Giving a trio of Thursday night comedies a nod, NBC renewed The Office, Parks and Recreation and Community for the 2011-2012 season. NBC had already renewed 30 Rock last November. This season, The Office is averaging a 4.0/10 among A18-49 and 7.7 million total viewers; Parks and Recreation averaging a 2.8/7 A18-49 and 5.5 million viewers; and Community delivering a 2.1/6 among A18-49 and 4.7 million viewers.
Rolling out this summer, ABC is readying a new six-episode game show, 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show from Wipeout’s executive producer, Matt Kunitz. Contestants on the show will answer multiple choice questions trying to win a $50,000 cash prize, though when contestants are eliminated they face a funny ejection off the show such as being strapped to the wing of a biplane or shot out of a cannon. Jeff Sutphen will host.
Viewers experience on-the-job drama of police work directly through the officer’s eyes as truTV debuts new series Police POV April 17 at 10p. Using a new technology called Taser Axon, an on-officer camera system developed by TASER International the series provides viewers with up-close access to suspense, danger and action in every episode as police protect America’s cities. BASE Productions, Inc. produces the series.
Country music superstar Shania Twain opens up to viewers in the intimate new docu-series Why Not? with Shania Twain launching on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network May 8 at 11p airing after The Judds finale at 10p. The series will move to its regular time slot of Sundays at 10p starting May 15. Produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions, the docu-series journeys with Twain as she revisits and documents the places and events in her life that have caused her pain and hardship, despite becoming the best-selling female artist in country music history. Twain’s travels also take her to meet with other music industry giants who have experienced similar painful experiences as she has one-on-one conversations with Gladys Knight, Lionel Richie and David Foster as she attempts to reclaim her voice.
A twelfth season of The Style Network’s fashion intervention series, How Do I Look? premieres April 2 at 8p. Jeannie Mai, host and fashion guru is back for the new season with 20 all-new 60m episodes. The Style Network produces the series.
MTV’s music franchise, 120 Minutes rejoins the lineup on MTV2 as a monthly on-air show later this year and as a weekly online show, 120 Seconds starting today via MTV Hive, the new music play destination at www.mtvhive.com/120 . Matt Pinfield, the longtime VJ of 120 Minutes is also back as host of the new on-air show and the online version.
A lineup of celebrity artists will make special appearances throughout the new season of MTV’s Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew debuting April 7 at 10p. Special guests include Ke$ha, Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber with themed episodes inspired by Rihanna, Lil Wayne and others. Mario Lopez hosts the series shot on location in Los Angeles where ten dance crews compete for a $100,000 cash prize.
On a renewal roll, Syfy ordered a sophomore season of its drama series Being Human, a production from Muse Entertainment in association with Zodiak USA. Since it premiered on January 17, Being Human averaged 1.8 million viewers and has become Syfy’s best winter season scripted series premiere in six years.
TLC returns to Broward County this time featuring the top-tracking K-9 unit in the limited six-episode series, Unleashed: K-9 Broward County opening April 7 at 10p preceded by a new episode of Police Women of Broward County at 9p. Each half-hour episode of Unleashed follows Deputy Jerry Wengert, his partner Det. Geoff Brown and their well-trained third partner, a dog named Bali. The series from Thinkfactory Media debuts with back-to-back episodes on April 7 at 10p and April 14 at 10p then the final two episodes air on April 25 at 10p. TLC airs 13 new episodes of Police Women of Broward County on Thursdays at 9p from RelativityREAL, LLC.
New York’s public television station, WLIW21 will air a second one-hour report from NHK Japan called NHK World Special next Monday at 5a offering an update on the tragic events happening in Japan. The special English-language newscast will also air in Japan earlier on Monday.
Sportsman Channel picked up the web series, Hook, Line & Skillet premiering March 29 at 8p. The 13-week series will air on Tuesdays and is produced by Sinker Swim Productions, LLC.
Tuesday night’s Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump now ranks as the most-watched roast special ever among M18-24 as it delivered 3.5 million total viewers and a 5.50 rating with M18-24 as well as a 2.21 rating with A18-49.
2010 posted a 6.5% increase in total advertising expenditures and ended the year at $131.1 billion, cites Kantar Media in a new report released yesterday. Furthermore, ad spending rose by +7% in fourth quarter 2010 versus the previous year. Highlights of ad spending by measured media categories include: Network TV +5.3%; Cable TV +9.8%; Spot TV with a double-digit hike at +24.2%; Spanish Language TV +10.7%; and National Syndication taking a dip at -2.8%. Under the Radio Media category, Local Radio posted a +4.9% gain; National Spot Radio up by +18.6%; and Network Radio with a slight increase at +2.2%.
