CNN’s Christiane Amanpour joins ABC News as new anchor of the Sunday morning political show This Week beginning in August. Amanpour will additionally appear on other ABC News programs and platforms, offering an international perspective on current issues and news and anchor primetime documentaries on international topics. Amanpour has been with CNN for twenty years, reporting on-site from major conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Rwanda and the Balkans. Amanpour has also been honored with many top journalistic awards. Until Amanpour begins her new post at ABC News this August, Jake Tapper will become the interim anchor of This Week and Ian Cameron will continue as executive producer. The anchor position of This Week became vacant earlier this year when George Stephanopoulos left the program to co-anchor Good Morning America.

Sundance Channel opens a second season of its original primetime series The Lazy Environmentalist in time for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. The half-hour series premieres in the US, Asia and Europe on April 20, two days prior to Earth Day. Hosted by eco-entrepreneur and author Josh Dorfman, the series teaches viewers that going green doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Eight new episodes are produced for Sundance Channel by Free Range Media.

Animal Planet brings back a second season of River Monsters with seven new episodes premiering on April 25 at 10p. Viewers will follow extreme angler Jeremy Wade as he tackles freshwater monsters found in the Congo, Thailand, South Africa, Uganda, Ethiopia, Alaska and Florida. Icon Films produces the series for Animal Planet.

Syfy’s third season opener of Destination Truth Wednesday night at 10p, searching for the legendary leprechaun in Ireland, tallied 1.3 million A18-49; 1.4 million A25-54; and 2.2 million total viewers.

Comedy Central launched a 14th season of South Park on Wednesday at 10p, marking the series’ most-watched season premiere since 1999 with 3.7 million total viewers and posting a 2.4 rating among A18-49; a 5.2 rating with M18-34; and a 6.9 rating with M18-24. The series premiere of Ugly Americans following at 1030p, delivered a 1.3 rating among A18-49; 3.0 rating with M18-34; and a 4.1 rating with M18-24.

Chicago’s WGN-TV and CLTV will present a new weekly 30m food and lifestyle show titled Chicago’s Best, starting April 18 at 10p. The show will deploy a team, led by host Ted Brunson, who will discover all that is best in the Chicago region, from food to people, to places and things to do. The show will air Sundays at 10p on WGN-TV with weekly encores airing on CLTV Thursdays at 8p, Fridays at 1130a and 8p, and Saturdays and Sundays at 630a, 12p and 7p. Oak Brook Productions produces the series.

Fess Parker, 85, best-known for playing Davy Crockett in the Disney TV show Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, died Thursday of natural causes. Parker became a household name among kid TV viewers in the 1950s for playing the raccoon-skin cap wearing Crockett and for his other roles in such Disney movies as Old Yeller, The Great Locomotive Chase, Westward Ho the Wagons! and The Light in the Forest. Parker was named a Disney legend in 1991. Parker went on to star as another frontier hero in the TV series Daniel Boone which aired from 1964-1970. Later, he made appearances on a number of TV series including Dragnet, Death Valley Days, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and The Andy Williams Show among others. In more recent years, Parker did well away from television and the movies as he owned a successful winery and resort in the Santa Barbara, CA area.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

ITV Studios Global Entertainment was selected as the worldwide distributor for the factual reality series Pineapple Dance Studios. The series, with 13 one-hour episodes, is produced by Pulse Films and was commissioned by Sky 1 and Sky 1 HD in the UK. Pineapple Dance Studios take viewers inside the famous London dance studio and follows the lives of the teachers, students and staff.
 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS okayed a food-themed reality pilot that, if approved to series, would give the network its first cooking show. CBS is moving forward with Beat the Chefs from Relativity Real with Tom Forman (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) on board as executive producer. The show will have skilled amateur cooks making their classic family recipe as top chefs recreate the same dish. Judges will decide whose version is the best with a cash prize at stake.

In more CBS news, Skeet Ulrich was tapped to star in the untitled John Wells medical drama pilot. The plot is about a mobile medical team that travels the US helping those in need. Ulrich will play a top member of the team, a Harvard-grad who is still in love with his drug addict ex-wife. Previously for CBS, Ulrich starred in Jericho and the 2009 drama pilot Back.

High School Musical star, Ashley Tisdale was cast to co-star in The CW’s Hellcats, the network’s pilot about a competitive college cheerleading team. Tisdale will play Sierra, the Hellcats’ intense captain who is a roommate to Marti (Aly Michalka), another college girl who, after losing her scholarship, joins the Hellcats.

Jason Clarke will play the lead in Ride-Along, the cop drama pilot for FOX from Shawn Ryan, cites THR. Ride-Along, set and shot on location in Chicago centers on Detective Jarek Wysocki (Clarke) one of the city’s toughest cops who is bent on cleaning up Chicago’s violence and corruption.

Wednesday  A18-49 Analysis: FOX had the right formula Wednesday night, winning with 4.6/14 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX led at 8p with Human Target at 2.3/8 with UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe placing second with 1.8/6. FOX outshone the competition during 9p with American Idol at 6.8/20 and CBS claimed #2 with a rerun of Criminal Minds at 1.9/5. NBC capped off the night at #1 through 10p with Law & Order: SVU at 2.8/9 while CBS’ CSI: NY encore episode trailed next at 1.6/5.
