3.6 million.
Golf Channelreports that January and February marked the best ever start to a year in network history, according to Nielsen. For 24-hour Total Day numbers, the network saw 123,000 average viewers per minute for the first two months of the year, marking an 11% year-over-year increase compared to the same time period in 2012. In addition:
- The channel’s revamped Morning Drive show-which expanded to seven days a week-saw an average of 52,000 viewers last week, up 30% over the week prior to launch.
- Michael Phelps’ participation in The Haney Project this year scored 205,000 average viewers in its season five debut, up 153% over its 2012 premiere.
- Network staple Feherty drew 194,000 average viewers for its season premiere, up 48% over 2012.
World Wrestling Entertainment executives said that it may launch a branded premium cable channel this year which would charge subscribers between $12.99 and $14.99 a month for its services. The company projected that it could attract 2 million to 4 million subscribers to a premium network, which would equate $125 million to $250 million in incremental revenue and cash flow of $50 million to $150 million. The company did not say when the potential channel would launch.
CBS Sports’ salute to 75 years of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship is set to continue this weekend on CBS Sports Network at 7p with a look at The Ultimate Bracket. The special will examine which previous champion would win in a hypothetical tournament of all 74 of the past winners. Greg Gumbel hosts and is joined by analysts Clark Kellogg, Seth Davis, Mateen Cleaves, Wally Szczerbiak and CBSSports.com college basketball columnist Gary Parrish. The celebration then continues Sunday with a slate of five shows counting down the 75 greatest moments in NCAA Tournament history.
TV rights for soccer in Latin America broke the $1 billion mark in 2012, according to a report by Dataxis. The AP writes that the report noted a 56% increase in revenues last year for first division matches in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, which tallied $1.07 billion in the territories. Four countries, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico, were responsible for over 90% of the tally.
HBO2 will carry the premiere of world championship boxing in Macau with Zou Shiming: Fists of Gold on April 6 at 2p. The program will feature two world title fights and the professional debut of the Peoples Republic of China’s two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and three-time World Amateur Champion Zou Shiming.
March Madness is about to surface and BTN announced that Greg Shaheen, who ran the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for 12 years, will join BTN host Mike Hall to take fans inside the tournament selection process in Inside the Selection Process, airing on the channel on Monday at 9p.
Meanwhile, Pac-12 Networks takes on its first March Madness with coverage of both men’s and women’s conference tournaments, as well as additional programming designed to set the stage for conference teams advancing to the big dance. Coverage will include the first three rounds of the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament starting Thursday, March 7 in Seattle. The men’s tournament then starts on Wednesday, March 13 from Las Vegas with eight games on deck on the networks. The channels will also carry one-hour selection show specials for both men’s and women’s hoops. The Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Selection Show airs Sunday, March 17 at 7p with host Mike Yam while the women’s special will air the next night at 7p.
IndyCar racer James Hinchcliffe signed a deal with FOX Sports Media Group to provide analysis for SPEED weekend series SPEED Center and Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain.
WFN: World Fishing Network, is adding two new shows In the Loop and Ultimate Day Off to its programming lineup this March. In the Loop, launches Tuesday, March 5 at 8:30p, looking at the life of teen fly fishing phenom Hunter Hoffler as he travels and trains with some of the top fly fishermen in the world. Ultimate Day Off debuts March 22 at 7:30p with Captain Ron Hueston offering a day of guided fishing at one of Florida’s top fishing destinations.

Under Armour is stepping up with USA Gymnastics in a new agreement that will include apparel for competition and training through the next two Olympics. The eight-year agreement marks the first deal with a national governing body of a Summer Olympic sport for Under Armour. U.S. gymnasts will reveal their new apparel at Saturday’s American Cup.
The Lakers will once again be known as Los Lakers for NBA’s seventh annual Noche Latina this week. Starting March 3, the team will wear the Los Lakers uniforms for three games as part of the event, according to the LA Times. Other teams participating in the event around the league include the Bulls, Heat, Knocks, Magic, Suns and Spurs.

ESPN Digital Media drew 29% of all sports category usage across digital platforms in January, according to comScore’s Multi Platform (Beta) data. The month saw ESPN’s digital properties draw 62.6 million unique visitors with 4.97 billion minutes of usage. The metrics saw 39% of ESPN’s unique users 24.2 million people exclusively digital content coming from mobile device users. Across social media, ESPN television content generated 13.0 million social comments.
Spike TV is launching a MMA app, Bellator MMA, for iPad, iPhone, and iTouch, as fans can experience mixed martial arts like never before with the world’s most advanced co-viewing MMA app. The app is designed to work with the live Spike broadcast of the sport to offer real-time fight data to fans. In addition, as The 4th Judge, fans can score rounds with the help of real-time statistics powered by CompuStrike, a service that offers data in 26 categories from arm strikes to submission attempts.
STIHL Inc., the company behind the lumberjack sports event, the STIHL Timbersports Series, has launched Fantasy Lumberjack, the first-ever fantasy game for lumberjack sports. The game will be hosted on the series’ Facebook page this season, which starts on March 15. The game allows users to act as owners and select their own team for the year.