Veteran broadcaster, Pasquale “Pat” Servodidio died on March 15 after a long battle with lung cancer. Mr. Servodidio began his career in the mailroom of CBS and eventually rose to the position of President of RKO Television and Radio and later Multimedia Broadcasting. The family will receive friends at the Westchester Funeral Home Eastchester today 2-4 & 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday March 19th at Assumption Church at 10:30a. Best known as the dapper and calm butler Alfred Pennyworth in the Batman film franchise, Michael Gough died recently at the age of 94. The British actor was also known in his home country appearing in a number of television series including Doctor Who, as well as many British horror films including The Phantom of Opera (1962), The Corpse (1970) and Dracula (1985). In addition to working with Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher on the Batman films, he reunited with Tim Burton again in Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland. Mr. Gough is survived by his fourth wife, Henrietta.
MIPTV 2011:
Passion Distribution is bringing a second season of The Style Network’s series Too Fat For 15 which was just renewed with 17 one-hour episodes to MIPTV. The series is produced by Daisybeck Productions in association with Passion Distribution. UKTV also aired the first season of Too Fat For 15 on its entertainment channel, Watch and further acquired the second season.
Discovery Communications takes three new programs to MIPTV available for third-party distribution: Dancing King: Man in the Mirror with 6 eps/60m from Mighty Fine Productions; Animals Distract Me, a one-hour documentary produced by Double Wide Media; and Prophets of Science Fiction with 8 eps/60m from Scott Free.

Production began this week on USA Network’s series White Collar for its third season and the sophomore season of Covert Affairs. Both series will bow June 7 with White Collar from Fox Television Studios at 9p and Covert Affairs from Universal Cable Productions at 10p.
Jimmy Smits landed the main lead role in NBC’s untitled pilot from Stephen Gaghan (formerly titled S.I.L.A.). The plot is described as a complicated ensemble drama similar to Traffic and Syriana set in the world of crime, law enforcement and politics in modern-day Los Angeles. Smits will play L.A. Mayor Alfonso Morales. Noah Emmerich, Emma Dumont and Madchen Amick have already been cast.
Comedian Damon Wayans is set to star as Nick Herd in a multi-camera comedy pilot for CBS playing a sports radio host inspired by ESPN’s Colin Cowherd. Bill Martin and Mike Schiff are penning the pilot and will serve as executive producers along with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum. CBS Television Studios will produce.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: The competition was no match for FOX winning Wednesday night at 7.6/22 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s American Idol loomed large with a 7.0/22 and CBS’ Survivor: Redemption Island posted less than half as much at 3.2/10. American Idol on FOX surged at 9p to an 8.1/23 and CBS placed second again with Criminal Minds at 3.6/10. CBS then moved into first place at 10p as Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior delivered a 2.5/7 and Univision’s Triunfo del Amor was next at 1.8/5.

USA Network appointed Jeff Wachtel and Chris McCumber as Co-Presidents of the network to jointly manage strategic goals and operations for all platforms for USA. Jeff and Chris will both report directly to Bonnie Hammer, Chairman, NBC Universal Cable Entertainment and Cable Studios.
Effective immediately, three executives tapped by AETN for new positions: Robert Sharenow appointed EVP/Programming for Lifetime brands; David McKillop named EVP/Programming for A&E brands; and Dirk Hoogstra upped to SVP/Programming for the History brands. Robert and Dirk will report to Nancy Dubuc, President, Lifetime and History and David will now report to Bob DeBitetto, President, A&E Network and BIO Channel.
The Insider’s anchor Lara Spencer returns to ABC News and Good Morning America as a Lifestyle Anchor beginning in May. Spencer will present a broad range of stories for GMA on issues pertaining to family, parenting, health, fitness and work/life balance in addition to helping with entertainment and celebrity news. Based in New York, Spencer will further be a contributor for Nightline and report for every ABC News platform. Back in 1999, Spencer joined GMA as a national correspondent and moved to The Insider in 2003 as a co-anchor where she has spent the last seven years.
Mary Eileen Besachio and Ann Woodruff were both hired as Research Associates at Centris, joining the company’s marketing science staff. Mary joins after 11 years at Merck & Co while Ann spent 22 years at Nielsen.
Pulse added Daniel Glew as Head/Content Development, Harri Watson as Development AP and Lorraine Heggessey as a Consultant to counsel the company on creative and business development concentrating on broadcast. Daniel previously worked for Diverse Production and Harri came from Zodiak Media.
Betsy Rodgers advances to SVP/Legal and Business Affairs with Rainbow Media where she manages the Sundance Selects and IFC Entertainment companies and brands which encompasses Sundance Selects, IFC Films, IFC Midnight, the IFC Center based in New York City as well as SundanceNow.com. Betsy reports to Jamie Gallagher, General Counsel, Rainbow Media.
Ari Weiss soon joins the creative department at BBH New York as Executive Creative Director working on the Axe account. Ari will work with other Executive Creative Directors, Jon Pearce, Mike Shackle, Calle Sjoenell and Pelle Sjoenell. Prior to this appointment, Ari was with 180 Los Angeles as Creative Director on Sony and Boost Mobile accounts.
